Jul 4, 2010
Alright, so I followed a tutorial on the Android website, and I got a ListView going in my application. But, the example they had did everything in Java basically. How could I transform the following code to XML?

Is there any way to change the default location of R.java file which is getting created in "gen" folder? By default R.Java will get created in gen folder under the package (of the application) directory. I have a common code (with UI) which has to go with different applications with different package names/branding. When ever I change the package name in manifest file, R.java will created inside that package so I have to change the import statement in all the files with the new location of R. How I can avoid it? Also is there is any provision to have two or more R files in one application?

I have added a menu to ListView Activity and wanted to allow the user to select the information that would be displayed in the ListView. So for example:
The ListView is populated in the onCreate method.
The user selects an option in the menu.
Upon the user making this selection the ListView would be populated with a different array.
Is onResume() executed after the menu is closed? I would test this but I am not currently home.

I have Activity with ListView inside it and in the onCreate method of the Activity I have code for populating the Data of the ListView this Data is a server based and so populating includes calling Network URLs. I have the ArrayAdapter of the ListView in the Same Activity Class.
Now the Issue I'am facing is that, in Rest all scenarios my Activity is behaving in a proper way but when the Orientation [ Portrait to Landscaped or other way round] is taking place the Data is Getting lost and Newer Data calls are Required to Populate the Same Old Data now this is something that is not intended out the code how should I deal with it.

How can I change background color of ListView items on a pair-item basis. When I use android:backgroundColor in the ListView item layout I can achieve this, however the list selector is no longer visible. I can make the selector visible again by setting drawSelectorOnTop to true but then the selector overlays the whole item.
Any ideas how to change those background colors and keep the selector?
I would rather not change the selector itself.
Authors of GMail application have managed to achieve exactly this so it's definitely possible.

I can't seem to get a customized divider, using a Drawable I've defined, to work when using a ListActivity and not creating a custom ListView. It almost seems like when the VM creates its own ListView for me, with the ListActivity, it uses a theme with the default divider provided; and if I try to provide one, no dividers appear in the ListView at all.
I know that I can create a custom ListView using XML and define android:divider on that ListView, and this does recognize my custom divider Drawable. But I would prefer to just let the ListActivity create its own ListView, if I can figure out how to get my own divider working on it.
Here's the code I'm using now:
CODE:............

I have a ListView populated via a CursorAdapter. I give my user the ability to alter the data in the list. For example, the user can mark a row as being unread (the data are messages).
Suppose my user marked a row unread. Would a proper implementation mark the row in the database as read and then requery the Cursor?

Im trying to display this listview, but I keep getting a: 07-17 21:14:22.233: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(349): java.lang.NullPointerException
I think I know what the problem is but I dont know how to fix it.
I have a String array which I will be using to be displayed in my list
CODE:.....
Dont worry the parser works great. the only problem I see with it is that the parser doesnt know how many strings the website will have so I am setting the String array in the parser to be very big: String substr[] = new String[250];
But I know that mostly there are only like 11 to 13 values that I will be storing in that array, the problem I think is when i do this:
CODE:..............
Since the String array is set to have up to 250 values in it and I only actually store say 12 then there are a null entries so when I run the code it shows me my list view, but when I get to the bottom of the view it force closes and the log tells me that there was nullpointer. I can tell how many entries I collected while I am parsing, but how do I tell my listview to only show say 12 items in the list so there wont be any null entries. or is there any other solution for my problem.
I tried doing what you said, but now I am getting a:
CODE:......
This is what I did:
CODE:.................

I am writing a adapter for a specific app, the problem I met is:
I have only 1 listview in main.xml, and the row style is defined in file_row.xml. If I simply use list.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.file_row, R.id.file_name, items)); where items is a ArrayList<String>, everything works well.
But if I use my custom Adapter, say, list.setAdapter(new MyOwnListAdapter(this, filename)); and in the class of MyOwnListAdapter, the code has been simplified as
CODE:................
But I always met the problem which is:
CODE:.........
I thought the self-defined Adapter class actually has only one line of valid execution, which is super(context, R.layout.file_row, R.id.file_name, filename_list); It's essentially identical to direct calling of list.setAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.file_row, R.id.file_name, items)); Then why I always got this error if I call my own Adapter?

