I purchased a HTC Desire a few days ago and I think it's great. However, there is one thing that bothers me. I've been quite slow at joining the smartphone community, primarily due to all the reports/stories of high phonebills relating to internet usage. So, having got my hands on the phone its self - I thought I'd play with it for a while and stick to using my home wifi connection for downloading apps and playing with map applications etc.
The phone came pre-installed with Android 2.2 and therefore has this wireless hotspot app built in. So, to see how it worked, I enabled the feature and connected to the phone from my laptop.
My first surprise was that it worked. My laptop was connected to the phone and web pages were loading up on it. Realising that my phone was already set up to connect to my wireless router for internet access though, I figured that it was probably sharing that connection with my laptop. Well, at least that's what I was hoping...
At this point I unplugged my home modem/router and tried again. Fully expecting my laptop to complain about the lack of internet connectivity, I was quite shocked to find that web pages were loading up on my laptop and there's now a '3G' logo (with flashing up/down arrows) showing on the top status bar of the phone.
From what I've said here, my only conclusion is that my phone is transferring data over the mobile phone network, but considering that I don't have a data plan, how can this be? If I disable the hotspot feature (with my home router switched off), my phone cannot access the internet, but if I enable the wireless hotspot feature of the phone and connect to it - my laptop can.
My SIM card is from Tchibo Germany (o2 network).
I was wondering if anyone was able to get their T-Mobile/Motorola Cliq to work on T-Mobile's basic data plan? They now have a specific Android data plan. I can't believe that they raised the data and unlimited text message plan to cost $45/mo. in total for Android phones! I'm using the $19.99 unlimited data/messaging plan now and would like to continue to use it. If anyone has successfully done this, please let me know how you did it.

I heard the update refreshed it somehow so I was just glancing around and decided to take a look. well after going through some settings it started, I immediately closed the app afraid I had charged 20 dollars but I am wandering if it still costs if they got rid of the notification that it costs, I thought you had to subscribe to it before you ran it so does that mean it's free now?
View 2 Replies View RelatedAlright, so I recently purchased the droid and I am looking to put in on Boost CDMA for their unlimited plan.I can pull the PRL off of a boost phone that I am using right now (I think) and have an esn of an old boost phone can I can use for a switch so it is recognized in the database. I own both phones so I don't see any issue with this. My question is; is rooting the phone necessary for this to work. I would think so, but I am not sure. I have seen people flash the droid over to cricket, virgin, page plus, metro pcs, so why not boost mobile? I am just looking for some feedback from people more knowledgeable than me. This is my first android phone, so I am quite ignorant in all things android. I flashed an HTC TP2 over to boost, so I am hoping I can do the same with the droid.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI turn the thing on so that I can connect my computer to the internet then upon turning it off, my phone wont send emails thru my yahoo account or sometimes it wont send them thru my yahoo or my exchange email. They just sit in my outbox. Then I can't open them again to save them to be sent later, I only have the option of deleting them. I pull out my battery and then most of the time its all better but I shouldnt have to be doing this. I am starting to have flashbacks of my Blackberry Storm and pulling the battery every 10 minutes. Is hot spot even available on our phones?
Do custom kernels have these features built in? If so, what is a good kernel to use with OMJ's post on rooting the droid without RSDlite?
I really just want my phone to act like it acts and look like it looks now, just have additional features and maybe overclock it a bit.

Is there any advantage to using one over the other (obviously I use the data plan when wifi isn't available)? The data plan is one monthly fee that I had to pay anyway, but I didn't know if there was something I was missing?

Granted Verizon reps aren't always the most knowledgeable so take this for what it's worth.I asked about the data plan and she confirmed that it's the Air cards that are limited to 5GB. Currently there's no limit for phones. I then asked about tethering. She told me that since the Droid doesn't do tethering there are no limits. I inquired about third party apps that provide tethering and she responded saying that because those apps are not provided by Verizon they are not considered tethering, rather falling under the data category and are therefore unlimited.

I have removed the news and weather widgets from my home screen and turned off "data enabled" and "background data" in settings/data delivery. I am around wifi all day so I can enable that if I want to download an app.Is there anything else anyone can recommend or will that stop the majority of back and forth data transfer from the phone?

I am also wondering, I have read several threads on people rooting their phone back one version to the 2.05 I think it was. Why would you do that? I thought I read there is a 2.1 working root correct?
I have a 4G Sonic T-mobile hotspot (hockey puck type of device) working fine tethered to my Desktop, working via Wifi to my laptop and my iPad. No issues there. I also have an original Moto Droid on the VZW network, rooted, but no mods.
The Droid connects via Wifi to my Home Network (a Linksys Wifi Router), and other WiFi networks when I'm on the road. However I can't get it to connect to the T-Mobile 4G Hotspot. I know that's crazy, thinking I might get 4g internet speed out of an old original Droid, but technically it should work right?
Basically the Droid sees the hotspot, connects for a split second then gets dropped/disconnected. Or it's a settings issue and despite trying a million different settings.
I'm wondering if there's something in either device, or perhaps both, that recognizes one is a VZW device, the other a T-Mobile device, and it keeps me from making the connection. what might be keeping these two devices from connecting?

I've installed Froyo on a T-Mobile branded Desire. After the update, turning on USB tethering leads to immediate loss of mobile network - it just turns itself off. Same goes for the mobile Wifi hotspot: turn on -> for 2 seconds, it's working -> mobile network drops off. Moving into airplane mode and back brings back the network, but tethering is a goner. With 2.1, USB tethering had worked. I'm on Base, a brand of e-plus. I've talked to their customer services, they say Base absolutely supports tethering.
Well i just bought a cliq retail price and will be arriving next week and i am not getting th data plan because everywhere i go theres wifi and dont see the need to get a data plan has someone have the cliq without the data plan? if so how is it? do mms work?

I did a small search around the internet, and it came up with just about nothing.My first question is: I turned mobile data off, and yet, during the night, I was charged for data, so something leaked.Personally, I thought if this was because of this particular function. View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having a strange problem with the Sprint mobile hotspot. When I am in a 4G area, my phone picks up and uses 4G with no problem. However, the instant I turn on the mobile hotspot, the 4G connection drops, and the phone reverts to 3G. The moment I turn off the hotspot, the phone goes back to 4G. If I turn the hotspot on/off from the Wireless & networks settings page, I can see that the instant the hotspot finishes initializing, the 4G line goes to "disconnected." It then goes to scanning and then sits at "obtaining IP address" for several seconds, at which point it starts that cycle over again. It goes through this cycle repeatedly until I turn off the hotspot, never getting past the "obtaining IP address" stage.I called Sprint tech support, and the best they came up with was to do a hard reset and see if that resolved the issue. Before I do that, I would like to see if anyone here has any idea what might cause this issue and how to resolve it short of a hard reset. I am running the official OTA froyo OS version. The update was pushed out the day after I got my Evo, so I do not know if this issue existed in 2.1.
