Android :: Example To Draw A Picture In Droid?
Jul 8, 2010
I want to draw a picture (bmp,jpg,png) into the canvas (using the onDraw() method) of a class that extends the View class. I would like to be able to draw parts of the picture, not the whole at once.

In my android application I use this method in "draw" Overlay class for draw route on map. Can someone tell me if this method is good (in terms of performance) for route draw on map or I must to put code in Thread ??
I'm new to android.
public synchronized void draw(Canvas canvas, MapView mapView, boolean shadow) {
if (pointsAndTimes.isEmpty()) {
return;
}
Projection projection = mapView.getProjection();
Paint paint = new Paint();
paint.setARGB(250, 255, 0, 0);.............

I use the backgrounds app, and it lets me save backgrounds to my SD card. I go into Astro/ sdcard/ backgrounds and then click on the picture. It gives me 2 options to open it. "ASTRO Image Viewer" and "View picture". For me to use it as a background I have to pull it up in "View picture", BUT....no matter how many times I try and pull it up that way, it shows me the first picture in my camera album. If I click "ASTRO Image Viewer", I can always see the picture I selected, but under menu, I only have the option to "share" and nothing else. Can you tell me why the selected picture won't show up in "View picture"?

I currently have a game written using the Android canvas. It is completely 2D, and I draw bitmaps as sprites on the canvas, and it technically works, but I have a few features that I need to add that will require drawing many more bitmaps on the screen, and there will be a lot more movement.
The app needs more power.
What is the best way to go from this method of drawing Bitmaps on a canvas to using OpenGL so I can draw them faster?

Is there a way to draw a circular gradient mask on a bitmap in Android? Trying to produce something similar to a foggy window. Click the window and a transparent circle shows up revealing whats behind the window. Prefferably using a gradient so the center of the circle is completely transparent and the further out from the center the less transparent. Is this possible?

I posted this question sort of embedded in the "show us your Droid X screen" but I think it got buried with all the "what is that widget?" questions.I see on some screens the picture widget picture is big. Mine is only about 1 inch by 1/2 inch.I can barely even get 1/2 a face in the picture.How do you get a bigger picture?I'm running LauncherPro, is that effecting it?Since I couldn't get a bigger picture, I decided to try and add the slide show widget. But when I try, it says Widget Conflict only one photo slideshow per home screen. I don't have any other slideshow widgets on my screen. Any ideas?

I tried using 2 elements within my but that didnt work either. Is there a way to either draw a shape within a shape or draw 2 lines around my shape (which has rounded corners btw).

I'm running into an issue with my program when trying to crop an image selected by the user from their gallery. The issue so far only appears when running on a Droid X, as running on the original moto Droid works fine.
Basically the issue occurs as the cropping intent is being run. Once the user crops the photo and clicks the save button, it replaces the wallpaper on the main screen with the cropped image that was saved! It does not do this on the moto droid, or emulators. Below is the code for cropping and saving the picture to the SD card:

I'm trying to figure out how to draw on a bitmap in android, and keep a copy of these changed bitmaps for an undo function.
Bitmap b = ...
Paint p = new Paint();
canvas.drawBitmap(b, new Matrix(), null);
canvas.drawCircle(0,0,20,20);
//does Bitmap b have the circle drawn on it next time?
Or how do I get the bitmap after its been drawn on with the canvas(I want to preserve a stack of bitmaps with the changes applied by canvas drawing)? Maybe I'm going about this entirely wrong.

I'm investigating the possiblity of writing an app for Android/iOS4/both that would use GPS in the background. I found the "Receiving Location Events in the Background" section of the iphone developer documentation, which recommends that I only register for "significant location change" events. I'm not aware of any such capability in the Android SDK, but it still seems like a good idea to do it this way if I can (so as not to drain the battery). My question is this: has anyone done any sort of benchmarking for this on and iPhone/Android phone? So far, I've seen a lot posts/documentation saying that listening for GPS events in the background is a VERY BAD THING and I should AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS, but I haven't been able to find any numbers for just how much power a background application listening on GPS changes would drain (i.e. % battery drain per time app is running in the background).
This information might be helpful for me (and possibly others too) because I might be able to poll less frequently or even register/unregister my GPS listener based on power drain. Essentially, I could try to put a ceiling on how much battery life my app could drain while in the background.

I'm making an App that needs to be able to draw new graphics on top of the last set.
This is my current onDraw() method -
protected void onDraw(Canvas canvas) {
canvas.drawColor(Color.WHITE);
if(points.size() > 0) {
//do some stuff here - this is all working ok
canvas.drawLine(p1.x, p1.y, p2.x, p2.y, linePaint);
}
}
Basically, I need to draw the new graphics as a layer on top of the last, so what I'm looking for is a way to carry the image of the last canvas to the current. I have tried to figure it out myself using the canvas.setBitmap() method but it acts very funny.

I studied the Androidreference for hours now, but don't really get the clue how to draw something (Text, Bitmap, Path ....) on a ImageView.
Should I extend View and use the onDraw()-Method? If yes, how can I draw on my ImageView?
Or is there any other way to achieve my goal?
