Android :: Calling Built In Quick Lookup Application

Jun 4, 2010

After you select a word, you have the option to copy it, look it up or share it. I find the built in quick lookup app pretty awesome since it has wikipedia, translate and dictionary all combined into one. However, I can't figure out how to open the application directly to lookup other words. And typing in words in the quick search box doesn't look it up either. I'm on Droid Incredible.

Android :: Application Implement Built In Quick Search Button

Oct 18, 2009

I've been trying to make my app implement the built in quick search, similar to how it is done in ApiDemos' "app/search/invoke search". I have tried everything from trying to follow different examples, to copying the code exactly as it is in ApiDemos. All I've found for the former have been concerned with older versions of the SDK, and simply not worked. As for the stuff that I can actually run and see working in ApiDemos, I've tried copying the following

com.example.android.apis.app.SearchInvoke.java
com.example.android.apis.app.SearchQueryResults.java
com.example.android.apis.app.SearchSuggestionSampleProvider.java
res/layout/search_invoke.xml res/layout/search_query_results.xml
res/values/arrays.xml res/values/strings.xml res/xml/searchable.xml
And everything under "Search Samples" in AndroidManifest.xml

This copying gets me a view that looks exactly like the one I'm facing when running ApiDemos, but when I click the search button, in the quick search box, Android always just opens up a browser window, with Google search results for the given query. I simply cannot find the critical component in ApiDemos that tells android that I want to use my own custom code for handling the search request. Both documentation and other online resources seem very lacking when it comes to this.

Motorola Droid :: Messaging Application - Force Close On Lookup

Nov 18, 2009

I have a Droid and download many random apps. Many of them run and I kill them often to not have a laggy performance but it still happens quite a bit. I get many random force closes from all kinds of apps.

Problem:
Steps to Create force close everytime in Messaging:
1. Compose new message
2. Type in "D"
3. Type in "A"
4. *Messaging (process com.android.mms) has stopped (no wait button to choose)
Once A is typed it always force closes (40 times in a row).

Android :: Android Application Be Launched From Built-in Phone Call Log Application

Feb 21, 2010

I would like to know if it is possible to launch my application whenever a new entry is written to phone call log (i.e. out-going, in-coming or missed call). I wrote an application to manage the call log entries as per user preferences by listening to the publication of android.intent.action.PHONE_STATE events. My application is working fine as long as its process is running. However if the user has stopped my application with a task-killer application, then the log entries can not be managed as my app itself was not running. I need a way to make sure that my application is launched in the background if it is not already running when the android.intent.action.PHONE_STATE occurs. Or is it possible to launch my application as a service that always runs?

Android :: Alternative To Quick Settings Application

Aug 12, 2010

Whilst browsing in here and on the web for ways to save battery life, I came across an app for turning on and off WiFi, backlight, bluetooth etc. It had a totally different layout to Quick Settings. The screen appeared to have about 12 square buttons, for quick on/off functionality of the usual stuff. WiFi, bluetooth etc. One of the buttons near the bottom right corner was 2G/3G. Does anyone know which app this may be, from my super description? I like the simple one screen does all layout, which was easy to understand. Can't remember if it was from a link in here, or from another site.

Android :: Car Dock Application Calling Button?

Aug 5, 2010

Interesting thing is that I was playing around with the Car Dock app and decided to add some Favorite Tel Numbers to that screen you see after hitting the Call Button. I added one favorite and it was fine, however I added a second favorite and the screen closed and now when I click on the Calling button in the Car Dock app it does nothing. I am not even sure if this is something I can reinstall as I can't find it in the Market. With Android can you delete an app such as this and reinstall it? I am guessing that would be my fix. I definitely don't want to do a factory reset. Can I somehow delete the data file associated with that app to clean things up. Sorry I have experience with OS but I am new to Android. Just picked up the Droids when it came out and am really loving it up to this point. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Motorola Droid X :: Way To Get A Quick Reply Application?

Jul 18, 2010

So I've been using SMS Popup lately, but I've learned that it doesn't play well with the stock messaging application on the Droid X. It will send text messages that have been sent for a whole day back to certain contacts. Anyway, I've just been wondering what else is a good application for quick reply? I love the interface of the standard messaging application. Sure, I wish I could change some colours, but I'm not going to worry about it as it works flawlessly for me. I just wish more people would start adding a quick reply feature with a feature to turn it off for those that don't care for it. So has anyone come across any good applications like SMS Popup? I'm not really willing to go to Handcent or Chomp when stock app works just perfectly.

Android :: Built In Contacts Application On Android Phone

May 5, 2010

If I get an Android phone, such as HTC Hero or Nexus One (if it comes to Sprint), is the default "Contact" app "Gmail Contacts"? That is, will it automatically sync my Gmail Contacts to the phone's internal "Contacts" database? I like the idea of pushing everything to Gmail (including all my contact info) and I'd love it if the Android phone would sync with all the contacts in Gmail. That way, I will always be backed up and never have to worry about loosing the 500 or so contacts I've built up over the years on my current Palm Treo phone. If I don't like the built-in Contact app on whatever Android phone I end up with, are there better apps for sale that will also sync with Gmail's contacts?

Android :: GPS Lookup And User Preference

Aug 6, 2010

I'm starting to dip my toes into LocationManager. I've created a service which tracks GPS location (interval is more than 60000ms) and updates my application with user location so they can find stuff nearby. As I understand it, users can go into their preferences and disable GPS for a particular application. I would essentially like to offer my users two modes.
1) GPS. 2) If GPS can not pull, device does not have a GPS chip, or GPS is turned off for my app, I would like to allow them to type in their zip code (or maybe switch to cell tower lookup).

The bold text is what I'm interested in. How can I tell if the device does not have GPS? How can I tell if the user has disabled GPS for my application?
Side question: My service gets launched from my 2nd Activity. I call stopService in the onDestroy method of this Activity. If I back up to my 1st Activity and the 2nd Activity is destroyed, I still notice the GPS icon on my phone running. Is stopping the service sufficient? Or do I need to stop the LocationManager in the onDestroy of the service?

So for what do I need a lookup key? I thought that the lookup key does never change and now it changes anyway. I'm confused about that behavior. Can someone explain to me how to link permanently to a contact? Should I use IDs instead of the lookup key?

Most are without the country code or with "00" instead of "+".
