Android :: Droid Emulator Hang Up And Impossible To Quit / Fix It?
Jul 2, 2010
I've installed the Android plugin on Eclipse 3.6 in a regular way (aka i followed step by step the google installation page).
When i launch any sample application, everything work fine, but if i try to quit the emulator (by clicking the exit cross button of the emulator), the emulator seems to hang completly.
What is very bothering is that i can't even kill the process, launch another emulator or even reboot my pc! (since the process seems to be impossible to stop or kill).
Anyone have similar problem, and a solution to give?

This has happened to me several times in slightly different cases. Several times I've mistakenly placed calls to the wrong people (due to just messing around with the phone).
In a panic, I pressed the "back" button thinking that it will cancel the call. It didn't. I also tried the "home" button. Also no good.
I had to drag down the notifications bar to see the phone call in progress and finally access the red Hang Up button. That worked. The problem is that is is SLOW. And worse, one time the phone would not respond to the button press until after several tries (maybe the CPU was busy on something).
Anycase, that would appear to be a major problem with all these touchscreen-only smartphones - lack of a physical Hangup button.
Is there any workarounds to this? Perhaps some sequence or combo of the existing physical buttons to forcefully hangup an errant call?

I'm speaking as a formal HTC user, Had the HTC Eris for over 6 months, before that, the palm Pre.... and being around my mother with her HTC Hero (cdma) her phone ringing all day long it was impossible to ignore that thing, dang loud and clear.
My previous phones both had VERY loud and rich speakers on them (the speaker the ringer/music/sound affects come out of), even in some noisy environments it was impossible to miss a call when I had service, just the week that I've had the droid X, I've missed several calls either from not noticing the vibrator in looser pockets or its just too dang quiet.
Speaker placement is bad too, sitting the phone on a slighty soft surface like a chair can muffle the speaker to nearly impossible to hear 6 feet away.
I'm hoping the droid X doesnt have a hardware deficiency and that this can be fixed through software... My best buddy has the droid x also, his is just the same, very quiet vs my old Eris put side to side.

My GPS quit working yesterday in Ruidoso, NM. Was working great all weekend, even in the mountains. Yesterday morning, it refused to find my location. Rebooted several times (didn't remove battery-should have) but it never kicked in. Turned GPS off, but kept turning it on periodically just to check it on the drive back to Austin. When we got home, I checked it one more time and it was working? I'm very glad it's working, but just wonder why it stopped? I really missed it!

When my phone is plugged in my cursor jumps to the left making it impossible to type or access applications that are not on the menu screen all the way to the left. It also navigates itself away from web pages and I think the constant left motion of the cursor makes the phone run slowly. I cant look at maps either.

Sometimes after I am done with a call the screen is black and I click on the screen to get it to light up so I can end the call with no results. I than push the little top button to turn on the phone by than the call has confused the voicemail I am leaving and I have to redo the message. I am leaving or push 1 or 2 go through all of that. Anyone else with the black screen and having to "unlock" the device issues? I want to never push that button on the top unless I lock it.

I get a text, pull my phone out of the belt holster.....and read it in normal orientation. With the phone unlocked, I read the text(s) and decide to respond. About 75% of the time, it either takes 5-10 seconds to change orientation when I go to horizontal mode......or it won't even switch at all. It gets so frustrating I feel like throwing the phone.
Fwiw, a quick slide to expose the hardware keyboard will quickly change to horizontal orientation, but sliding it closed brings it back to default orientation, and doesn't seem to affect the speed of orienting back to horizontal.

So my Droid X hung just now. Is there a reset button somewhere or do I just do the old school approach and take the battery out?

When on a phone call outdoors and I want to hang up, I pull the phone away from my face and the display stays black. The proximity sensor is not sensing that I've moved it away from my face. I can't hang up the call. If I hold the phone above my head with the display facing toward the ground the display comes right back.
It works perfectly indoors. I've compared this to another phone and the other worked perfectly. I've read that the UV rays from the sun can interfere with the proximity sensor. Verizon does not recognize this as a problem but if you Google it you will see this problem goes way back.

It seems to REALLY "hang up" sometimes. Like I try touching to type in text, and it will take FOREVER sometimes to pull up the virtual keyboard. And multiple touches at times. Other than that, it's force closing my apps a LOT. iMusic, Messaging, Facebook... all force close regular. Tried removing apps, no change.

