HTC Desire :: Wireless Hotspot Feature Works Without Data Plan

Oct 2, 2010

I purchased a HTC Desire a few days ago and I think it's great. However, there is one thing that bothers me. I've been quite slow at joining the smartphone community, primarily due to all the reports/stories of high phonebills relating to internet usage. So, having got my hands on the phone its self - I thought I'd play with it for a while and stick to using my home wifi connection for downloading apps and playing with map applications etc.

The phone came pre-installed with Android 2.2 and therefore has this wireless hotspot app built in. So, to see how it worked, I enabled the feature and connected to the phone from my laptop.

My first surprise was that it worked. My laptop was connected to the phone and web pages were loading up on it. Realising that my phone was already set up to connect to my wireless router for internet access though, I figured that it was probably sharing that connection with my laptop. Well, at least that's what I was hoping...

At this point I unplugged my home modem/router and tried again. Fully expecting my laptop to complain about the lack of internet connectivity, I was quite shocked to find that web pages were loading up on my laptop and there's now a '3G' logo (with flashing up/down arrows) showing on the top status bar of the phone.

From what I've said here, my only conclusion is that my phone is transferring data over the mobile phone network, but considering that I don't have a data plan, how can this be? If I disable the hotspot feature (with my home router switched off), my phone cannot access the internet, but if I enable the wireless hotspot feature of the phone and connect to it - my laptop can.

My SIM card is from Tchibo Germany (o2 network).

I am also wondering, I have read several threads on people rooting their phone back one version to the 2.05 I think it was. Why would you do that? I thought I read there is a 2.1 working root correct?

I have an unlocked captivate. I have a German T-D1 pay-as-you-go sim that I've used many times in unlocked GPS phones. Now I have an AT&T captivate and wonder whether GPS or other apps will work. Does GPS require a data plan to work? If so I'll have to figure out whetted I can add this to my T-D1 plan. This will also answer my question about whether using the Captivate for navigation in the US needs a data plan to work.

Motorola Droid :: Verizon Deletes Hotspot Feature

Aug 3, 2010

Verizon Wireless promised to deliver the Android 2.2 Froyo update to the Motorola Droid starting "this week." The update hasn't started rolling out yet, but InformationWeek has already learned some disappointing news about it.According to Verizon Wireless, two of the biggest features being introduced by Android 2.2 Froyo won't be included in the Droid update: tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot creation. It is possible that Verizon Wireless is purposely leaving these features out of the Droid to entice customers to buy the Droid X (which offers hotspot creation) or the unannounced but imminent Droid 2.

HTC EVO 4G :: Wireless Hotspot And Rooting

May 17, 2010

I've seen a lot of scattered comments about this subject, but it all seems inconsistent. I would absolutely love to have my phone be a wireless hotspot for my computer. However, I'd like to do this without being charged from sprint. Now I know this is obviously something sprint wouldn't want their customers to do so I have two main questions:

1) Do you absolutely have to root your phone for it to be able to act as a hotspot for free?

2) If so, what would be the negative effects of rooting your phone. I'm assuming it would void warranty. Anything else?

HTC Incredible :: Wireless 3G Hotspot

Sep 30, 2010

I just got a WiFi IPad so i'm wanting to wireless tether. I already had PDNet for my notebook but of course thats not going to work for the IPad. I looked at the 3G Hotspot feature on the incredible and of course i tried it just to see if it would work and it doesn't. You just get a verizon page when you try to browse the web. I know in the past you had to root to be able to tether wirelessly. With Froyo does that still hold true or is there some type of app you can download off the android marketplace? I don't know if i'm big on rooting my phone. Verizon i think will charge $20 for the convenience right?

HTC Incredible :: Wifi Hotspot Vs Wireless Tethering

Sep 19, 2010

I recently rooted my Incredible and installed Cyanogen 6.00 RC3. I liked some things about it but missed some of the stock HTC widgets and apps. The Cyanogen rom had wifi hot spot, and it worked great. I could connect more than one computer to it, as it acted like a Hotspot.

Today i reflashed to Virtuous 2.7 Rom, which is alot like the stock 2.2. I got back the things I missed in Cyanogen but no wifi hotspot. Instead, there is "Wireless Tethering" which doesn't seem to work. The latest version is installed, version 2.0.5-pre9. Neither of my computers can "see" the connection.

Is there any way I can get the wifi hot spot app that was in Cyanogen and install it on my phone with the Virtuous 2.7 Rom? wireless tethering really doesn't do what I want it to.

HTC EVO 4G :: Thinking Of Rooting / Difference Between Wireless Tether And Hotspot?

Nov 9, 2010

I mainly love my Evo just the way it is, with only 1 drawback. I hate having to reconnect each time i unplug my phn from my laptop at work using easytether or pdanet. So like many others, i want wireless tethering w/o a $30 monthly fee. I've been reading up on root posts (mainly unrevoked), and have noticed it mentioned that some ROM's have a "wireless tether" or "hotspot" built in. What's the difference in the two, arent they the same? I see "Wireless Tether" in the market for root users, isn't that the same as the "hotspot" feature or am i missing something? It'd be pretty nifty to utilize my phn as a hotspot for 2-3 others in my office to connect to when needed as well.I don't really care to flash a custom ROM, as i'm content in the configuration i already have, but i would like to get rid of the bloatware and have it "frozen" so to speak. Does this have any improvement on battery life? I typically get about 15+/- hrs a day as is before i have to charge back up, and don't want to chance ruining that by trying a custom kernel/ROM that may/may not tweak the battery life. I've read too many mixed reviews to feel it's justified, so i mainly want to kill off "zone", "stocks", "navigation", "people", etc etc that run without me needing it. Does it help battery life to only freeze the bloatware with Titanium Backup and then just redo my current launcher pro screens/settings?

Motorola Droid :: Wireless Tether - Mobile Hotspot

Sep 9, 2010

I feel like I have done enough reading on knowing how to preform the root on my phone, but I am just curious as to how I get different features like wireless tether, or any tether for that matter, without having to download easytether or PDAnet. Is hot spot even available on our phones?

Do custom kernels have these features built in? If so, what is a good kernel to use with OMJ's post on rooting the droid without RSDlite?

I really just want my phone to act like it acts and look like it looks now, just have additional features and maybe overclock it a bit.

Motorola Droid :: Wireless Hotspot On Froyo W/o Custom Rom

Aug 7, 2010

I have a Droid running the recent Froyo update. I'm wondering if there is a way to root my phone and do something (install an app?) that will allow me to use the phone as a wifi hotspot without installing a custom rom? I'm not a super adventurous user (mostly concerned about speed/stability); I would just like to utilize this feature if possible.

If it isn't possible to do this without installing a custom rom, is there a rom available that makes minimal changes to the standard OS just to enable a few missing features like tethering and wifi hotspot?
