Android :: Can I Have WebSMS To Replace Stock Droid SMS App
Mar 12, 2010
I use fishtext to send SMS (as it is REALLY cheap), but fishtext doesn't provide a Android native app.
I have just bought my N1 and it will arrive next week.
I came across WebSMS (websmsdroid - Project Hosting on Google Code) and it integrates to fishtext (According to some reviews I read).
I would like to replace the stock sms app with WebSMS, is that possible? I don't want to be using the stock SMS app by accident and end up paying loads for SMSs I send. (I send about 1K SMS monthly).

So i installed nexbeast last night.... and I like the theme alot but i used petes script to delete the stock mms application. And the nexus theme has a shortcut on the bottom of the home screen that is linked to the stock mms app, I use handcent is there a way to replace that shortcut? There is an advanced shortcut menu in the configure menu that shows a shortcut saying application package. it reads com.android.mms I am hoping I can replace that with a handcent command but not sure what to do. Any ideas?

I know I've been posting lots of noob questions today, but I am a noob to rooting and I'm trying to get everything straightened out.
When I flash an sbf file, particularly the one that returns to 2.0.1 stock, does that replace 1) the kernel, 2) bootloader, 3)baseband, and anything else I can't think of? lol
I just like to have a backup plan incase something goes terribly wrong and I'm hoping that the .sbf file will replace every single component on my droid so I can start fresh if need be.

This will replace the stock battery indicator with a circular bar that includes percentage remaining. I flashed this on the DC 3.5 ROM and it works perfectly.

Seeing as Motorola is locking down the Motorola Droid X and likely the Droid 2, what should I replace my Moto Droid with? I've been totally happy with the phone to the extent that I tell people it's the coolest thing I've ever owned in my entire life... that's 51 years for you youngsters. I'm of course on Verizon and will stay with Verizon. I've paid zero attention to any phones other than the Moto Droids. Alas, lockdown is not acceptable. So now I have to go through the whole learning process all over again.

My application will have some customisation for each company that uses it. Up until now, I have been loading images and strings from resource files. The idea is that the default resources will be distributed with the application and company specific resources will be loaded from our server after they click on a link from an email to launch the initialisation intent. Does anyone know how to replace resource files? I would really like to keep using resource files to avoid rewriting a lot of code/XML. I would distribute the application from our own server, rather than through the app store, so that we could have one version per company, but unfortunately this will give quite nasty security warnings that would concern our customers.

I am using "loadDataWithBaseUrl(...)" to load a html file, stored in assets, to Webview. that contains a string "Loading..." and a rotating GIF. String "Loading..." is hard coded, and it'll not be localized. How to replace that string dynamically, so that it can be localized?

I am now using a Droid Incredible after getting rid of a Windows Mobile devcie and I LOVE IT but the only thing I miss is
1) Being able to transfer Word Docs from my desktop onto my phone and use, read and edit them from my phone
2) Being able to create Documents in general, that I would normally use Word for.

Is there a way to replace the standard ListView that pops up when opening a Spinner with a custom one?
I would like for my Spinner list to be Filterable (and/or even possibly have two tabs with different lists the user could select options from). Is this achievable or do I have to do my own implementation alltogether?

Jus a little background: I have a launch day Moto Droid. Still love it, but it does have some lag issues that are becoming increasingly annoying. I think the issues are caused by either the fact that I'm rooted running one of the first Froyo releases, the fact that the Swype keyboard isn't really meant for this phone, the dropping of the phone (which also cracked the screen, though that doesn't bother me) or some combination of the above. Regardless of the cause, I'm ready for a new phone.
I've been out of the loop, but since I started back in, I've noticed that Gingerbread is on the verge of being released and one of my biggest concerns is buying a new phone that's already outdated. Whatever phone I get, I want it to be able to handle Gingerbread with no problems.
I'm leaning towards the Droid 2, because I like having a qwerty keyboard plus Swype. Will the Droid 2 be OK with gingerbread? Or, should I wait until phones are released that were designed with gingerbread in mind? How lon 'til such phones will be released?

So my beloved Droid is finally starting to show her age. Part of the touch screen has failed on the very right side of the screen as can be seen here:
The phone is still fully functional other than this and appears to be one of the better units out there (runs perfectly stably with 1.2ghz ulv kernels, gets great battery life and has a bubbly keyboard).
Having this portion of the touch screen go out does cause a few major problems though:
-Search hardware button no longer works
-Can't use notification blind in landscape view
-Can't hit backspace on portrait on-screen keyboard
-Many software buttons (like the ones in maps) can't be used in portrait
I have already visited my local VZW store and was assured they have replacement Droid 1s in stock.

Took a ride on my motorcycle last night with Droid in clip on case on my pocket. Drove about 1 1/2 miles when I realized it had fallen out of its holder. I back tracked and found nothing. Then my wife and I took my truck and went along the same route-nothing. Then (at this point mainly worrying about all the data in it if someone had picked it up) I walked with a flashlight the whole route while looking off the side of the road-still nothing. This morning I decided to take my bicycle and give it another try. About 1 mile from my house I spotted the rubber protector that surrounds the screen still near the edge of the road. I got off the bike and found the main section in a hedge so I have the battery and sim card. About 30 ft further I found the screen folded over and crushed. So I guess the battery and card might be ok but the rest is trashed. This one is insured by Asurion with an $89. deductible. (I ran over my previous Droid with my riding mower just this last May and I had to pay full price for a new one as it was not insured). I started a claim online with Asurion and the Droids are on backorder according to the site. I did this last night and reported it lost and possibly then stolen. Now at least I have the pieces.Does anyone think I might have a chance to get it replaced at the Verizon store?

I've been doing a LOT of trying different ROMs and themes, and want to get in to a bit of designing myself. The actual icon designing I can do. What I need to know is the best way to implement it.I'm referring to the icons for specific apps (i.e. Market, Gmail, etc.). I was thinking I could open the .apk and replace the files that way, but that would mean an update for the app would un-do my work, right?I know there are apps out there that replace the launcher that allow you to change icons, but from what I remember, they are normally buggy. Has this changed? So, what is everyone's opinion on the BEST way to replace icons?
