Android :: Convert EditText Component From A Text Field To Numeric In Droid?

If I have an EditText component on my screen that I have specified inputType="decimal" for (i.e. a numeric/decimal field), what is the best way to convert it to an decimal value in the application code?
Google recommends avoiding floats, and avoiding creating objects unnecessarily (and I assume any auto-unboxing code is bad too), so I take these as my constraints. I realize a small application probably doesn't need to worry too much, but I haven't been able to find a 'best-practice' solution to this.
The most common solution appears to be this:
double value = Double.parseDouble(txtInput);

I am trying to filter a ListView when typing text into an EditText field. With the onTextChanged() method I have now, the app crashes when trying to type in the EditText field.

I have a simple EditText field in one of my Activities. If I set the field to disabled, it greys out and I cannot enter text with the hardware keyboard, however when I touch the field the virtual keyboard appears and that still lets me enter text. Is this a bug? Any workarounds for making sure this can't happen?

I'm trying to take the user input, which may or may not have a comma in it, and put a comma in the correct places upon the user deselecting the field (or at all, if that's not possible).
I would also like to know how I can subtract the commas to make the number just an integer.

I've been doing some usability testing on a website I'm developing, using an Android phone and an iPod touch. In both cases, when entering a numeric field (time, distance in metres, etc) I have to take a manual step to change the keyboard layout to show digits. As the app will only accept numeric values in the text box, I'd like to save the user the inconvenience and tell the device "switch to the number pad for this input".

I have an EditText field and a button. My aim is to let user enter text info to the EditText or click the button to launch a dialog to select some checkbox and radio button which it will perform some computation and return a value to display at the EditText field.
I can't seems to get the value to display at the EditText field after the dialog dismiss. I did try a toast to display the value and it is ok. I *think* the view was not refresh to display the text in the EditText field.

Why is the textSize attribute ignored in EditText-fields? How can I make the text in those fields smaller, so that ALL cells have the same font size? Why does Android not honor that attribute, even if explicitly set?

I am trying to add a "EditText" Field to an AppWidget. I took the AppWidget example from here: http://developer.android.com/guide/samples/ApiDemos/src/com/example/andr oid/apis/appwidget/index.html and modified it by replacing the TextView with a EditText. It doesnt work... Compiles and runs but the Widget sais "Problem loading Widget" when it shows up.
Maybe an example? Is the default Google Search Widget open source? Can someone give ma a link to the source?

I have a setup view where the user can enter their name and email and click done when they are finished which navigates them to another activity1. When they are in activity1, and they hit the soft back button on the phone, it takes them screen where they entered their name and email. However, the name and email EditText fields are blank. In the view where the name and email are entered I looked to see if onStart, onCreate, OnPause, onResume,... where being called after the back button was hit, but they are not. Do you know how I can make it so that the EditText fields have the information that was previously entered.

I am trying to populate the text of a second EditText widget with the text from the first EditText widget only when the second EditText widget receives focus, the second widget is not empty, and the first widget is not empty. When I run it and click into the second widget it does not populate. When I remove the third constraint ('etxt.getText ().toString().trim() == ""')) it works. so getText() on the second EditText widget is returning something even though the second widget has no initial value other then the text that is displayed via the hint attribute.

I have an app I am working on that does some math on a few variables and outputs the answer. Well that's the plan anyway. Being a total n00b at Android & Java I am not sure of a couple of things.1) I have created text fields in the layout file for user to enter values. I have a gallery widget and in that i had a view with linear layout which has a edit text inside. When it launches on device the edittext box shows but has no text visible.
However when i scroll to next view in gallery it shows text and when it comes to focus and centered the text disappears.
If i replace gallery with grid or a horizontal view I can see the text on edit text.
Can you please advise what I might be doing wrong here. Why the text disappears.

Is it possible to use AdapterView with text fields in android?
My query returns a set of values and for each I want to place that within a textfield, so that the user may edit the value.
Also, I want to click a button to create a new empty field, so that I may insert a new entry.
If you know of good example, then please let me know!
I would prefer to use XML to define ui and I found this informations:
"In this case we create a new id called text1. The + after the @ in the id string indicates that the id should be automatically created as a resource if it does not already exist, so we are defining text1 on the fly and then using it." Will this + allow me to autocreate as many fields as needed? Is there a way I can generically specify the layout in XML and then create fields adhoc based on db response?
