Android :: Adding A Custom ImageView To Main Layout
Sep 15, 2010
I was looking over this code about extending an ImageView: http://marakana.com/forums/android/examples/98.html
And i was wondering how can i add the new View to an existing xml layout file, along with some other views.
Already i did this inside my main linear layout:
CODE:..........
But the problem is that this way the onDraw method doesn't get called.
Maybe some examples where you combine CustomViews with xml layout.

While developing for Android, I am unable to open more than one main.xml file in an Eclipse editor at a time.Each time I open one, it simply replaces the editor (tab) of the first main.xml with the new one, instead of opening a new tab - even if the contents of the existing tab were unsaved.Even stranger, I can open multiple main.xml files from different projects with no problems.This only happens when they're within the same project.

I have been trying to use a ScrollView on a single ImageView with a JPG (~770 x 1024) over an AVD that's 600x800.
My main.xml is code...
It is important for me to avoid stretching the image. I can not use FIT_XY for ScaleType.
What is the recommended way to implement a display of a page that can be potentially scrolled?
Do I have to do it manually with a plain layout and scrolling upon GestureDetector.OnScroll events?

I have a layout with an image on it (embedded in an ImageView). I need to rotate the image (let's say) 90 degrees CCW. I've written code to animate the image rotating. The image smoothly rotates 90 degrees, but then snaps back to its original state. This is what the Android documentation says will happen after an animation completes. Presumably, on the notification that the animation has ended, I'm supposed to transform the ImageView (or the underlying drawable), and possibly invalidate it to trigger a redraw. All well and good, except that I can't find a way to do it, and I can't find any examples of anyone else doing it. I tried using getImageMatix/setImageMatrix on mImageView, with no apparent effect. There are subclasses of Drawable that will rotate an image, but there is no setDrawable() method on ImageView, so I don't see how to use one.

<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"

<TextView
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:text="@string/hello"
/>
</LinearLayout>
Since the root element is a LinearLayout, which extends ViewGroup, why does main.xml get turned into a View instead of a ViewGroup? For example, in my main Activity class, I try to get the number of subviews that the LinearLayout contains like this:
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
ViewGroup vg = (ViewGroup) findViewById(R.layout.main);
Log.v("myTag", "num children: " + vg.getChildCount());
but it crashes when i call vg.getChildCount(). What is the right way of doing it?

I would like to have a layout with 5 times 5 buttons. Each of them should have the same width and height (they should be square). And I want the whole matrix to use the screen width (or height, depending on rotation).
I currently do it "by hand" in the Java code:
CODE:...........
This can be improved by obtaining screen width first and then dividing by 5 to get rid of this literal 60. But I'm wondering how I can do this in the res/layout XML file? How can I specify for the height to be the same as the width? (I can set the width to match_parent.)

I'm looking for an easy way for the user to see how many drinks they've had for a BAC calculator.
PICTURE OF THE APP, for reference
On button press, I would like an image to be added to the screen, directly under the spinner and with left alignment. When I press the button again, I want another image to be added to the screen.
So if I pressed the add beer button, a drawable of a beer would appear below the spinner. If I pressed the add beer button again, I want there to be TWO drawables of beers under the spinner, preferably with them being added from the right.
(Also, having them reach their width limit, wrapping around, and starting again on the left, but below a full line, would be AWESOME)
I can't figure out how to do this. I assume adding a ImageView in code to a relative layout (because it needs to be positioned to the right) would be the best route, but if it's possible in xml I'd be more than happy to use that.

I need to load several ImageViews into a layout. The ImageViews are used to show a rating using 'star' icons. The number of stars (i.e. the rating is determined during loading by reading a configuration file.
The ImageViews are sitting inside a RelativeLayout layout.
Currently I am using something like this:
CODE:........
My quesions are:
1) Is doing the loading dynamically (not using an xml) is the 'right' way of doing this ?
2) If it is, how do I make the stars display in a line, currently they get placed one on top of the other.

I've made a little test component that overrides ImageView, called myImageView, and prints some text and an arrayList of Doubles over whatever image is specified in the related xml. However, right now, the text and Doubles that are drawn over the image are defined within the myImageView class. Is there a way to pass the data from the main onCreate function to the myImageView class before the layout is drawn?
I'm new to OO programming, but based on my understanding of this:
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/custom-components.html
It's possible because ImageView is just like any other class. This leaves me with two initial guesses:
1. I could generate my test data in the main onCreate, and store it in the array's xml file, and then read that xml file with myImageView,
OR
2. I could extend view instead of ImageView, but because of my new- ness, then I would lose the ability to use it in an xml layout sense - and that's what I really want.

I have a custom view (an extension of a TextView) that I want to dynamically add to my Layout (don't want to include it in the main.xml file).
The book says to fetch the RelativeLayout using findViewById() in my java code then create a new instance of my custom view, then use addView on the RelativeLayout to add the new view.
I'm not getting any errors, but when I click my button to add the new view, nothing is happening (view isn't being added). Do I need to set additional properties on my custom view (layout width, layout height for example) in order for it to be shown?

I have a LinearLayout defined in XML that I want to use repeatedly to display elements of a list. The XML-layout looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:background="@drawable/background"
android:paddingBottom="5px">
<TextView
android:id="@+id/destination"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textSize="22dp"
android:text="@string/test_destination"
android:paddingLeft="5px"/>
<TextView
android:id="@+id/date"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:textSize="15dp"
android:text="@string/test_date"
android:paddingLeft="5px"/>
<TableLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="@+id/info"

android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:paddingLeft="5px"

I gather information about certain events from a webpage, and then I want to display all events in a list using the above layout for each event. My current approach is to have a LinearLayout as parent and then adding each event as a row.
Problem number one is to add the layout to each event (the number of events is varying). I.e., I want to dynamically inflate this layout for each event. I also don't want the text to be hard coded into the layout (as above) but added at runtime. I don't know how to do this. I have tried something like the following without any success.
LinearLayout eventView = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.layout.event);
parentView.addView(eventView);
Problem number two is then to add these layouts to the parent view group and display it on the screen. When I try to do this using parent.addView(child), the program crashes at runtime and I can't figure out why.
It's kind of hard to describe the specific problem, since I'm new to GUI-programming on Android and I'm sort of programming by trial and error right now. Anyway, if you are able to help me with some of the problems it would be greatly appreciated. Linus
EDIT:
The problem now is adding text dynamically to the TextViews. I try this:
TextView dest = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.destination);dest.setText("myText");
only to discover that dest is null. Any ideas why and how to fix this?
EDIT 2:
I have narrowed the problem even more, but I really don't understand its nature. This is the trouble-method: Code...
it somehow works (even though the events are displayed in reverse order). Anyone knows what's going on here?

I'm very new to Android programming, so this is probably something pretty basic. I just have an xml layout with a few buttons. I'm trying to follow the model given by the JetBoy demo, so I'm adding a view to the layout which extends SurfaceView. When this new view is put in my xml layout, I just get a blank screen.
Here's the XML layout if it helps. The gameview element is what causes the screen to be blank

I am using the following method in a new application I'm developing. There is a main activity, which instantiates different classes that extends RelativeLayout and I'm using setContentView to switch between the different modules of the application. I wonder if this is a good approach or necessarily I have to use different activities to the several screens the app haves.

I need to create an application with 4 view. I need to pass from a view to an other simply by a touch and a move to the left or to the right (no button). The effect I would like is the same that you see when you navigate in the main menu of android when you pass from a page to another.
I have tested the ViewFlipper, but I cannot use it: it seems not to catch the touch event correctly. I don't even know if it is the right component.
