Android :: Periodically Refresh / Reload Activity
Sep 13, 2010
I have one activity. OnCreate the activity gets the source (html) of a web page to a string and presents the result (after parsing it a bit) in a textview. I would like the activity to reload/refresh periodically to always present the latest information.

After implementing some Android Apps, including several Map activities, I try to refresh the activity when the GPS listener's onLocationChanged() mehtod is called. I have no idea how to tell the map activity to refresh on its own and display the new coords. the coords to store will have to be in global values, so that the location listener will have access to it. In my sample GPS-class (see code below) I just changed the text of a text view....but how to do that in map view?

I am writing an Android app, part of which will be a survey involving multiple pages of checkbox question and answers. I have created an activity to display the question and options (from the DB) and what I want to do now is when i press the "Next" button it should just reload the current activity with the next question set from the database. (the activity starts with survey.getNextQuestion() - so its just a case of refreshing the activity so it updates)

I have an application, where I need to change the language through a settings menu. Now this part works perfectly, but it doesn't change the language for activities that have gone through onCreate.
I got a TabHost, and 2 tabs in it, from the tabs you can get to settings.
Refreshing the TabHost isn't an issue, as it's fairly small, however both the 2 tabs are quite large views, and having a function to manually update all the strings seem unnecessarily difficult. Is there any way to force the activity to recreate itself and trigger a new onCreate?
I tried having a static function in the tabhost that clears all tabs and recreates them, this refreshes the tab titles, but not the content in the tabs.

I have a language setting in my application. When the language is switched, I would like all the textviews etc to change language immediately. Currently I just change the locale in the configuration, so the language has changed when the user restarts the activity.
Solution to my problem would be to make each textview load the new resources each time the language is changed. Is there a better solution? Perhaps a neat way to discretely restart the activity? Or maybe just force reload of the resources?

I have a START and STOP button in the main screen of an App. there are some GUI and threads that are instantiated when I click on START. When I click on stop, I want everything to be stopped and the activity should come back to its origin state. To the state that is exactly same like when launched (when we tapped on App icon in mobile).Is it possible to do this? I tried with finish() , this killed the app and exited . I don't want to exit from main screen. rather, on clicking STOP I want app to come back to origin or born state.

I have created map view using XML layout in MapActivity and want to use this map view in another Activity group. I got mapview object in Acitivity group using GetWindow.Decorview(), MAP view is also displayed in the same layout of Activity Group. But without any image, only white background with some grid. Map view is not getting refreshed when i scroll on Map view. But if i launch independently MapActivity , i am able to see the map and it is getting refreshed when i scroll on the map. May I know how can i use and refresh Map view in an activity group? As Mapview can only be created/inflated in MapActivity.

I have an Android Activity with a RelativeLayout and I have implemented the following method to prevent the activity from being recreated on change of Orientation:
CODE:..............
I am obviously not doing anything in this method, but it worked perfect when using a LinearLayout. Now however, using RelativeLayout, my layout is all messed up when changing to landscape orientation.
What is the most efficient way to have the screen redraw correctly without having the activity restarted again with a call to onCreate?

I'm writing an application for Android and have multiple Activities, there are three to be exact. When a user drills down to the record they would like to view, they can modify it.
The issues is that when I click the back button to move to the previous screen, i'd like to refresh it to reflect the update performed by the end user. I can't figure out how to hook onto the appropriate event and then refresh my data on that view.

I have successfully been getting GPS data through the registerLocationListener() and onLocationChanged() methods. The only problem with this is that the speed reading of my app freezes if there is no more GPS data (e.g. when I go indoors, enter a tunnel, etc). The behavior I want for my app is that the user is somehow notified that the speed reading is probably not accurate due to a lack of fresh data (set speed to zero, blink the speed reading, etc). How can I do that? I though of checking periodically whether the GPS unit was detecting any satellites, but I'm not sure how to force periodic checks.

I'm developing sort of a wireless scanner, so I need to scan every X seconds. I know I should use WifiManager and startScan() to get the networks and then register a receiver to receive the event once the scan has finished. However I'm having problems when trying to figure out how to scan periodically. It's more like a design problem. My solution so far has been to create a Service which takes care of the scanning, besides the main Activity.
I think this is correct. So, how could I tell this Service to scan every X seconds? I've thought it may have a Thread object, call its Scan method during tart_services() and then take it to sleep. Also I thought I could just get rid of the Service and run the Thread from the main Activity, but then I guess it would die whenever the Activity is not visible. None of then seem like a really good solution to me, and I think there must be an easier way to do this.

We have a very patchy wi-fi network here. The wi-fi router's pretty old and I tend to need to switch it off and on every couple of days. Is there an app I can use that will - perhaps in conjunction with Locale so it only runs when I'm in the office - periodically check if our wi-fi connection is up and running?

I currently use SMS Backup & Restore, but that has two drawbacks I see
-I have to manually initiate the backup
-It only stores and restores one file, so I have to overwrite and rename
I just lost my texts and only had a two day old backup. I'd love to see the same thing but that can do it with a timestamped file such as backup_2009-12-18-15-08.xml (pickable when restoring) and can run at a preset time each day or each half day.

If I want to upload a text file containing some game stats to a web server for testing purpose, which approach is the best? Do I write a service along with my application and then upload the log file once it reaches a specific size? Or do I embed the logic into my application and then do it during idle times?

I never got this working in a straightforward manner. Sorry if I'm being a little vague. I'll try to elaborate on what I'm trying to do. I am trying to build a listview that grabs its data from a webservice. Once I initialize a listview, I want to keep polling the webserver periodically and update the contents of the listview. For this I am doing something like this:
public class SampleAutoUpdateList extends Activity {
//Autoupdate handler
private Handler handler = new Handler();
private Runnable updater = new Runnable() {
public void run() {
/*
* Update the list
*/..................................

Well needles to say I can no longer start it up. This tablet has no model number on it, not even in the instructions.

i have a application that displays tasks and i created an option in the Settings menu that lets you choose in how many days all (Never, 10 days, 20 days or 30 days) these tasks should be automatically deleted. So when i open up the app there will be a method that will be called and check if theres any tasks to be deleted. I did that to challenge myself, but i'm hitting the wall with my head and i cant come up with something. So here i am in need of help! A little more information: i was trying to do something with java/android code, but from past searches i saw people dealing with it using SQL functions. Is it better?