I'm using ListView to display images which I provide through an ImageAdapter class. it works great on my device (and on many other devices which I tested it on), but somehow when I'm using the emulator and I'm long-pressing the up/down button - I'm getting an outOfMemory error after 10-15 seconds.
I tried clearing cache, canceling cache, etc. - nothing helped.
I know this crash is pretty rare (i couldn't reproduced it on any "real" device), but I can see on DDMS that "GC freed" are getting bigger during that long press and I can't find a way to clear them.

I'm having some problems porting a Java application to work in Android platform. I detected an incompatibility problem between java sun and Adroid sdk in java.lang.Class. I oberved that: public Field[] getFields() Returns an array containing Field objects describing all fields which are defined. That's array is sorted as attributes are declared in the main Class in sun jdk. For example, next Class is defined as: public class Example { public boolean stop; public int atr1; public String name; ....
}

There must be a way to do this. How can you tell a ListView that has a header to not scroll it when the user scrolls the contents? I want it to stay in a "stuck" position so that the user can always see what column the content applies to.

I do an import of the full package name / java file, and if I do a <classname>.<method>, SOMETIMES I can get it to access - other times I get a lot of can't use a static in a non static bunch of talk. I'll admit I'm new to Java, so what do I need to do? Call a class instance first, then call my methods? I'm rather confused by this, as I want to put all of my 'functions' into a FunctionsList.java file, and all of my main Activity (UI) into a MyActivity.java file.
For example:
<MyActivity.java>
import com.example.FunctionsList;
private class MyActivity extends Activity {
FunctionsList.function();
}
9/10 times I get that static/non-static error. If I put all of my functions into MyActivity.java, I have zero problems!

I was going through the code for Activity.java and ApplicationContext.
Both these classes define many functions of Context Interface. Take for example startActivity.java
Activity Class has its own implementation of startActivity ApplicationContext class also has an implemenetaion of startActivity.
Now there are 2 observations...
CODE:..........
Questions: 1. Who uses ApplicationContext class? 2. Does Activity class ever deal with ApplicationContext class (as given in the javadoc comments of ApplicationContext.java).

ListView list = (ListView)findViewById(R.id.snListView); then:
list.setAdapter(adapter);
In addition there are login.xml layout - there are:
<ListView
android:id="@+id/snListView"
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent" >
</ListView>
and sn_row.xml:
[Code]...
At the moment I have cell's height 100dp, I need that cell's height will depend on device, I mean I have here 5 cells showing at login screen in ListView and I need that these 5 rows will fit the ListView (cell's height = ListView's height/5).

I'm wanting an app that lets me create profiles and toggle them on and off from my home screen. So far, I've found a couple of apps that seem to do this. Primarily what I want to do is to be able to get in my car, toggle a widget on my phone screen and turn on GPS, Blue tooth and Auto brightness. My phone is plugged in in my car so none of these settings matter to me that they drain the battery and I use the phone as a GPS unit in my car. When I get out of my car, I want to be able to toggle to one of two other profiles. One would turn GPS and Auto Brightness off and leave BT on and the other would turn all three off. (When I'm at my office I don't use my BT headset as the handset is sitting right at my desk.) Secondarily, I want to be able to have scenes on my phone change automatically. I've got one that I use for work and another that I use for home. It would be great if I could have it set up so that the work scene was on from 8-5, M-F and then it flipped to the home scene at all other times unless I manually changed it. It doesn't look like Setting Profiles supports this, but I'm wondering if Locale does. If neither app supports this, it's not a huge deal.
