Android :: Basic Application Web Service Access - Source Not Found?
Feb 27, 2009
I am coding a basic android application that has to call a web service, using KSOAP2, I am sending a request with one parameter (city) and need to get the response of the web service (basically a short String) from this site:
http://www.deeptraining.com/webservices/weather.asmx?op=GetWeather
When execultin the application, I only get a message: "This application has stopped unexpectedly". When debugging, I am getting the following error:
Thread [<3> main] (Suspended (exception VerifyError) And: ViewRoot.handleMessage(Message) line: 1198 that says: Source not Found And shows a button allowing to: Edit Source Lookup path. What does this basically mean?
My source code that generates the is the following:
private static final String SoapAction = "http://www.deeptraining.com/ webservices/GetWeather"; private static final String MethodName = "GetWeather"; private static final String Namespace = "http://www.deeptraining.com/ webservices/"; private static final String URL = "http://www.deeptraining.com/ webservices/weather.asmx";
And the main part of it: SoapObject request = new SoapObject(Namespace, MethodName); request.addProperty("City", cityname); SoapSerializationEnvelope envelope = new SoapSerializationEnvelope (SoapEnvelope.VER11); envelope.setOutputSoapObject(request); HttpTransport androidHttpTransport = new HttpTransport(URL); try { Result.setText("... Processing ..."); //error here: androidHttpTransport.call(SoapAction, envelope); ...
I am using Eclipse with Android plugin and KSOAP2 library.

I downloaded the Android SDK and the Eclipse Plugin and installed them. When I however use the "Open Declaration" in Eclipse on basic Android functions and classes such as setOnClickListener or ListActivity it gives me an "Source not found"-Error.
The total Android source code seems to be 2.1 GB. Where do I get the source code of those functions that I call with the API to integrate it into Eclipse?

I defined a remote service over a AIDL file. Now i want to access this service in a different application. But how can I do that? The AIDL file is not accessible in my second application, and if i just copy the AIDL file, then the service can't be found.

I'm getting an error in my Android app that says "source not found" and crashes the program. I've already read a number of posts saying that the solution is to download the android source code and load that up in Eclipse, but I tried to no avail. Here is a bunch of information that may help with my problem, let me know if you need more!
Stack:
Thread [<1> main] (Suspended (exception RuntimeException))
ActivityThread.performLaunchActivity(ActivityThrea d$ActivityRecord, Intent) line: 2663
ActivityThread.handleLaunchActivity(ActivityThread $ActivityRecord, Intent) line: 2679
ActivityThread.access$2300(ActivityThread, ActivityThread$ActivityRecord, Intent) line: 125
ActivityThread$H.handleMessage(Message) line: 2033
ActivityThread$H(Handler).dispatchMessage(Message) line: 99
Looper.loop() line: 123
ActivityThread.main(String[]) line: 4627
Method.invokeNative(Object, Object[], Class, Class[], Class, int, boolean) line: not available [native method]
Method.invoke(Object, Object...) line: 521
ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run() line: 868
ZygoteInit.main(String[]) line: 626
NativeStart.main(String[]) line: not available [native method]
Is it weird that the first entry is 'ActivityThrea d' with the 'd' cut off? If this is the problem, what went wrong and how do I fix it? The line of code the debug stops on:
public void AddAnimationID(String index, Integer view)
{ animations.put(index, view);
}
'animations' is a Dictionary and is a member of class Alien. I am calling it like:
Alien alien;
alien.AddAnimationID("idle", R.drawable.idle);
I am correct in thinking that R.drawable.idle is an int right? findViewByID takes an int for the argument. Here is the logcat, I tried to pinpoint where in the log it started the application, sorry if its too much.

I am using Eclipse on Windows 7 x64. I have all of the newest updates to the android SDK and I downloaded the android source code and added it to the Eclipse patch because previous posts led me to try that. The code breaks for debug when the first time AddAnimationID is called. Looks like I didn't have enough breakpoints, the culprit is not the AddAnimationID function but actually the SetImageView one. The if statement seems to not work, so I've commented it out for now. I'll post back once I've figured it out. It's probably something silly that works in another language but not Java.

Problem 1.
I have this class:
public class ContactGroups {
// Form an array specifying which columns to return.
String[] projection = new String[] { Contacts.Groups._ID,
Contacts.Groups._COUNT, Contacts.Groups.NAME, Contacts.Groups.NOTES };
public Cursor getList(Activity act) {
Uri contacts = Contacts.Groups.CONTENT_URI;
// using the debugger code kills here
Cursor managedCursor = act.managedQuery(contacts, projection,
null, null, null );
return managedCursor;
} public ArrayList<String> getColumnData(Cursor cur) { ArrayList<String> aa = new ArrayList<String>();
if (cur.moveToFirst()) { String name;
String notes;
int nameColumn = cur.getColumnIndex(Contacts.Groups.NAME);
int notesColumn = cur.getColumnIndex(Contacts.Groups.NOTES);
do {
// Get the field values name = cur.getString(nameColumn);
notes = cur.getString(notesColumn);
aa.add(name);
// Do something with the values. } while (cur.moveToNext())
} return aa;
} }
I am calling this as:
ContactGroups mGrp= new ContactGroups();
final ArrayAdapter<String> aa;
aa = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1,mGrp.getColumnData(mGrp.getList(this)));
myListView.setAdapter(aa);
And having:
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.READ_CONTACTS"></uses-permission>
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.WRITE_CONTACTS"></uses-permission>
I get a Source not found error and a Logcat error
ERROR/DatabaseUtils(617): java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid column _count
Problem 2.
Where do I create manually contact groups?

