Is there a way to access the currently active window belonging to a different process from a background service and be allowed to modify some of its properties such as the transparency?

I have an activity called A, and on the selection of menu item 0, it spawns service B, which starts a runnable C in a new thread. I have a TextView in activity A, which I want to access in thread C.
I've tried making the TextView a public static field, but that generates the following error:...........................

Right now, there is no root or custom ROM on my device which I'm willing to change in favor of the above improvement.

When I load my application I also load and Android Service that helps me download files from the internet.The user may have 1 or more downloads at any given time, all in their own Thread which is managed by the service. If the user presses the home button I do not destroy the service but instead let it run, however, if the user presses the back button I do stop() the service as I felt this was the right thing to do (the user would not want stray services running).
This works OK unless there are stray Threads that have not completed yet (this could happen if the internet connection is not active etc.).How could I manage this? How could I stop all Threads as I have no reference to them...or somehow command android to stop my service once all Threads are complete and my app has closed?

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy program does some network activity in a background thread. Before starting, it pops up a progress dialog. The dialog is dismissed on the handler.This all works fine, except when screen orientation changes while the dialog is up (and the background thread is going). At this point the app either crashes, or deadlocks, or gets into a weird stage where the app does not work at all until all the threads have been killed.How can I handle the screen orientation change gracefully?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have issue with displaying AlertDialog from Service. I am able to display custom layout window using Toast or using WindowManager(TYPE_SYSTEM_ALERT or TYPE_SYSTEM_OVERLAY). But, I do not want to use custom layout, I prefer to use nice AlertDialog GUI directly.
Scenario:
Running Service. No active Activity present. On some external event, Service sends Notification
When user press Notification, Service is informed via PendingIntent and AlertDialog should be displayed (created with AlertDialog.Builder(this))
Error: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(1063): Caused by: android.view.WindowManager$BadTokenException: Unable to add window -- token null is not for an application. Searching for the answer lead me to impression that I am trying something that is currently not possible (Android 2.2). Or maybe it is.
I am trying to use my new Droid to connect to our Exchange 2003 email. I can access it just fine when I am on the companies Wi-Fi (both OWA and Active sync), but when I try to connect from the internet, I cannot see either. Odd thing is that if I use Opera Mini 5 Beta on my Droid, I can connect to OWA, but the default browser wont allow it. My Iphone is working fine on both networks, so I know the system is working properly.

As its just a background service it doesnt show up on the pane of installed apps. So there is no way for the user to manually start it. I've already regietered for the BOOT_COMPLETED intent which works but I dont want the user to have to power off the phone after the app has been installed, just so as they can start it.
I've looked at the following intents: ACTION_PACKAGE_ADDED/CHANGED/ REPLACED/RESTARTED/INSTALL, ACTION_SCREEN_ON/OFF, ACTION_USER_PRESENT, ACTION_TIME_TICK,
But it doesnt seem that you can register to listen for them from my manifest.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm writing an application that consists of a background Service and one or several Activities acting as UI towards this. There will most likely be several different UIs for this service that will installed later on, like custom widgets or UIs. The question is how to solve this in the most efficient way. Is it better to only use Intents for communication between UI and Service (sending control commands with Intents from the UI and listening for Intents from the Service for state and data updates) or should I prefer using IPC communication (AIDL -> Java Stub, binding to the service etc.)?
Since the UI might be started long after the service is started, I would either need to use sticky intents to signal current state, or have a very frequent intent sent by the service if choose to go with the Intent-based design. Which one would be the preferred way in that case? I've read that sticky intents are much more resource consuming than normal intents, but are intents more consuming than IPC directly towards the service? Also, is really an AIDL the right way to allow third-party integration? Intents sounds better, since they are also asynchronous.
I'd like to include a feature in my application that would include a running background service that would disable SMS, if certain conditions were met (location for instance). Is there a way I can intercept the user wanting to open any SMS app and block it? Would a Broadcast Receiver be able to do the trick? Maybe a different way to go about this?
