Android :: Changing A Divider With SetDivider In A ListActivity Without A Custom ListView?
Oct 29, 2010
I can't seem to get a customized divider, using a Drawable I've defined, to work when using a ListActivity and not creating a custom ListView. It almost seems like when the VM creates its own ListView for me, with the ListActivity, it uses a theme with the default divider provided; and if I try to provide one, no dividers appear in the ListView at all.
I know that I can create a custom ListView using XML and define android:divider on that ListView, and this does recognize my custom divider Drawable. But I would prefer to just let the ListActivity create its own ListView, if I can figure out how to get my own divider working on it.
Here's the code I'm using now:

I have a listview in which there should be different divider height between different rows. So, how can we set the divider height dynamically?
Suppose, I have 10 rows and there should be a divider height of 5 between first 2 rows and then there should be a divider height of 1 between next 5 rows and so on.

I wanted to change the divider height dynamically. From whatever I have searched it seems that it is possible through setting divider as part of each item in listview. But I am not very clear with this. So, can someone be more specific as how can one make the divider as part of item in listview?

I create a ListView in my activity and set its ChoiceMode to CHOICE_MODE_SINGLE, I also set its layout to simple_list_item_single_choice. But when i click on it onItemSelected() is never called and getCheckedItemPosition() returns -1. Why? the sample List10.java of ApiDemos uses ListActivity works well which just set the same as I done in my app. Any ideas?

I want to create a custom list view in my application. I want it to lay over the top of the application screen, with portions of the screen not filled by the listview showing the underlying application. I've been reading about ListActivity, how it can be started to handle item selected callbacks. I've also read about people simply inserting onClick handlers into the listview as it is drawn. I'm trying to decide the best way to proceed. Is it "dirty" to attach onClick handlers to the rows of a listview? It doesn't seem like the best approach, for instance, it only handles Touch Mode, not the DPAD clicks. This approach doesn't seem like what the architects had in mind. On the other hand, I don't see a good way that I can start a list activity and still have access to all the application variables I need. Do I pass the application in the context and refer back to it from even handlers after casting the context back to it's original class?

I would like to write a rather simple content application which displays a list of textual items (along with a small pic).I have a standard menu in which each menu item represents a different category of textual items (news, sports, leisure etc.).Pressing a menu item will display a list of textual items of this category. Now, having a separate ListActivity for each category seems like an overkill (or does it?)
Naturally, it makes much more sense to use one ListActivity and replace the data of its adapter when each category is loaded. My concern is when "back" is pressed. The adapter is loaded with items of the current category and now I need to display list of the previous category (and enable clicking on list items too)
Since I have only one activity - I thought of backup and load mechanism in onPause() and onResume() functions as well as making some distinction whether these function are invoked as a result of a "new" event (menu item selected) or by a "back" press. This seems very cumbersome for such a trivial usage.Am I missing something here?

I am starting with ListActivity.
I saw apidemos and saw that it is based on ListActivity. My doubt is, in my first screen I need a few labels and texts under that a list. How to approach this ? I cant do a setContentlayut(R.id.main) if my activity extends ListActivity, no ?
more over I found the tutorial posted in the forums for ListActivity a bit outdated. Where is 1.5 / 1.6 based tutorials ? because I am new, it is taking too much time to correct 1.1 codes.
lastly, if i have a todo type appfor adding deleting and deleting, should i use 3 different layouts or activities ?

I have some problems when creating a ListActivity.
I have a listview and some other widgets and my listview is filled with a custom adapter.
You can see the images of this activity here:
http://www.grabup.com/uploads/ecd0d0eeb7b947e98b2e0d6c1be5478f.png?di...
Now the problem is. I have a scrollview and all the other views and widgets are placed inside of it. As you can see on the image, I don't see all of my 6 comments (that is the list). When i don't place the scrollview the height of the list is perfect (i have set android:layout_height to wrap_content (to my listview and parent LinearLayout). This is perfect but I have other widgets under the list and when the list reaches the bottom of the screen I can't to scroll to view my other widgets..
How can I fix this? I can set the height of the linearlayout manually but the problem is that the height doesnt has to be the same all the time (it loads the commens from my web service).. It has to fit the height of all the comments (like wrap_content normally does..)
Here is a part of the code with the layout and listview..
CODE:............................

I have added a menu to ListView Activity and wanted to allow the user to select the information that would be displayed in the ListView. So for example:
The ListView is populated in the onCreate method.
The user selects an option in the menu.
Upon the user making this selection the ListView would be populated with a different array.
Is onResume() executed after the menu is closed? I would test this but I am not currently home.

I have Activity with ListView inside it and in the onCreate method of the Activity I have code for populating the Data of the ListView this Data is a server based and so populating includes calling Network URLs. I have the ArrayAdapter of the ListView in the Same Activity Class.
Now the Issue I'am facing is that, in Rest all scenarios my Activity is behaving in a proper way but when the Orientation [ Portrait to Landscaped or other way round] is taking place the Data is Getting lost and Newer Data calls are Required to Populate the Same Old Data now this is something that is not intended out the code how should I deal with it.

How can I change background color of ListView items on a pair-item basis. When I use android:backgroundColor in the ListView item layout I can achieve this, however the list selector is no longer visible. I can make the selector visible again by setting drawSelectorOnTop to true but then the selector overlays the whole item.
Any ideas how to change those background colors and keep the selector?
I would rather not change the selector itself.
Authors of GMail application have managed to achieve exactly this so it's definitely possible.

Suppose my user marked a row unread. Would a proper implementation mark the row in the database as read and then requery the Cursor?

I have a LinearLayout layout with a ListView in it. I've made the android:background of the LinearLayout (I've also tried it on the ListView) be an image that I would like for my background.
This works fine enough. However, when I start scrolling through the ListView, the background often disappears and becomes black. If I move it around some more I may be able to get it to appear again. It would seem that Android is drawing over, or perhaps painting what's behind my background onto the items.
