I'm confused why is my activity still lagging, I use remote service that has few methods and each has its own work like download stuff, process data, compare stuff, etc... It will run in background and update data at selected intervals and notify user of changes over notify system.
The reason why remote service, because I will eventually add a widget, and service needs to stay running even if android kills the activity, so I unbind it on each onPause().
But as far I understand that part doesn't cause my issue.
But back to my problem... so my is Activity still lagging when I run stuff in service and handler.post method.
here is the code...
Also I wanted to add progressDialog to be updated in updateLayer(...) through Activity is a listener to this service, but thats not working well. Whats the best way to update progressDialog? Ever listener, handler, intent, or what?
So how do I do this correctly?

I've read the android AIDL documentation and have a general idea of how RPC works between an Activity and a Service. However, for my application it seems overboard to implement such features: basically, I want to pass a Service a nice handler so its thread can pass data to my Activity. Currently I'm getting around this by using a static public member (a hack) but I would prefer just passing a Handler object in the Service's starting Intent. However since a Handler isn't serialize-able , I haven't found a way to pass it to the service without a simple static member hack. Any insight? Or, am I just going to have to suck it up and do a formal RPC to the service?

Assume that there activity A and B, A has a handler, now B is activate by A, how can i pass the handler to B? Currently i have a thread receive messages from socket, and dispatch messages to A and B, I think when B is activated, pass handler to B, then the handler can receive message from the thread. But I don't know how to do.

I have a Service that downloads a file from the internet. What I want is for the response (an InputStream in this case) to be handled by a custom handler that can be switched (like a strategy pattern) but I can't figure out how to do this. So basically the User of the API would be able to plug in different handlers for the response, some would parse XML, others might save files etc. I realise I could pass through the activity context and execute the method from this (given some interface) but I don't want to do this obviously, in case the Activity is closed in the meantime while the file is still downloaded.
UPDATE - I just had one idea it will work sort of but has problem if the DownloadRunnable gets changed between executions of the downloads.
The modified Runnable interface
interface DownloadRunnable {
void run(InputStream stream);
}
An enum
public enum ServiceHandler {.......................

I am coding a basic android application that has to call a web service, using KSOAP2, I am sending a request with one parameter (city) and need to get the response of the web service (basically a short String) from this site:
http://www.deeptraining.com/webservices/weather.asmx?op=GetWeather
When execultin the application, I only get a message: "This application has stopped unexpectedly". When debugging, I am getting the following error:
Thread [<3> main] (Suspended (exception VerifyError) And: ViewRoot.handleMessage(Message) line: 1198 that says: Source not Found And shows a button allowing to: Edit Source Lookup path. What does this basically mean?
My source code that generates the is the following:
private static final String SoapAction = "http://www.deeptraining.com/ webservices/GetWeather"; private static final String MethodName = "GetWeather"; private static final String Namespace = "http://www.deeptraining.com/ webservices/"; private static final String URL = "http://www.deeptraining.com/ webservices/weather.asmx";
And the main part of it: SoapObject request = new SoapObject(Namespace, MethodName); request.addProperty("City", cityname); SoapSerializationEnvelope envelope = new SoapSerializationEnvelope (SoapEnvelope.VER11); envelope.setOutputSoapObject(request); HttpTransport androidHttpTransport = new HttpTransport(URL); try { Result.setText("... Processing ..."); //error here: androidHttpTransport.call(SoapAction, envelope); ...
I am using Eclipse with Android plugin and KSOAP2 library.

In Virgil Dobjanschi's talk, "Developing Android REST client applications" (link here), he said a few things that took me by surprise. Including:
Don't run http queries in threads spawned by your activities. Instead, communicate with a service to do them, and store the information in a ContentProvider.
Use a ContentObserver to be notified of changes.
Always perform long running tasks in a Service, never in your Activity.
Stop your Service when you're done with it.
I understand that he was talking about a REST API, but I'm trying to make it fit with some other ideas I've had for apps. One of APIs I've been using uses long-polling for their chat interface. There is a loop http queries, most of which will time out. This means that, as long as the app hasn't been killed by the OS, or the user hasn't specifically turned off the chat feature, I'll never be done with the Service, and it will stay open forever. This seems less than optimal.
Long question short:
For a chat application that uses long polling to simulate push and immediate response, is it still best practice to use a Service to perform the HTTP queries, and store the information in a ContentProvider?

Our application will expose a Service that can be called by Activities in other people's applications.In many cases, the parent applications calling Activity may be paused before our Service completes. I am looking for the best way for a Service to communicate back to the calling Activity that may have been paused.These are the known options:
(1) Require calling Activities to have a registerReceiver() with a custom action and broadcast to that from our Service. The only way to secure this registerReceiver() is with a signature-based permission.As our Service communicates with any number of unknown 3rd party apps,we can't sign our Service's parent app with all these unknown certificates. These apps would therefore be exposing an unsecured registerReceiver() on their Activity. Would ideally like to avoid requiring this.
(2) Create a PendingIntent to send results back to the activity and give it to our Service. Our Service would send data to calling Activity's onActivityResult(). Each time the result is delivered, the calling Activity will go through onPause() and onResume() but this should be OK.
(3) The calling Activities could create a Handler. The Activity would then create a Messenger pointing to that Handler and send it to our service. Our Service can then use the Messenger to deliver our message back to the calling Activity.

My application has a background process which continuously waits on a socket for receiving messages and it should be started only once and at the time of application starting.Thus i want to do that background job in a service.
The service should not be started from the activity ,it should be started at the application starting.
How can i define the service,which will be started at the time of application starting?
If at all the service is started from activity.The activity can be destroyed and restarted.when this happens the service also be restarted .
