Android :: Does Intent Use Googles Cloud At All
Apr 23, 2010
Sorry I'm new to Android handsets. When you do a startActivity(intent) does it involve hitting Googles cloud services at all to resolve the [handler] or is this purely a local call?

Below are the only instructions i managed to find from google on how to install the android NDK, it is written as if we all run Linux and presumes we all understand what these obscure tools are. My comments and questions appear in Italics if somone who knows unix and windows would translate for google that would be great!
Android NDK Installation
Introduction:
Please read docs/OVERVIEW.TXT to understand what the Android NDK is and is not. This file gives instructions on how to properly setup your NDK.
I. Requirements:
The Android NDK currently requires a Linux, OS X or Windows host operating system. Windows users will need to install Cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com) to use it. Note that running the NDK under MSys is not supported.
You will need to have the Android SDK and its dependencies installed. The NDK cannot generate final application packages (.apk files), only the shared library files that can go into them.
IMPORTANT:
The Android NDK can only be used to target system images using the Cupcake (1.5) or later releases of the platform. This is due to subtle toolchain and ABI related changed that make it incompatible with 1.0 and 1.1 system images.
The NDK requires GNU Make 3.81 or later being available on your development system. Earlier versions of GNU Make might work but have not been tested.
You can check this by running 'make -v' from the command-line. The output should look like:
GNU Make 3.81 Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
...
On certain systems, GNU Make might be available through a different command like 'gmake' or 'gnumake'. For these systems, replace 'make' by the appropriate command when invoking the NDK build system as described in the documentation.
Great some strange thing called gnu make.. if your not going to tell me what it does maybe you then at least you could give me a URL to it?
The NDK also requires a Nawk or GNU Awk executable being available on your development system. Note that the original 'awk' program doesn't implement the 'match' and 'substr' functions used by the NDK build system.
Ok another tool, with 1 of 2 possible names, but not the third... and again where should i download this?
On Windows, you will need to install a recent release of Cygwin to use the NDK.
See http://www.cygwin.com for instructions.
Woohoo a URL! download took about a day because these install instructions do not specify what parts to download.
II. Preparing your installation prebuilt cross-toolchain binaries:
After installing and unarchiving the NDK, you will need to run the following
command from the root folder:
build/host-setup.sh
hello? windows dont run nothing but .exe .com or .dll, just tell me how you want me to run it..
This will test your setup and make sure the NDK can work properly.
Nothing is said about where any of these things need to be installed to (what directory)

I'm the proud new owner of a Motorola Droid, coming from a Treo 650. There are quite a few cloud-based storage services out there now (Google Docs, DropBox, etc.), but none seem to have clients for the Android phones. I searched the market, and I did find a few 3rd party apps for things like DropBox, but most had mediocre reviews. Anyone use a desktop app/android app/service combination they are happy with and care to recommend?

Need some insight on this folks. I want to keep private email truly private, and don't want the emails to go through google servers and/or be on the cloud. Is this possible? Is it more secure just to visit web based email via the internet on android smartphones, and login and view emails?

Cloud browser on the iPhone is amazing, you can run any game on the browser basically whether it's flash, java, shock... It would be amazing if we could get it for Android. Who agrees?

Recently installed Talk To Me Cloud, the translation app. Is pretty cool to press a button, talk into it and get a translation. There seems to be a little speaker icon next to the translation results, and when I press it I would expect to hear it say the translated sentence back to me, but it doesn't. Nothing happens. Press slightly to the left on if on the text itself and I'm told it's copied the text to the clipboard, but pressing on the little speaker icon does nothing. I have text to speech installed on my phone, which works in other apps (well, it worked in Sportypal anyway), so anyone know if there is a way of making this work? Should it work?

I have got a new moto milestone and am in the process of migrating from my trusty blackberry 8800. I just need to migrate the contact list from my bb to the moto. Is google sync enought for it? I have synced all my calendar and contacts to the google cloud. Will android pull up everything when i put my sim and activate it? The usual method of exporting everything to outlook seems so cumbersome.

Is this just the nature of Android, that contacts have to be sync'ed back to some Internet server? Or even that you must have an email address to even use the damn thing?
I have a Motorola Backflip. Android seems cool because of the customization capabilities, but I don't know where my data is. Is there any Android phone that keeps contacts local & doesn't "phone home"?
Of the 2GB dataplan that AT&T automatically added once I plugged my SIM card in, I've only racked up 50MB of data for the whole billing period (which ends in a couple days). I like Android but don't need 3G or Internet.

I'm pretty disappointed that android has been around this long without an app that syncs photos. I'm looking for something automated and preferably over the air into a cloud storage. I'm coming from Windows Mobile where Microsoft's My Phone app did all this.

I can't seem to sync some contacts that i've added on my galaxy to google contacts. i count at least 3 off the top of my head that i've added some time ago - one with only a name + number, one with those + pic, one with those + email. i just logged in to gmail on a computer and was about to send a mail to the last one mentioned, but couldn't find the contact. i tried to sync manually from the phone (by disabling/enabling contacts auto sync), and it did sync and changed the timestamp for "last synced", but none of those contacts appeared in my google contacts.

Is there any easy (preferably free) way that I can backup/sync my DCIM (pictures) to the "cloud"?
I probably don't need something that does it automatically. I think doing it on-demand when I want to would be fine.
I almost never need to connect my phone to the PC anymore, so I'd really love a way to safely backup the pictures without having to do so.

I know Dropbox is basically the dominant force in the cloud market but still there are some other competitors.
The closest competitor would be SugarSync but I really hate their interface and I think their service is slow and terrible.
I was able to find a list of some good cloud apps here but I was wondering if there was one that I haven't heard about:

This is off topic (off Android really), but does anyone know where to find good advice on moving to a "paperless office" using cloud software.I want to keep all my stuff online using a scanner and cloud based software. I'm posting here because many on this forum are software junkies and would at least know a few forums to direct me to.Actually, to bring it back to Android, I will be using my smart-phone to access the cloud to see my docs, which is a big reason I want to move to the "cloud."Here is my main question: What is the best cloud-based tool to store electronic documents? Google Docs, Evernote, or DropBox?

Not possible with Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4. The only way is to use Titanium Backup, and better than that, Nandroid Backup. You can as well extract data from a Nandroid backup with Titanium Backup.
I have a Nexus S and I wonder if, with the option Settings -> Accounts and sync -> Background data & Auto-sync & Manage accounts (sync is on) the settings and savegames are automatically stored "on the cloud", let it be my Google account or similar, because I don't have a rooted phone and don't want to do that to preserve warranty.
So, the apps for wich I want to save data are:
Air Penguin
Angry Birds
Angry Birds Rio
Angry Birds Seasons
ArmySniper
Clouds & Sheep
Dolphin Browser HD
eBay
EGGGZ
Flight Director
Jewellust
Jewellust Xmas
Labyrinth
MultiGrain
X Construct

I am a life long (so far but not for long!) WinMo user because up until now (2.2 release of Froyo) I have always assumed Android wasn't as elegant, capable, and smooth as Windows (YES, I WAS WRONG).So now that I'm ready to make the switch... does Android offer any service, through my Google log-in perhaps, to back up all my contacts to the cloud (with pictures and files as well, or is the data limited) I am with Verizon and have had this sluggish Touch Pro 2 for far too long, and have an annual upgrade I'm either going to put to use on with the Droid 2, or the X!
