Android - Developing Loading Bar After Confirm Dialog Click

I am developing a utility and facing an issue. The following describes what i intend to achieve: User will click on "Submit"Button. User will be prompted a confirm dialog box. On "No" , it will return. "Yes" click will take it to a method which does some processing. As processing can take sometime, i want to show loading bar after user clicks "Yes" in confirm dialog box. However, When i click "Yes"; the dialog box remains there and i can't see th progress bar.

I've been trying to show a "Do you want to exit?", type dialog when user attempts to exit an activity. However can't find the appropriate API hooks. Activity.onUserLeaveHint() initially looked promising, but I can't find a way to stop the activity finishing.

I have an activity which starts with a progress bar and I do not want the progress bar to go away until the processing is done, I have set the dialog to be setCancelable(false) so now user cannot cancel it with back but there are several other situations which hides the dialog for eg pressing 'search'.On clicking of 'search' button the search box and keyboard pops up,back button hides it and shows my activity which is always in the background but the dialog is gone.I can disable the search button but ideally I would want dialog to come back when the activity comes in foreground again. Any ideas how to do it?

I am writing an app that requires the user's current location (lastknownlocation won't be very helpful) and displays a list of all the closest "items" to them taken from the database.I have got the finding of the closest items working well but only using a hardcoded latitude and longitude location for the time being but now it is time to implement finding the actual location.Can anyone provide an example of how to have the app find the current fine location in the background and have the app wait. I only need the location once not updates as the person moves. I have implemented a location listener however I understand getting a GPS fix can be slow. I have seen other examples using last known location or implementing the location listener which continues to run and update however as my Activity needs the location coordinates before it can display anything the app just crashes. I need to show a Progress Dialog while its searching.
How can I have the locationlistener run once in the background and then remove location updates once it finds the location. I need the rest of the application to wait until it has a GPS location or timeout after say 20-30seconds. I would like a ProgressDialog up so the user knows that something is going on, but it just has to be the spinning loading animation not a percentage or anything. If possible I would like the user to be able to cancel the dialog if they are sick of waiting which then they can search by typing suburb etc instead.I have been trying to do it with threads but it is getting way more complicated than I feel it should be and still not working anyway. On iPhone this is much more simple?Can anyone provide a nice way of doing this, I have been ripping my hair out for a week on this and it is really putting me behind schedule for the rest of the app completion date.

I created a custom dialog that extends Dialog. One button on that the dialog is an "OK" button which the user is expected to press when finished entering information in other fields. I cannot get any listeners set to that button to fire.

Is there any way (the best way) to avoid this happening? I am using a ProgressDialog which has one cancel button. On clicking the cancel button I want to disable the cancel button and change the message to "Canceling...". That bit's easy. Only once the cancellation has been fully processed do I want to dismiss the dialog. The only way I can think of is to use a custom layout but I would rather keep the default dialog look and feel (rather than trying to simulate it with my own code).

First of all, I just want to say I am a software developer, but I am not an Android developer. However I usually walk around and think on stuff. AndI've been recently thinking all the news concerning how fragmented Android is getting, with different Android versions and tweaks by different phone manufacturers, and then for developers you have different size formats. An example would be that HTC Tattoo might not be able to run everything that another phone might run, due to different screen formats, etc. And now the Android tablets are coming with different Android versions and different screen sizes, all from 5" to 11". Will this make developing Android applications harder? Apple has it safe here since they manufacturer all devices that run the iPhone OS: the pods, phones and now the pad so they can easily control and make sure not to loose any customers by introducing a new device. When Apple introduced iPad they had to make sure that all the old iPhone applications would work on the iPad. They solved that neatly by saying that iPhone applications will simply be stretched out to the double size and it would fit on the iPad. Unfortunately Android does not have the same luxury to do this. As I said, I am not an Android developer. Just a curious software developer For you guys who work actively in the Android community, does Google have a solution for this? Will you be able to run phone applications on the tablets? when I click on one item in the ListView that item's background changes to light gray, but when I continue to scroll through the list every 4th item has the background changed to light gray even though those other items have not been clicked. How do I make only the item I clicked be effected by the click?

The problem: my startup code is mostly GUI related, hence needs to run on UI thread.

I have a ListView in my Activity. I am trying to catch both a click and a long click (which should bring up a context menu).