I did a factory reset on my Eris and went through the setup process. Phone rebooted after being programmed(*228).Got in and started playing around. Downloaded updates for Google Maps and Facebook. I shut my phone off,and now it just hangs at the boot screen. I have tried booting up in recovery mode. All I get is a picture of the eris with a red triangle. Is there anything else I can try before I take it back to Verizon?

For example, I am inside a building and I want to get my location with the accuracy of 0.75 (Criteria.ACCURACY_FINE) and this will use the gps if my gps is on. Since I am inside a building, gps won't work. How can I determine if it is really impossible to get a gps fix location?
Is onLocationChanged(Location arg0) will be called even though no gps fix location was received when using LocationListener? Is it possible to use a timeout in requesting gps location so that I can shift to network as the location provider if i can't get any location?

I have build a sort of split view for one of my android applications. I have made an activity which is a container of a listview and a framelayout. I use the listview for a menu and in my framelayout, I load views of different activities. I have read the source code of the TabHost for building this system.
Activities that I load in my framelayout could contain a webview.
The system work pretty well but I have a big issue. When I click on a field in a webview, the soft keyboard doesn't appear and typing on the physical keyboard has no affect.
I have made many many researches and I found nothing.

Yesterday I post this : http://groups.google.fr/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread...
but today this problem is not resolved and I think that the problem is an issue between TanHost component and Animationdrawable.
I tried a lot of thing, but the start() method makes nothing. The first drawable is displayed and that's all.
I would like to know if somebody can do a test to confirm it, I'll post a bug just after.

The title says it all.
I'm using the latest version.
I've been using the back button to back out of the program, but I've just learned that the program stays active (still in memory).
Surely there has to be a way to quit the program?

I just used some great app and now I'm done, and... I want to *exit* the app. So I look for the 'exit' button.'quit' button.. nope can't find it.. !? Is there really no 'quit' button for android apps? (like in all other operating systems: the X button at the top right corner of the window) Shurely this can't be true. Only way to quit is to go to the home menu and start up a 2nd application dedicated to killing other apps and then kill app nr 1 from that?? Like buying a car that only has an 'on' switch and when i arrive at my destination, I have to open the hood and disconnect a gas lead or sometning to stop the engine.. (Or press the back button 10 times go through all documents you viewed until you reach the home screen). Isn't this like one of the basic features an OS should provide in its user interface?

I have been developing a game on Android and wrote a wrapper for J2ME classes,
When notifyDestroyed() is called in my ME program and calling finish() but the application doesn't close correctly.
The App goes to background and when launched again it shows an error message and presents an option to "force close" the App, if i force close it and launch again, the app launches fine but again the same has to be repeated upon every launch..
Can you please explain why the App is not being erased from memory when finish() is called.
when i check the log i found no exceptions when closing but when launched again it throws a null pointer exception.
for now to work around I placed "System.exit(0)" after calling finish () so that the app is exited abruptly, but am waiting for a valid answer on whats going on behind...?

I'm trying to parse many string dates to Date(s), some with time part, others without, with the "dd/MM/yyyy HH:mm" format.
CODE:..............
(here, format is always "dd/MM/yyyy HH:mm").
But this causes an exception, even with setLenient forced at true. Do you know how I may convert to Date a lot of strings formatted like "dd/MM/yyyy HH:mm:ss", but with someones without time, some others without secondes, and still other one with everything ?

My app (first written for Android 1.6) reads groups and contacts but I have so far only been able to write code for 2.0 that compiles but I have never executed. Since the Contacts API and particularly the way groups work has changed substantially in ways that I haven't quite been able to find out I need to try it on a phone to see how it now works. So is there any way at all I can test contact groups in the emulator? I have looked all over for help on this and all I have been able to glean is that I cannot get groups into the emulator unless I create them in a Google (or other, Exchange?) account then sync with it. However I cannot seem to sync/open an account from my emulator - and this I have read may be impossible as you can only do it from a phone with a valid IMEI.

I am planning to release a trial version of my app and am looking into best ways to implement the logic. My lite version of the app would have all the features but will be time restricted. I see a couple of issues:
- Currently there is no mechanism built into android that allows an app to be closed. I see that you can close the main acitivity, but the user can always press the back button and go back into the app.
- After trial period, the user can always un-install the app and re- install it. What do I do to prevent this from happening?

Hi everyone, so I installed the ADW.launcher homescreen replacement app and love it. The only problem is that I have to force quit my default homescreen (in this case it's called "LG Homescreen")--task-killers won't work and I have to go into the application settings to force it. Fine. But every time I reboot my phone it runs along side of adw and I want only adw when the phone boots. I already set adw as my default homscreen, no change.
