HTC Desire :: Wireless Hotspot Feature Works Without Data Plan

Oct 2, 2010

I purchased a HTC Desire a few days ago and I think it's great. However, there is one thing that bothers me. I've been quite slow at joining the smartphone community, primarily due to all the reports/stories of high phonebills relating to internet usage. So, having got my hands on the phone its self - I thought I'd play with it for a while and stick to using my home wifi connection for downloading apps and playing with map applications etc.

The phone came pre-installed with Android 2.2 and therefore has this wireless hotspot app built in. So, to see how it worked, I enabled the feature and connected to the phone from my laptop.

My first surprise was that it worked. My laptop was connected to the phone and web pages were loading up on it. Realising that my phone was already set up to connect to my wireless router for internet access though, I figured that it was probably sharing that connection with my laptop. Well, at least that's what I was hoping...

At this point I unplugged my home modem/router and tried again. Fully expecting my laptop to complain about the lack of internet connectivity, I was quite shocked to find that web pages were loading up on my laptop and there's now a '3G' logo (with flashing up/down arrows) showing on the top status bar of the phone.

From what I've said here, my only conclusion is that my phone is transferring data over the mobile phone network, but considering that I don't have a data plan, how can this be? If I disable the hotspot feature (with my home router switched off), my phone cannot access the internet, but if I enable the wireless hotspot feature of the phone and connect to it - my laptop can.

My SIM card is from Tchibo Germany (o2 network).

HTC EVO 4G :: EVO 4G Data Only Plan?

May 1, 2010

I'm currently an iphone 3gs user and i've been hearing more and more about the evo that makes me love it. i'm an avid google user and i don't like how apple neuters their phone to google, or just about anything else to be honest. i've had to jailbreak just to get functionality that should come standard. I like that android obviously caters to google products and a small amount of research shows me that i can do everything i want with a droid device that i currently do with an iphone. on to my question...i could justify switching out of my current contract, but only on a monthly plan. my thought process is i could use a 4g device with google voip for calls. do you think sprint would sell data only plans to the phone?

HTC EVO 4G :: Can Get EVO Without A Data Plan

Jun 4, 2010

I don't want a data plan. I waited in line at the Sprint store for an hour and a half this morning before being told that i must have a data plan to buy the phone, and there are no current plans to sell it unlocked. I have wireless 95% of where I go. Dataplans cost more than all of my utilities combined. I cannot believe these criminals won't let me buy an unsubsidized EVO and use it as a normal phone.

HTC Incredible :: Data Plan

currently have the lg voyager with $10 vcast and $15 internet data plan. ordered the incredible from best buy and will be activating from home. do i have to call up and cancel these both before activating my incredible and will the data plan be automatically implemented since its required? im guessing its to much to ask to just cancel the vcast and see if the internet charge carries over at $15 instead of $30. either way it will be worth it to get rid of this brick of a phone.

Samsung Fascinate :: Using SF Without A Data Plan

Oct 1, 2010

since launch day, Sept. 9. Just a heads up for anyone upgrading or opening up a new account to a smart phone. It's up to you, but you just might want to ask and confirm at the Point of Sale if you are indeed on the unlimited data plan.

Received an interesting text msg from Verizon. Turns out my balance is $494.90. Evidently, I've never had a data plan and I've been getting charged for every single Mb.

*611 and CS immediately recognized what happened. I was never put on a data plan at the POS. It's as simple and complicated as that. $340 in data charges. She put me on the $30 unlimited data and credited me the data charges minus the $30 I would've paid this billing cycle.

No big deal except the long wait time over the phone and for some reason it took her another five minutes to do whatever was needed to fix it. Also, it has to be "cleared" first because "of the size of the credit". She'll call me back Sunday(she's off Friday and Saturday... good for her) after 1pm to confirm and tell me it went through.

Samsung Galaxy S :: Using The GPS Without A Data Plan

Nov 20, 2010

(We'll see if this gets any votes for dumb question of the week.)I don't have a data plan, nor do I want one. I knew the GPS was problematic on the Galaxy S when I bought it, but I didn't really foresee much GPS use. I'm curious to play with it, but don't know how much I'll actually need it.Am I right in assuming that the basic GPS is separate from 3G in that I can use it to find my location? I understand that overlaying my location on Google Maps needs 3G (unless I'm using WiFi). However, is it also possible to overlay my location on off-line, cached maps like those in MapDroyd and Maps (-)?Also, what privileges/settings do I need for the GPS to communicate with these maps and show my location?

Android :: Nexus One With No Data Plan?

