View 2 RepliesGI am trying to do a http post to a php script. the method works if I place it in the onCreate event of the application but gets a ConnectionTimeOut error when it tries to execute it from the service.
Here is an example of my method
CODE:...................
I have no idea why the service would get a time out error but the application activity would not.
I need to be able to post XMPP messages in my main activity AND a service that I am running in the background. How can I pass all the XMPP information (including XMPPConnection) to the service so it can use it without twice logging in? Currently I have it setup so I am making 2 XMPP connections. This works, my service continues to send XMPP messages UNTIL I try to send a message in my main activity, then the app force closes. Im assuming because I have tried to login to the service twice.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm confused why is my activity still lagging, I use remote service that has few methods and each has its own work like download stuff, process data, compare stuff, etc... It will run in background and update data at selected intervals and notify user of changes over notify system.
The reason why remote service, because I will eventually add a widget, and service needs to stay running even if android kills the activity, so I unbind it on each onPause().
But as far I understand that part doesn't cause my issue.
But back to my problem... so my is Activity still lagging when I run stuff in service and handler.post method.
here is the code...
Also I wanted to add progressDialog to be updated in updateLayer(...) through Activity is a listener to this service, but thats not working well. Whats the best way to update progressDialog? Ever listener, handler, intent, or what?
So how do I do this correctly?
I have an Android Service which copies files to an ftp server.
While it is doing that, I want to send feedback to my Activity so the user knows what happens.
I tried implementing it using the RemoteMessengerServiceSample code, but I have a problem ... All messages I send during the ftp transfer arrive at my Activity the moment the copy operation is finished ... not message by message while the copy job runs as I would like.
Is there any way to fix this? Maybe i'm using the wrong method for sending messages to my activity?
I have one activity. OnCreate the activity gets the source (html) of a web page to a string and presents the result (after parsing it a bit) in a textview. I would like the activity to reload/refresh periodically to always present the latest information.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been working on an app that uses both GET and POST requests to Web Services. The GET requests are no problems but the POST requests are killing me. I've tried 2 different scenarios in the code. The first looks like this...
CODE:......
This code gets this result for me..."Bad Request (Invalid Header Name)"
Now here's my second piece of code...
CODE:.....
This gives me an entirely different result. It's a long garbled mess of xml and SOAP that does have a SOAP Exception mentioned in it..."Server was unable to process request. --- System.Xml.XmlException: Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1." Now, can anyone shed any light on what I am doing wrong.
I have a Timer which executes a TimerTask every 30 seconds. I only want the timer to launch a new TimerTask if the Activity is displayed i.e. if the user receives a phone call or launches a new activity the Timer will stop. I then need the Timer to restart when the Activity is re-launched and comes into focus.
Now this should be easy, I override the "onWindowFocusChanged(boolean hasFocus)" method and either start or stop the timer depending on the value of has Focus. The way I start the timer is to create a new Timer object and TimerTask each time and the way I stop the Timer is to call the cancel() method on the Timer object and set timer to null.
My problem is this doesn't always work, if I launch the activity which has the Timer and switch orientations quickly (to start/stop the Activity) I find the Timer is not always canceled and I end up with multiple Timers launching TimerTasks at an ever increasing rate.
I have to post messages from one process to another process by using handler .
I am using Handler.post/Handler.sendMessage but i am not getting those messages in another process. I am not getting any exceptions also.
Is it possible to sent messages across processes using Handler?
If it is the case how can i do it?
I'm trying to create a basic sample Stop Watch type application which basically displays a timer. It can then be stopped and started. I'm using the mUpdateTimeTask to do this. However my app just crashed when I run it.
publicclass TimeWatch extends Activity {
/** Called when the activity is first created. */
private Button btnStart;
[Code]....
Whenever the memory needs to be reclaimed, the process is being killed by Activity Manager Service in killPidsForProcess. I have a back button in my activity window on right corner of the title bar.
I want to kill the activity completely on clicking the close button. Can I reuse the same function and will it have any major effect? Please help me out in this.
When a TabWidget is using intents to designate the target Activity for each tab, is there any special handling of those Activities on the Activity Stack outside of the default operation? For Instance, if my app has tabs A, B, and C, and I click them in this order--A, B, A, C, A, B--how will the Activity stack change? My understanding of the default operation, if startActivity() is called each time on the intent, would have the Stack keep loading up new instances of the activities: A, AB, ABA, ABAC, ABACA, ABACAB It's hard to believe that's how it works though... Seems like it would be a waste of resources and could be endless. Can anyone tell me how this will actually work?

