Aug 18, 2010Is there any way to change the default location of R.java file which is getting created in "gen" folder? By default R.Java will get created in gen folder under the package (of the application) directory. I have a common code (with UI) which has to go with different applications with different package names/branding. When ever I change the package name in manifest file, R.java will created inside that package so I have to change the import statement in all the files with the new location of R. How I can avoid it? Also is there is any provision to have two or more R files in one application?

Android :: Android / Java - Call Function In Separate *.java File?
Aug 16, 2010I do an import of the full package name / java file, and if I do a <classname>.<method>, SOMETIMES I can get it to access - other times I get a lot of can't use a static in a non static bunch of talk. I'll admit I'm new to Java, so what do I need to do? Call a class instance first, then call my methods? I'm rather confused by this, as I want to put all of my 'functions' into a FunctionsList.java file, and all of my main Activity (UI) into a MyActivity.java file.
For example:

9/10 times I get that static/non-static error. If I put all of my functions into MyActivity.java, I have zero problems!

Both these classes define many functions of Context Interface. Take for example startActivity.java
Activity Class has its own implementation of startActivity ApplicationContext class also has an implemenetaion of startActivity.

Android :: Which Profile Changing App?
Jul 31, 2010I'm wanting an app that lets me create profiles and toggle them on and off from my home screen. So far, I've found a couple of apps that seem to do this. Primarily what I want to do is to be able to get in my car, toggle a widget on my phone screen and turn on GPS, Blue tooth and Auto brightness. My phone is plugged in in my car so none of these settings matter to me that they drain the battery and I use the phone as a GPS unit in my car. When I get out of my car, I want to be able to toggle to one of two other profiles. One would turn GPS and Auto Brightness off and leave BT on and the other would turn all three off. (When I'm at my office I don't use my BT headset as the handset is sitting right at my desk.) Secondarily, I want to be able to have scenes on my phone change automatically. I've got one that I use for work and another that I use for home. It would be great if I could have it set up so that the work scene was on from 8-5, M-F and then it flipped to the home scene at all other times unless I manually changed it. It doesn't look like Setting Profiles supports this, but I'm wondering if Locale does. If neither app supports this, it's not a huge deal.

Android :: Poor GPS Accuracy - Changing After Every Second
Jul 16, 2009I'm having a weird problem with GPS accuracy. Basically, I check the GPS accuracy in a background thread after the user clicks a report button, and show the accuracy in a progress dialog, changing second by second. (Code is below.) The following strange thing happens:
1. If the user clicks more or less immediately on the button after taking the phone out, accuracy is unsurprisingly pretty poor to start off with, say more than 100m. But the accuracy never really improves very much while the user is running the background thread. There is some improvement, but it's slow and it never gets very accurate. 2. However, if the user gets the phone out and then waits for several seconds *without* clicking on the button and running the background thread, and *then* clicks on the button, the accuracy quickly improves and becomes very good. When they click on the button, the accuracy shows up as fine - within the same length of time............

However, I wish to change some of the icons it defaults to when I load them up (particularly the Market icon, which defaults to the Recycle Bin).Is there a way to do this manually? or do I need to download another software from the market? I see some people mentioned "Better Cut" but I'm unsure if that does what I am asking, or if it is just a replacement for Open Home.I'm not too savvy poking around the Android OS at the root.

Love reading this message board, XDA, Android Guys and all the other sites to learn more every day.However, one thing I've found is its really hard to stay on top of all the apps that are being released on what seems like a daily basis. What's the best way to find the GOOD apps that are being released? I know there is a "just in" section but most of those are junk. Should I rely on Android Guys or sites like this to simply post them or is there a website that tracks this kind of stuff.I used to be a fanboy but now I'm a droid user for life. Really cool to feel apart of a community and seeing dev's on sites like XDA interacting with normal people rather than the old feeling I had with my Iphone where there was "them" then there was "us" and all they wanted to do was profit off us.

Aug 11, 2010This has come up before, but I'm still not clear. I published my first app last night. It sunk like a stone. I want to change its name. I don't want to force the few people who have downloaded it to get an update. It seems to me that if I:
1. Change the android: label in the manifest to be the new name, and
2. Resubmit it with the same version number
Then the name in the market should change but not force an update. Is this correct?
Android :: Best Practice For Changing Min SDK Version?
Aug 2, 2010I have a sizable install base already on some apps with Android 1.5 set as the minimum version. I want to update the apps to take advantage of some of the newer features offered in Android 2.0 and greater. What is the best way forward so I don't break things for my current 1.5 and 1.6 users?
If I simply update the application with a new min SDK version, will 1.5 and 1.6 users be prompted to uninstall? Or will they just not see the update? What about future development that I want to apply for everyone, say a bugfix. Will I have painted myself into a corner? Another solution would be to fork and create a new app for 2.0 users, but that is undesirable for several reasons.
Android :: Is There An App For Changing Max Icon Number?
Mar 11, 2010I liked how on my LG Dare that I could drag icons onto the home screen and place them how I want (not locked to a grid). Not only could I arrange them however I wanted, I could also place as many as I could fit (almost). Is there a widget or app that allows me to place a "box" on the home screen to toss apps into. Right now I've found 'More Icons widget" but that only allows me to place 4 icons into the spot of 1, which makes them very tiny and arranges them in a square. Anything else out there?

May 2, 2010All my contacts from my old phone seem to have been saved as Google contacts. But when I have been adding new contacts to the phone the past few months, for some reason, I always choose to not add them as Google contacts so they weren't synced to my Gmail. When I check my GMail contacts, all my old phone contacts are there, but not my new ones. Is it possible for me to change existing contacts not saved as Google contacts as Google contacts? Otherwise, when I do hard resets, I only get the same contacts from my old phone, and none of the new ones since then.
