Android :: Backflip Will Affect Other Droid Devices?
Mar 14, 2010Do you think this is ATT's doing, Motorola's, or maybe Apple? How do you think it will affect other Android devices on other carriers?

View 6 RepliesI like the idea of the Alliance, it is very logical. It raises a question for me though. How do they intend to run apps seamlessly across multiple operating systems? Will the apps all have to be developed in something like Java? I am studying mobile app development, targeting the Android OS, and using Java. I was about to order a load of books(eg hello android) on developing apps for Android today, but I worry the new Alliance platform/technology might render these books and my initial studies obsolete in some way.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWith the press release announcing the latest Motorola Android device, the BACKFLIP, we are getting quite a few questions on the addition of a rear touchpad. As a developer you can take advantage of the touchpad through the standard Android APIs offered in the event model. The experience, however, is unique to the BACKFLIP.
The touchpad responds to trackball events by default, or falls through to keypress events if you chose not to trap trackball events. The BACKFLIP also has 5-way navigation that responds to keypress events. So your application has the option of using the touchpad and 5-way keys in exactly the same way through keypress events, or creating two separate behaviors and experiences.
Be aware that there is a new user setting that enables or disables the touchpad, called BACKTRACK. This is turned on by default but can be disabled by the consumer. For more detailed information on coding for the touchpad refer to our technical library article http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/library/Using_BACKTRACK_Touch....

I got my app to install on the Backflip and started testing it. On the emulator everything appeared ok but on the Backflip there are a few notable differences.
I have edittext boxes which on the emulator automatically vary in size to accommodate the text. The text is a number, the max being two digits, i.e., 1-99. On the Backflip the edit boxes seem to be a fixed width and that width is larger than needed. Consequently some of the edittext boxes go past the end of the screen and can't be used or seen. This doesn't happen on the emulator.
I also have spinners. One set of spinners is created using android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item populated by an array from array.xml. These spinners have the radio button showing and they work on both the emulator and the Backflip displaying a white background with black text.
The other spinner is created using int layoutID = android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item and is populated with strings from the database using an ArrayAdapter. This spinner displays ok on the emulator with a white background with black text. On the Backflip however, it displays the white background but with white text making the list essentially impossible to see. The list is populated because when I press on an item the background color changes to red, the text is white, and the program works ok.
My question is: Are these discrepancies peculiar to the Backflip or am I doing something wrong in the code? I'd hate to think all devices come with peculiarities that require workarounds. Hopefully I'm doing something wrong and hope someone can point out what it is. I'll post any code someone wants to see but right now I don't know what to post. Thanks.
I should add that when I use android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item for the other spinner the text shows up ok but I now have the radio buttons which I don't want.
does it matter if it is enabled or not. Does affect any system updates from verizon. right now i don't have it enabled.i only enable it when i use the app pdanet to tether my phone and computer.is it good to keep disable it

View 1 Replies View RelatedI can't find xscope web browser on my backflip running 1.5 anymore. I've looked on google and I can't find any mention of support being dropped for 1.5 or it being pulled for any reason, so what the hell? Can anyone with 1.5 confirm/deny if you can see it? Is there a website that caches old versions of apps that I could download and install myself?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I plug my Android Backflip into my computer, Windows 7 recognizes it but it never shows up in Eclipse's DDMS. I have the USB Debugging checked under Development on the phone and I can see virtual devices I create just fine in DDMS but never anything at all for Backflip.
Does anyone know of something else that needs to be done? I see some things talking about special tasks for Linux but I am running Microsoft Windows 7!
Anybody excited about this? I have Verizon, but I'm sure there are At&t users who are stoked about getting Android. I think its kind of interesting the that keyboard is sort of the back of the phone.. Check out info on Moto Backflip here.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with the camera and suddenly it goes to the White Screen with the Motorola logo in the middle. Its just stuck there. I've pulled the battery for at least 30 minutes, tried holding down, up, camera, while turning the phone on, no luck. Every time I power it up its just the same white screen. It's doing nothing. Are there any other manual methods of resetting this thing?
View 6 Replies View RelatedA while back I installed CM7 on my backflip when i still used to it (now have Atrix 2) , now I want to start modding it again but it wouldnt turn on, I left it charging for a while and it would just show the white M screen, then a black screen (which was still lit up) and then completely off, then again and again and again etc. on one of those boots i pressed the J and D on my keyboard and unplugged it from the wall and hooked it up to my computer, flashed RSD lite with 2.1 and now it sometimes makes it all the way booting up and after like using it for 5-10 seconds, bam, restarts, I think it is a problem with the software too not a battey issue ( i know the BF has an issue with the battery that makes it restart ), because when I booted up into recovery mode to do a factory reset the phone wouldn't restart like it would the other times, been trying to fix this for two days with two different batterys but sadly no success. I love my backflip and hope it isnt lost forever. Also when I boot it up after flashing with RSD lite it doesnt show me the android setup screen just normal 2.1 boot, then 5 seconds later restarts
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust got my D2 yesterday after spending way too long with the Eris... so far I'm loving it, but I have one question: do everyone's phones seem to randomly open 10-20 apps in background at all times? These aren't even apps I use, like a Sudoku game I haven't tried once yet. I'm not too worried about it, since performance seems to be fine, but I'm wondering if this will affect battery life.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI dropped my phone from a waste level height onto concrete, the phone appears to be in perfect condition but the screen is completely black and unresponsive. I had upgraded the phone, a motorolla Backflip, to Cyanogen 7.1 so it would suck less (still sucks) and what I need to do is somehow fix the screen or maybe view the files somehow from my computer. There was tons of really important school related notes on a notes app I downloaded as well as other really important files. My number one goal is to somehow get these notes or just see them at least in whatever way possible, fixing the phone is not so much of a worry because I already have a replacement. The phone vibrates when it powers up and the LED notification light blinks as it is being charged like its supposed to, the keyboard keys don't light up like they're supposed to and I'm not sure they work, but the home, back, and the other button with the four squares on the front of the phone work and vibrate when tapped but they don't light up either. The phone is clearly on I just can't see it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy Motorola Backflip is just 2 days old. I am facing some issues regarding Android Keyboard and Dialer applications and the Update of the system.
Android keyboard :- application functions improperly on an intermittent basis. When I want to compose a message and I open the keyboard for typing the typed characters are recognized (I can see them popping up) nut in the input box nothing gets typed.
Dialer application - When I want to place a call and hit the Green Call button in left of Home button I face following issues
1) the application takes a few second to appear
2) when I double-click or press and hold the contact to call the desired number the call does not initiate.
Finally I had to restart my phone. In two days this has happened so many times.
Also I tried checking for updates may times. But it said "the device is unable to connect to the server.Try again later."
There are no issues with my Wireless network.I ran Marketplace application and signed into my Google account successfully.
I'm planning to become android developer w/ Android 2.1 SDK For some reason I like to AT&T network. Since Motorola backflip is the only phone available on AT&T and reading recent reports that it only allows apps to be downloaded from Android Marketplace
I've a basic yet very important question:
Is it possible for a developer to write an app and upload to the device? If so my next doubt is how would I upgrade the OS from Android 1.5 to Android 2.1 on my backflip device?
Can I have two separate google play accounts for two different devices & keep one gmail account for both devices?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a mediaplayer object inside an activity that plays from mp3 files situated in the res/raw folder. The MediaPlayer.create(Context context, int resid) method is used to create and return a mediaPlayer object to play this track. What I have noticed is that when the activity is obscured by another activity and hence the "onStop()" method is called , the music continues to play. Can anyone explain why this occurs? I though that onStop would essentially freeze any actions taking place by objects associated with the activity, except for services etc

