Android :: ApplicationContext.java And Activity.java - Is ApplicationContext Not Used

Sep 29, 2009

I was going through the code for Activity.java and ApplicationContext.

Both these classes define many functions of Context Interface. Take for example startActivity.java

Activity Class has its own implementation of startActivity ApplicationContext class also has an implemenetaion of startActivity.

Now there are 2 observations...

CODE:..........

Questions: 1. Who uses ApplicationContext class? 2. Does Activity class ever deal with ApplicationContext class (as given in the javadoc comments of ApplicationContext.java).

Android :: ApplicationContext.java and Activity.java - Is ApplicationContext not used

Android :: Application & ApplicationContext ?

Aug 13, 2009

Since activities are the things that interact with the user, they are the only things that can directly show UI. The Application class exists because my arms were twisted into making it. There is nothing actually all that useful about it, as far as I am concerned. ;)

We have several proxy interfaces where we make calls to backend services -- I thought a specialized extension of Application would be useful to hold these proxies as well as a client interface where we make the call, to reduce the number of objects being created and cutting down on Garbage Collection. A singleton if you will. Is this an erroneous assumption?

I also was using the Application as a location to fire off a thread to load globally accessible data needed by the application -- should I move these into an Activity and store the data in the sqllite? It seems like a lot more work to store them in a database if I'm just going to query them the next time the app pulls them down. I plan to write a mechanism to sync the data to local sqllite in the future, I'm just short on time.

I'm currently running into a problem where I'm getting an NPE back from a subsequent activity where this data is not found--even though I saw it being loaded in my Application subclass and stored there.

Android :: Java Compatibility With GetFields Method In Android Java.lang.Class

I'm having some problems porting a Java application to work in Android platform. I detected an incompatibility problem between java sun and Adroid sdk in java.lang.Class. I oberved that: public Field[] getFields() Returns an array containing Field objects describing all fields which are defined. That's array is sorted as attributes are declared in the main Class in sun jdk. For example, next Class is defined as: public class Example { public boolean stop; public int atr1; public String name; ....

I am new to android development and am currently working my way through the "Hello..." Tutorials on the developer website.

I was wondering if all Activities need to be in separate .java files, or am I missing something.

Android :: Android / Java - Call Function In Separate *.java File?

Aug 16, 2010

I do an import of the full package name / java file, and if I do a <classname>.<method>, SOMETIMES I can get it to access - other times I get a lot of can't use a static in a non static bunch of talk. I'll admit I'm new to Java, so what do I need to do? Call a class instance first, then call my methods? I'm rather confused by this, as I want to put all of my 'functions' into a FunctionsList.java file, and all of my main Activity (UI) into a MyActivity.java file.

For example:
<MyActivity.java>
import com.example.FunctionsList;
private class MyActivity extends Activity {
FunctionsList.function();
}

9/10 times I get that static/non-static error. If I put all of my functions into MyActivity.java, I have zero problems!

Android :: Java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable To Start Activity ComponentInfo

Nov 8, 2010

I wrote an android app and so far it works perfect except for on one phone. It is the exact phone that I have with 2.2 on both phones and mine works perfect. The other phone is getting force close all the time but only when opening an activity that queries my image DB and tries to show a gallery. Every activity crashes in the same place, the viewimages. At first I thought it was the intent that was doing it but one of the activitys does not have the intent, it opens the images below the gallery. This works on the emulator, on my moto droid and on a few other different droids. Here is the code for the gallery and my bitmap decoder.

The error is below that.

Android :: Java To C++ Bridge

Sep 18, 2010

I know there are plenty of tutorials about integrating C++ into Java, but whats about the other way around, a Bridge from Java to C++?

The reason i'm asking this is Android.

Every C++ developer who wanted to write applications for the android noticed at some point that there is no serious (mature) C++ api for android (infact, android is lacking an implementation of the STL).

The only API that is mature enough to write android applications in, is Java. So instead of writing an api from scratch, wouldn't it be possible to use the Java Classes from C++?

I know that this sounds merely like an unrealistic dream, but that way most C++ developers weren't forced to learn a new Language.