I am pretty new to Android, the thing that bugs me the most about the IDE is that I am not able to get any information about an unexpected exception when it gets thrown, I can put a try catch block around identified code that generates it, but in many cases it takes time to find the line of code that generates the exception. is there any other way I can get the exception information? in JDT when an unexpected exception is thrown the call stack displays the exception class name. but in ADT this doesn't work.

I'm trying to do basic authentication to view a protected url. I want to access the protected url which looks like this:
http://api.test.com/userinfo/vid?=1234. So I do the following with a WebView:
mWebView.setHttpAuthUsernamePassword("api.test.com", "", "me@test.com", "my password");
mWebView.loadUrl("http://api.test.com/userinfo/user?uid=53461");
but the authentication doesn't seem to work, I'm just getting an output error page. Am I using the WebView method correctly here?
Update:
Trying with curl: curl -u me@test.com:mypassword http://api.test.com/userinfo/user?uid=53461
and it pulls the page fine. I tried every combination of the host parameter, the owners of the api don't know what I mean by 'realm' though (and neither do I) - what info could I give them to help this along?

I am a complete novice to the field of Android applications. I want to build a basic Android application of an "website alert and post service".
Eg: Lets take FACEBOOK or TWITTER as the website.The application which I design should intimate me about the new posts or tweets of my friends. At the same time I must be able to post or tweet just by opening a text box in the application and writing in it. As soon as I write, the message should get posted or tweeted on the website.
I am not sure about the complexity of the above application but I feel this would reduce the trouble of opening a browser, typing the website name and then logging in by putting the username and password.

First and foremost, are there many android developers here? Is this a good place for Android related discussions?I seem to be missing a rather large concept of Android development. The gist is I am struggling understanding how to tie an application together. I'm not sure how to explain it, so I thought I would do my best with an example from the Android ApiDemo... assuming you are familiar with it.
Inside the com.example.android.apis.view namespace of the ApiDemo, there is a class called Animation3.java.Animation3 inherits the activity class and there is some code inside to display animation.I can't find a reference to the class (Animation3) anywhere in the demo code (except for its definition obviously). The only mention I found is in the manifest xml file. So how the heck does this activity get started? Don't we need to create an instance of the class somewhere and fire off a method to start it? I don't understand how to generate the code that ultimately glues this class to the rest of the application.Additionally, what about other classes like views or viewgroups? How do I generate code outside the class that initiates/starts/uses/calls (insert proper term) the class.I would appreciate any code examples as well as any concept explanation or reference documents. So far I've read pages and pages on activities and views but I'm really struggling how to tie things together.

I have searched all over the internet, but I couldnt find any app that allows me to sync my Lotus Notes calender with my HTC Magic. All I have found are applications that sync Lotus Notes over Google Calender. It's serious company security guideline offense, and I sure as hell do not want my corporate data to be uploaded to a 3rd party server. I cannot believe that there is no app. ( now when the 2nd generation Android phones are starting to emerge) that can sync via USB, without resorting to Google Calendar.
This is a serious issue for me, and I am sure for other business users aswell, that do not want their company data to be uploaded to Google. I am very well aware that Lotus/Domino is not as popular as Outlook/Exchange, but alas, I have no choice, since it's my companies messaging platform of choice. Am I missing out on something? Can anyone point me towards an app that I have perhaps omitted?
Just give me my USB-sync back!

For all of you android devs out there that have the Android simulator running on your computer, you know that there are a few built in apps that are already installed on your 'phone'. I had an idea for an app that would utilize a function that is already being done in the spare parts app that comes already installed. I went on to the android developer site, dug through the source code files, and found the spare parts app, and am now trying to set it up so that running it from eclipse on my machine actually runs the app in the simulator.
In other words, I want to be able to make changes to and adjust some of the things in that app for my own needs. But it won't compile, because of a number of different errors. How do I get that source code running on my local machine? Is there some special trick that I just don't know about? I thought that if I could get the source code than the rest would be easy, but it isn't being too easy.

I'm passing in parameters and returning string values, but all I receive is: org.apache.http.conn.EofSensorInputStream. Do I need to do something special in my web service to access the parameters being passed?