View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded wall switch, its an app that will automatically switch your wallpaper for you. I had something like this on my pre and loved it. Basically you pick the folder you want it to pick the pictures from, and how often you want it to switch.
Now to the interesting side affect.. One of the settings is Processing method, your choices are auto, crop,or letterbox. If you leave it on auto it places your regular pictures as they should be viewed on your background. It does not force you to crop your picture and end up with a fuzzy picture!
I was super excited when i found this, for years ive had a folder with just pictures i liked to use as backgrounds on my phone. So obviously those pictures wouldnt show the way i would like them to on an android device.
So i figure if you dont want to switch your background but would like it to appear as it should without having to crop it, you could create a folder with 2 of the same picture in it and set it to switch between those...
You might even be able to mess around with the settings and get it to work with just one... im thinking that you may be able to set the switch interval to 0:00 or something like that, but im not sure on that..
I am developing my am on mac (10.5.8), on eclipse and SDK 1.6 and a Vodafone HTC Magic Everything was working ok up to a few days ago. I can not see my device on adb devices. I also got a Sony Xperia and I can not see it on the list either. I upgraded the phone software (the HTC) to 1.6 a few days ago. Maybe that is what caused the change, but I could not be sure.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIve been trying to implement a limit to prevent the user from scaling the image too much in my multitouch zoom app. Problem is, when i set the max zoom level by dumping the matrix, the image starts to translate downward once the overall scale of the image hits my limit. I believe it is doing this because the matrix is still being affected by postScale(theScaleFactorX,theScaleFactorY,myMidpointX,myMidpointY) where theScaleFactorX/Y is the amount to multiply the overall scale of the image (so if the theScaleFatorX/Y is recorded as 1.12, and the image is at .60 of its origional size, the overall zoom is now .67). It seems like some sort of math is going on thats creating this translation, and was wondering if anyone knew what it was so i can prevent it from translating, and only allow the user to zoom back out.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI originally setup my Droid with my Google Apps account as primary. A few months ago I decided to buy a paid app in the Market and couldn't do so using my Google Apps account. Reluctantly, I added my Google Account as a secondary account on my phone, which allowed me to purchase apps in the Market. Now that I can finally use Google Checkout with my Google Apps account, I would like to remove my Google Account from my phone, since I'm tired of being prompted to select an account each time I create a new contact. Will removing my secondary account affect apps that are already installed? What about when updates become available for these apps in the Market?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI noticed a few days ago Friday that my battery all of a sudden started draining faster; a lot faster. I did a FDR Tuesday night and through most of the day Thursday it was much better. Thursday evening i started reinstalling apps to test if it was actually better and noticed as soon as i did that the phone was never sleeping again. My up time and awake time were almost the same as soon as i reinstalled everything. So last night I uninstalled everything again except for swype. I'm going to watch it today but I'm not sure what to expect. Have you seen swype affect your battery life.
