Android :: Free Up Memory By Finishing An Activity After Calling Another?

Feb 25, 2010

Hopefully the title wasn't to confusing but what I meant was the following:

Lets say activity A starts activity B by calling:

Intent myIntent = new Intent(Activity_A.this, Activity_B.class);
Activity_A.this.startActivity(myIntent);

Could I save/free up some memory by finishing Activity_A after Activity_B is begun (if thats even possible). Maybe through the following:

Intent myIntent = new Intent(Activity_A.this, Activity_B.class);
Activity_A.this.startActivity(myIntent);
Activity_A.finish();

Or would Acitivty_A call startActivity() and wait for Activity_B to finish before it called finish()?

The idea would then be that when the users end with Activity_B, it would just restart Acitivity_A (and finish itself in a similar fashion)? Would this create too much overhead? Thanks for any answers and I apologize if the formatting of this post isn't correct.

HTC Droid Eris :: Hour X Hour Battery Usage (Manually Update)

Dec 12, 2009

I manually updated my Eris the other night and I must say I am happy with the update, it has really helped with my battery. What I have done is installed Battery Indicator by Darshan Computing. This puts a battery percentage indicator in the notifications area. I have set the built in timer for an hour and when it goes off I make a note of the battery in form of a percentage. Here is what I have so far.

Hour/Percentage of Battery Remaining
1/98
2/85
3/82
4/80
5/77
6-70

Android :: Remove An Activity From Navigation Stack (without Finishing)

Aug 10, 2010

Let's say you have a TabActivity with activities A1, A2, A3, and A4. When you click on the different tabs, no matter how many times you navigate between them, when you press the back key you leave the entire tab group, instead of navigating to a previous tab. My problem is, I am not using an actual TabActivity.

Does anyone know how to specify to Android that I'd like to mimic that behavior with a group of activities? The classic solution (that I know of) would to simply finish() the activity as you navigate away from it. That clears the stack, so that when you went from A1 and then to A2, and pressed back, you don't go back to A1.

The problem with using finish() is that I don't want the activity removed from memory. These activities load data from the network, so unless the data was cached, it would need to be reloaded on every navigation which would not be a great user experience.

I was looking at the flags which you can specify how to change this behavior: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/fundamentals.html#acttask I tried using these: intent.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_SINGLE_TOP); intent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK); intent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP); But no matter what, when I go from A1 to A2 and press back, I always get back to A1.

In trying to clear the navigation stack without using finish()?

Android :: Make Precise Handling Of Pan And Zoom Finishing?

Aug 25, 2010

I am trying to write an application that will dynamically load data to map while user pans or zooms it.
So I need to track when map finished to change its view state (stops panning or zooming) and then load a new portion of data for creating markers. But in fact Google Maps API doesn't have any events to handle this.
There are some methods like creating empty overlay to control onTouch events and so on, but map panning could last long after user finished his touch (cause GMaps use some kind of inertion to make pan smoother).
I've tried to subclass MapView but its draw() method is final thus cannot be overriden.

Any ideas how to make precise handling of pan and zoom finishing?

Android :: AlarmManager - How To Repeat An Alarm At Top Of Every Hour

Jun 27, 2010

I want for an event to fire every hour (at 5:00, 6:00, 7:00, etc...).
I tried with a persistent background service with a thread but it wasn't the right solution because of:

battery consumption
service termination, due to android memory management

So I'm trying with AlarmManager. It works if I set an alarm to fire in X seconds (using "set" method).
But how can I repeat an event (using "setRepeating" method) at the top of every hour, until the alarm is canceled?

Android : Battery - An Hour And 45 Minutes Of Actual Use Out

Jun 16, 2010

I've had my EVO for about a week now and i've been trying to figure out the most efficient way to get a good days worth of battery. Nothing I have done has worked so far, maybe I am missing something. I am only getting about an hour and 45 minutes of actual use out of the phone and its on standby for about 8 hours and needs to be charged. Is this normal? I dont think it is...I installed ATK to see if it would help kill apps that I dont need running, but it didnt seem to change much even on aggressive kill setting. I did have it set to kill whenever the screen turned off, but i just changed it to every half hour. would i benefit from rooting to get rid of Sense UI?

Android :: Cell Towers & 6 Hour Battery Life?

Sep 18, 2010

Got a really strange problem. I am in Vietnam using MobiFone service. About 3 months ago something changed overnight and my battery went from 20 hours to just a 6 hour battey life. After a week I did a factory reset but the same. Took it to HTC in Saigon to be tested but they said no problem YET when I was there battery lasted longer. The problem was in only in Can Tho where I live UP to this month when the problem is now in Long Xuyen. I travel, to Cambodia a lot and usally when I leave Can Tho Battery life is better. I am now in Cambodia and battery life is 40 hours on a CamShin SIM. For a test in Can Tho I went to a phone shop and used a Vinaphone SIM for an hour and got a 40 hour life. This is a joke! Is there any application that can control the Radio or at least tell me what's going on? I tried a few but they do not say anything different between Vietnam or Cambodia. MobiFone did something but refuse to tell me anything. Back of my G1 with 1.6 is cool now but in Vietnam back of phone is very warm. Tried to reflash the Radio but phone will not let me. I rooted but still it will not let me. think I must load a new recovery program.

Android :: Audio Book Came In Half Hour Segments

Nov 15, 2010

I just got an EVO and love it. I got an app called 'Audio books' by Traveling Classics. It has thousands of free classic audio books. It works fine, but there's something I don't like- the books come in 30-minute segments. Every half-hour the reader stops reading and gives the company name and some legal info. Are there any audio book apps that don't do this, that read straight through a book without breaks? I want one that has thousands of classic audio books and remembers where I left off in a book. The one I got is free, but I'll be happy to pay for an app that doesn't have those 30-minute breaks.