I tried with this code:

I tried also to insert the operation in the method onCreate in an Async Task:

I am working on developing an app and I am not sure when should I use a new activity and when should I update the existing view.
For example, lets say I have a view that shows a multiple choice question. Now, when the user selects his choices and clicks on say "Evaluate", I want to show the same question view but along with the right answers and explanations for each option. So does that mean, I should send an Intent upon a click on Evaluate or I should just update the view (i am not sure how)?
If I send an intent and show a new screen, how can the user go back to the next question without displaying the answers? If I don't create an new activity, how can I update the existing view that is already displayed?
I want to hide my application from user so i just want to create service. Can some one tell me how can i create service only with out activity. Can some one tell me can i create only the service in whole project instead of activity. Is it feasible?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'd like to know if it's possible to create a Singleton Service throughout an application ? Let's say I'd like to cerate a Service to play some mp3... I'd like it to be a Singleton, we don't want two mp3 tracks playing through each other (well maybe some would want that, but in my case I'm not making a DJ app) :P Also this Service should be somewhat dynamic as in there should be some interface so that I can stop, pauze and play the mp3 file/ stream. Now I have a couple of questions : - is this feasible ? - should I be using a Service or something else ? - how can an interface be set up in between an application and a service so that I can start, stop, pauze stuff ? - can there be something like a Singleton Service?

I have checked some functions with logging (WeatherService is the class who extends Service):
CODE:........
It gives different hash codes even when I am sure that the same function is running twice (downloading):

I am binding a Activity to the service with:
CODE:.......................
And the service can run for minutes until it is completed, therefore the service can be binded to/created by many Activities.
I'm working on a service for my application whose purpose is to allow easy access to various web services we are running. The service is used to maintain a login state across any applications that want to use it so the user only has to log in once when the service is first started.
What is the best way to go about making the service run asynchronously and call back to the application when it is finished. Currently I am using static classes that extend Thread such as
CODE:.....
And to make it easy to call
CODE:....................
But these functions can only be called by my own application. I want anyone to be able to make a one or two line function call and be able to handle the response easily, preferably in a simple callback method.
I figure it has to be done using Intents to start the Threads, but if I do that I can't pass a callback.

I've read some of the earlier posts on this subject, but I've found them confusing.I'm trying to create a Client Application using Android 1.5 that can call a .NET Web Service using SOAP.I understand that the kSOAP2 library can help here and I've imported that into my Project.I need assistance in correctly using the kSOAP2 library to develop the application.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to create a Servicefor my application which will negotiate Bluetooth connections and data. I want this service's lifecycle to start and end with the Application, but still be able to have specific Activities listen for events that occur within this service (in addition an Activty should be able to call specific methods of the Service to write data or query connection state).
I started by creating AIDL interfaces for my callbacks and service, but I can't figure out exactly what I'm doing.
How is the best way to go about this? EDIT: To be clear, I do not specifically need (or want) more than one process for my application. Right now I don't have more than one; I'm just using AIDL because it is the only way I know of for a Service to communicate with an Activity.
I have a Service that creates AsyncTasks for downloading files. In activities, we create Runnables or Threads that we pass to Activity.runOnUiThread(). I can't access that method from a service, so how do I use AsyncTask correctly, (do heavy work without blocking the UI Thread)?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to create a service that runs on Android which can collect all of my location information. Either write the information to a file or send to a server using 3G/wiki network. I was thinking about using a service that runs forever as a daemon. After reading "Diamonds are forever, services are not" by Mark Murphy, I realized that it is not a good idea. However, I need to somehow acquire the moving trajectory information on the Android phone. Without a daemon service running forever, how do I do that ?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm new to the android platform, and I need to create a background service that listens for actions from different applications, the home activity, menu items in different apps, etc. Is it enought to call several event listeners and pass the different home activity events (and events from other activities) to the listeners? If so, what exactly to I pass to my event listener? Is the home activity an object that I can call? What is it and how do I pass it? Otherwise how to I listen for user interaction with variouse elements of a given view/activity? I need the listeners to trigger an activity that occurs before the event they asked for. For example. 1. They press the arrow button on the homescreen. Before it pops up, a picture pops up on the screen.