I notice that if I have both the click and long click listeners up, I won't ever get the long click listener (i.e. the context menu). If I remove the setOnItemClickListener() call, i get a call into

I have just started my career as an android programmer, and am currently relying heavily on the sample code and api examples. I have been working with this api example, to produce an expandable list of items (note this example does not use the ExpadableListView).In playing with the example, I tried to add another widget that would become visible and be gone at the same time as the text (mDialogue in the sample code). This works well with another TextView, but as soon as I tried to add a button widget, it stopped working. The list would expand on first click, showing my hidden TextView and Button, but it will not disappear on further clicks. The button is however, clickable, and I was able to set up an onClick listener to change the button text back and forth.I'm starting to wonder, is it just not possible to have a clickable item inside a clickable list item? Or is there some kind of work around? Would it solve my problem if I used ExpandableListView?

I have a dialog with edittext for input. when i click yes button on dialog, it will validate the input and then close dialog. However, if the input is wrong, i want to remain in the same dialog. every time no matter what input it is, the dialog always automatically close when i click button. How can i disable this. By the way, i use PositiveButton and NegativeButton for the button on dialog

I am having a problem about repeating Login dialog (an AlertDialog) and progress dialog, coordinating with http thread. I suppose repetitive Login dialog (if fail, continue) handling should be common and straightforward. I guess my approach must be wrong somewhere. I already spent 2 days on this and am desperate. So please help. User starts the app, the main activity starts.Show a login dialog (generated by the main thread, i.e. from on Create. The main thread then starts a wait_thread, which will wait for http to return data and check the data and decide what to do.After user input username/password and press login, a progress dialog starts.The progress dialog starts an http_thread to talk to the server and get replies. Once done, it will notify the waiting thread.If the user type in the right username password first time, the code works fine.But it always fail for 2nd time Login, i.e. When first login fail(wrong username/ password),the wait_thread will generate 2nd Login dialog to let user repeat the login process. But after user hit the login on this 2nd Login dialog, the system always crashes.

I'm trying to get my list view to open up an alert dialog to display information when a person clicks on a selection. I used the Clockwork, un-revoke tool which is suppose to root your phone. My intention was not to root my phone but to run recovery. I wanted to downgrade so I went thru the motion and it said everything was done/successful. Now, I don't want to be rooted. I am thinking of exchanging my phone for the Droid X.
I went into the terminal and did some root things but they were unsuccessful like "whoami", tried to unmount file system,etc. I am running "sudo <whatever command>" and "su" so it fails. I assume I'm not rooted but why would unrevoke app say I am? I am struggling to downgrade using Linux (different topic) but for now, I want to confirm my phone is not rooted.

how to create an Alert dialog in a dialog? is it possible to create? My requirement is to show mulitple dialogs simultaneously. I tried creating with the following code snippet onClick of a Button in the first Dialog and got an "BadToken" exception from WindowManager: "Unable to add window -- token null is not for an application"

I have a really weird problem, which I am unable to debug so far. thing is. my app needs to download something to work. So in the beginning of the onCreate() method, I check if that something is already downloaded. If not, I pop a dialog up asking the user to download it.My dialog is shown and I am clicking, so aManager.install() is called. I am passing the context because that aManager.install() pops up a ProgressDialog to show downloading progress and spawns a new thread in which everything is downloaded. So obviously before creating my dialog I make a Handler to receive the response from that aManager.install(). And the response MAY vary, because for example the internet connection isn't available (Exception raised and catched and listener called with different code).Now, when that happens (Exception) I would like to call another dialog saying "something went wrong, would you like to retry?" so another call to showDialog(DIALOG_REINSTALL) (this time with another code).thing is the showDialog() gets called (I can verify this by logging) but the dialogs doesn't show up. Instead my application JUST HANGS Does someone have a clue why it's doing this? No exception raised, absolutely nothing from logcat, I can't tell WHERE it's hanging...just see that the method is called and the dialog should be displayed.

I'm a bit of a wanna be geek here so forgive me if this is obvious. I just followed the sticky instructions for going from 1.5 to 2.1 root on the Eris. I'm not confident that I did it correctly though. I am wondering if by accident I just simply upgraded my operating system to 2.1 instead. Is there any way I can tell by looking at the "about phone" information if my phone was for sure successfully rooted or not?

I opened ASTRO file manager Menu>More>Preferences and there is a setting to clear the internal caches. I already cleared mine manually through the settings>manage applications so I am not sure if ASTRO clears all the caches on the Eris or not.
Can anyone confirm this?
