Android :: Including Custom Component / View No Longer Shows Up

Oct 29, 2009

The app I'm working on has 4 tabs, 3 of which share many features, including a navigation bar a the bottom with Back, Edit, and Map buttons. There is exactly the same xml in all 3 layouts, so I'm trying to DRY this out by extracting that xml into a separate component, including it, and then going from there. Previously I had:

<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_width="fill_parent">
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="@+id/showedit_toolbar" style="@style/showItemToolbar">
<ImageButton android:id="@+id/show_person_back_button"
style="@style/blackToolbarButton"
android:src="@drawable/left_white_arrow"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"/>
<Button android:id="@+id/show_person_map_button"
style="@style/blackToolbarButton"
android:text="map" android:layout_alignParentRight="true"/>
<Button android:id="@+id/show_person_edit_button"
style="@style/blackToolbarButton"
android:text="edit" android:layout_toLeftOf="@id/show_person_map_button"/>
</RelativeLayout>
<ScrollView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_above="@id/showedit_toolbar"
style="@style/CoinLightTheme">
// Lots more layout omitted

I extracted out the bit that's repeated into an xml file called show_toolbar.xml, changing the names of variables to make it more generic across the 3 views
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="@+id/show_toolbar" style="@style/showItemToolbar">
<ImageButton style="@style/blackToolbarButton"
android:src="@drawable/left_white_arrow"
android:layout_alignParentLeft="true"
android:id="@+id/show_back_button"/>
<Button android:id="@+id/show_map_button"
style="@style/blackToolbarButton"
android:text="map" android:layout_alignParentRight="true"/>
<Button android:id="@+id/show_edit_button" style="@style/blackToolbarButton"
android:text="edit" android:layout_toLeftOf="@id/show_map_button"/>
</RelativeLayout>

Then from within my original layout file, I replaced that big block of code with
<RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="fill_parent">
<include android:id="@+id/show_toolbar" layout="@layout/show_toolbar"/>
<ScrollView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_above="@id/showedit_toolbar" style="@style/CoinLightTheme">

Now, the problem is that the view no longer shows up. Including Custom component causes it to be hidden behind main viewI can still click the buttons and they respond (i.e. if I click in the corner where the button should be, it still works), but I cannot see the buttons or bar onto which they were drawn. I cannot find very good documentation on how Include is supposed to work, so perhaps I am using it incorrectly.

Android :: Find View Returns Null For Custom Component In Layout

Nov 7, 2009

I have a res/layout/main.xml including these elements and others:

<some.package.MyCustomView android:id="@+id/foo" (some other params) />
<TextView android:id="@+id/boring" (some other params) />
In my Activity's onCreate, I do this:
setContentView(R.layout.main);
(TextView) boring = findViewById(R.id.boring);
// ...find other elements...
MyCustomView foo = (MyCustomView) findViewById(R.id.foo);
if (foo == null) { Log.d(TAG, "epic fail"); }

The other elements are found successfully, but foo comes back null. MyCustomView has a constructor MyCustomView(Context c, AttributeSet a) and a Log.d(...) at the end of that constructor appears successfully in logcat just before the "epic fail".
findViewById() returns null for custom component in layout XML, not for other components. Why is foo null?

Here the problem i am facing is how to capture particular tableRow on onclick() even and how do I get all the textviews of that particular Row. I tried to set id at runtime, and tried to get id of view, but it's not working, giving error resourcenotfoundexception.

Android :: Adding Table Row By Inflating Does Not Take Table's Settings

Nov 4, 2010

I have a table layout with a few predefined rows in it. Each row has only two columns.

Now I need to dynamically add additional rows in it.

I have two problems:

1) When programmatically inflating, I cannot set the index of the newly created row (I want it in place 'n') 2) After inflation, the inserted (actually appended) row doesn't listen to parent table's stretch column property.

So here are my questions:

q1) Can I set the place where to insert the inflated row programatically ?

q2) Why doesn't the new row inflate properly (the second column is not shown because the first column doesn't contains a TextView with fill_parent.

In the end I need the first column to occupy 80% of the screen width, and the second column remaining 20%.

q3) is that doable with programmatic row insertions ?

Android :: Scroll To Last Line Of Table Layout Within Scroll View

Jun 21, 2010

I want to have a dynamic table, with rows added over time as a result of user interaction, using a TableLayout inside a ScrollView. This works fine, but when I want to scroll to the end of the table using fullScroll(), it always leaves out the last line; that is, it scrolls so that the one before the last one is visible. The last line is visible when scrolling manually, and the scrollbar is correct too.I'm of course open to suggestions as to how to make a better layout out of this; but I'm specifically interested in understanding why fullScroll() behaves that way. Should I give it a different parameter, or use something else altogether? Or does it do that because the newly added line isn't yet visible somehow? (if so, how can I solve that?) Or did I miss some other obvious thing?The following code replicates the problem: TestActivity.java:
package com.example.android.tests;
import java.util.Random;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.View;
import android.widget.Button;
import android.widget.ScrollView;
import android.widget.TableLayout;
import android.widget.TableRow;
import android.widget.TextView;
public class TestActivity extends Activity {
@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
((Button) findViewById(R.id.AddRow)).setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View v) {
Random rnd = new Random();
TableRow nr = new TableRow(v.getContext());
for (int c=0; c<3; c++) {
TextView nv = new TextView(v.getContext());
nv.setText(Integer.toString(rnd.nextInt(20)-10));
nr.addView(nv);
}((TableLayout) findViewById(R.id.Table)).addView(nr);
// Scrolls to line before last - why?
((ScrollView) findViewById(R.id.TableScroller)).fullScroll(View.FOCUS_DOWN);
}main.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<Button
android:text="Add Row"
android:id="@+id/AddRow"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:layout_alignParentBottom="true" />
<ScrollView
android:id="@+id/TableScroller"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_above="@id/AddRow"
android:layout_alignParentTop="true" >
<TableLayout
android:id="@+id/Table"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:stretchColumns="0,1,2" />
</ScrollView>
</RelativeLayout>
Edit: for reference, I implemented Romain Guy's solution as follows:In TestActivity.java, replace:
// Scrolls to line before last - why?
((ScrollView) findViewById(R.id.TableScroller)).fullScroll(View.FOCUS_DOWN);
// Enqueue the scrolling to happen after the new row has been layout
((ScrollView) findViewById(R.id.TableScroller)).post(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
((ScrollView) findViewById(R.id.TableScroller)).fullScroll(View.FOCUS_DOWN);

Android :: Iphone Web App Server Side View Template Selection

My model and controller will be the same, the domain will be the same, but the html will be served differently for mobile users.Has anyone tried this? Any pitfalls to this approach?

Android :: Droid Layout : Is Reusable Component UI Possible?

I'll preface this with, I've just started learning Android so be gentle.
I come from an ASP.NET / Silverlight background so I was looking for something along the lines of controls.

I want to reuse a layout (a ListView item template) in other layouts.

Such that in my other layouts I can just add <myListItem /> to show it.

Is this, or anything like it possible? or are there better ways?

Android :: Convert EditText Component From A Text Field To Numeric In Droid?

Oct 1, 2009

If I have an EditText component on my screen that I have specified inputType="decimal" for (i.e. a numeric/decimal field), what is the best way to convert it to an decimal value in the application code?

Google recommends avoiding floats, and avoiding creating objects unnecessarily (and I assume any auto-unboxing code is bad too), so I take these as my constraints. I realize a small application probably doesn't need to worry too much, but I haven't been able to find a 'best-practice' solution to this.

The most common solution appears to be this:

double value = Double.parseDouble(txtInput);
