Android :: Securely Identify Calling Application From Java Side?
Jul 27, 2010
I have a native android library (.so) I am bundling with some application. In the native code I want to verify the signer/package name of the calling application.
The reason is, currently anyone can open up the .apk file take my .so file and use it to built their own applications.
Is there a way to securely identify the calling application from Java side? This could be package name, signature or anything else that can identify the Android application in a unique way.

Is there a way I can identify a handset on the server side of an HTTP request? I realize many headers are included on the request, but I am uncertain as to how the handset might be uniquely identified? Perhaps the Sim signature or some such fingerprint?

I am calling a method of another .apk file dynamically at runtime in my application. I can execute it successfully if method does not contain any variable which is defined outside of that method.
But if I am using the variables which are defined outside that method ( in the same activity or same .apk) then my application throws "java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException" at runtime.
For e.g. if method defines as ,

In my Android app, I need to call a non static java method from C/C++. But i get a blunt crash when i do it using GetMethodID/CallVoidMethod()1 methods.
I have done like this:
1. Register the method using GetMethodID() as follows (mine is a cpp file): jmethodID xyz = (env)->GetMethodID( cls, "showxyz", "()V");
2. And I call this method as follows: env->CallVoidMethod(cls, xyz);
3. In java, my showxyz() is defined this way(this basically enables a button which was disabled) void showxyz() {findViewById(R.id.btnPass).setEnabled(true);}
And this crashes.
But I have been using this method of calling Java funcs from C using a set of GetStaticMethodID/CallStaticVoidMethod()(for nonstatic methods) and that works always.
But in this case, I have to call a non-static method and i get a crash.

I'm trying to get my textview to hug the left side of the screen while the button hugs the right side (and if possible just for ocd sake have the text view center itself vertically to be in line with the button) but not do it using absolute values.I thought layout_gravity took care of what I'm trying to do but apparently not.

In the past I have used Python for backend stuff along with Django for frontend stuff, but I don't know how well those two work with Android. Can anyone recommend a good way to go about making server-side software that works well with Android? Please take into account that I also want a web application as a frontend, so the backend should work with both the web app and the Android app.

I was going to contact the dev to see about a fix but it's not showing in the market anymore. I installed Battery Indicator just so I could put two side by side and show the difference. They both do the same exact thing so I'll just stay with the Indicator one.

i read the migration notes for 1.6 and I could not tell if 1.5 and 1.6 can co-exist side by side.i need to build applications for both 1.5 and 1.6, and i only have one build machine.other than changing my PATH variable, are there any other gotchas? especially for an automated build process which will need to build images for both platforms.also, i am a bit concerned about updating the ADT plugin. if I do that (update the ADT plugin), will that screw up my development on/for 1.5?

It seams for every kind of important function, there are at least 2-5 apps.With all the websites and forums there does not seem to be a place where Android apps are compared directly against each other.I'm constantly trying to find the "best in class" app before I download one of them.I'm trying to avoid downloading and removing a bunch of them in a "trial and error" fashion.I am amazed that these types of comparisons have not been done and documented a thousand times over.

Opinions aside, it seems useful to have some lists developed in here with actual comparisons of the relative merits of each of 1.5 and the 2.1 leak.I'm hoping the thread does not degenerate into allegiances for one or the other so much as real data, although the experience users are having is part of the equation and should be commented on.2.1 has this or that, but 1.5 does not. 1.5 is more stable in this area, but 2.1 is not. .. etc.

Interesting thing is that I was playing around with the Car Dock app and decided to add some Favorite Tel Numbers to that screen you see after hitting the Call Button. I added one favorite and it was fine, however I added a second favorite and the screen closed and now when I click on the Calling button in the Car Dock app it does nothing. I am not even sure if this is something I can reinstall as I can't find it in the Market. With Android can you delete an app such as this and reinstall it? I am guessing that would be my fix. I definitely don't want to do a factory reset. Can I somehow delete the data file associated with that app to clean things up. Sorry I have experience with OS but I am new to Android. Just picked up the Droids when it came out and am really loving it up to this point. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

After you select a word, you have the option to copy it, look it up or share it. I find the built in quick lookup app pretty awesome since it has wikipedia, translate and dictionary all combined into one. However, I can't figure out how to open the application directly to lookup other words. And typing in words in the quick search box doesn't look it up either. I'm on Droid Incredible.

I am trying to get my phone ready to sell and I would never sell a computer hard drive without writing zeros to the drive so that my data could not be recovered. I can find no way to do this with my phone.
Recovering data off of a factory reset android is extremely easy (this guy does it in like 5 minutes):(I cant post links so go to gottabemobile dot com and search for the article "Security Guru: Don't Sell Your Android Phone Until Turning it into Swiss Cheese".)
the only semi reliable way to securely erase data would be to do a whole disk overwrite or a whole disk encryption (single file deletion or free space overwrite completely fails on SSD drives).(Search Google for this paper "Reliably Erasing Data From Flash-Based Solid State Drives." This was a study done at UC San Diego.)
I realize that the newer android operating systems have encryption, but I cannot verify if it is whole disk encryption, and if it is not whole disk (encrypting all of the free space on the drive) it would be useless for files that are already deleted (or overwritten considering how wear leveling works, there can be multiple copies of the file spread out over the drive). I could do a whole disk overwrite and then load the operating system back on from download mode?

I'm looking for a way to put three ListViews side by side. Documentation specify that ListView "displays a scrolling single column list". As I'm a bit stubborn, I've done some tests but I only manage to display one ListView which fill all the screen even if I use "wrap_content" or if I put each ListView in a LinearLayout. The final goal is to connect these ListViews together, clicking on an item from the first will update the content of the second, and so on.Should I user ScrollView instead ? For those who will say that three ListViews won't fit in a mobile screen, I trying to make an application for a tablet :)

I'm writing an application wherein users will sometimes make orders through it. I want to give users the option to save their billing info (name, address, etc.) so that it can be quickly restored later if they want to make another order. The user will enter a password to secure the data. Obviously I can't just put this as a file on the device, as anyone can root/find the data. Is there a built-in Android method for storing secure data that is locked with a password? If not, what is a good place to start for storing this data securely using Java?

I have a user's name and password stored in their preferences.
How do I go about passing it back into the webview in a secure way?
I know if I do this it will work, but it just seems bad. There has to be a better way to post the variables.
webview.loadUrl("http://mysite.com?name="+username+"&password="+somepassword);
I've been looking for days and can't find anything, which make me think I'm missing something obvious.

I have used link2sd to link all my apps to my sd card. But link2sd doesn't move the data, it only moves apk and cache and library files. I have asphalt 7 with a data of about 1 gb, and I can use Gl to sd to move the data.
But on Gl to sd download page it is said that it will interfere with other mount scripts and all that. My question : is it safe to use Gl to sd and link2sd side by side, or will it cause any problems???

I need to securely wipe any personal data on my phone and tablet.
On my Linux notebook I just zero the whole disk one or two times and reinstall the OS, with my Android devices it's a little bit more complicated.
Is there a way to securely wipe all my data, for example using fastboot?
Isn't there anything comparable to the good old
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX
So that I can simply flash a new Android OS afterwards? Or at least for the data and cache partitions so that I just keep the OS
A method that definitely works is to just write a file to the data and cache partitions until there is no space left, but I wondered whether there is a "cleaner" solution?