Mar 26, 2010

I've tried searching for an answer to this in the forums but I can't find someone who has already asked it.In any case I'm wondering whether its possible to use a Nexus One without a data plan. I have access to wifi pretty much everywhere I would use my device and thus a data plan really is not worthwhile for the cost. That being said I know that for other android devices, the very first time they're turned on, the user is required to connect to their Gmail account via data. Would I run into a similar situation with the Nexus One? Is it possible to use the device from the get go without any data? Do any of the primary apps(besides google maps obviously) absolutely require data to be used?

Android :: T-Mobie G1 - MMS Without Data Plan

Jan 26, 2010

We bought a G1 off of a 3rd Party Carrier (brand new), and activated it via Wifi.Tmobile was able to recognize it when we put the sim card in.(the picture of the phone appeared when we went to account settings within the tmobile website). So basically, we have an unlimited text and messaging plan. and NO data plan.
The internet works fine on the phone when using wifi. However, we are having issues with picture messaging. We receive the text message + picture attached, however, the g1 will not let us download it. I have looked around and seen workarounds for this error. One method was to forward the text to an email and download it from there. However, we could not get this to work.SO my question is,What (if any), is the most up-to-date method to get MMS over Wifi without a data plan.

HTC Incredible :: Data Plan Difference

Apr 18, 2010

So after reading some other questions on here, I'm still kind of confused about the point of buying the $45 vs. the $30 data plan. What's the benefit of the more expensive one? From what I had understood in the past is that the $45 is if you want your exchange account pushed and synced, which I thought implied that you did not get those exchange features on the $30 plan. One of the big needs I have is that I can get my college e-mails, on an exchange server, pushed/synced to/on my phone.

HTC Incredible :: Data Plan - Top Priority

Jun 20, 2010

Remember when choosing your minutes was the single most important thing on your cell plan? Then slowly, texting options became more important? Now, with smartphones everywhere, I see the Data Plan as the most important option. As for me, when I see the incredible, I see so much more than just a phone. For me, the phone part seems more like a tacked on feature in that the device is so much more capable than a mere phone. With its constant connection to the internet and its ability to run apps ranging from anything to everything you can imagine, the Incredible seems to fully capture the term 'Personal Computer'. Of course, having minutes to talk on your phone is important, but is that slowly becoming less and less a priority? With the availability of Skype and other VoIP services, could cell phone plan minutes be a thing of the past in the not to distant future?

I'm a noob and this is my first phone with a data plan. I installed 3G watchdog and I see the usage going up even though I haven't done anything through the 3g network. I've done my app downloads and surfing via Wi-Fi and as the phone sits idle the usage creeps up ever so slightly. Is this from the phone updating and considered normal? The usage is about 1mb per day so after a month that's 30mb. Is something running in the background that shouldn't be and if so how do I find it?

So I was about to pick up a Captivate today until I spoke with the sales rep about my data plan. I am still using the 1st gen iPhone with the unlimited edge plan. He told me that there was no way for me to use the Captivate with the old plan unless I upgrade to the new ones.

I remember reading online awhile back that used the upgrade path from the 1st iPhone to any of the 3g iPhones, which makes it sound like he is BS'ing. I don't know if it still holds true for the Captivate though.

Android :: Pda Net And Sprint's Unlimited Data Plan

Feb 5, 2010

I'm new to AF, but I've been lurking here for about 2 months. Did my homework and ended up buying the Samsung Moment and Samsung Exclaim for my girlfriend and I with a new Sprint contract. We're both thoroughly pleased with our phones and our plan. But I do have a question that I haven't seen addressed here. I jumped through all the hoops and was finally able to install PdaNet 2.17 on both my computer and phone. I tested it a little after getting it connected and was pretty well pleased with the performance of both the phone and the software. However, I will not be tethering my phone again until I can find out whether or not Sprint will bill me for it.As far as what I can tell from online sources the data plan truly is unlimited and Sprint cannot tell for a fact if my phone is tethered or not, although the bandwidth usage will be significantly higher during tethering sessions. BUT, a friend of mine informed me that Sprint knows when you're tethering and will charge you as if it is a separate line or however they can. All I heard was that it would cost me.I'm sorry for the long post, but I included the details for clarity's sake and as an insight into the kind of posts the AF community can expect from it's friendly neighborhood HampMan. Any input to the subject matter will be greatly appreciated and I thank you all in advance.

Samsung Fascinate :: Does AIM App Use Data Plan Or Texts?

The AIM app seems to be exactly what I'm looking for.My question is, I have unlimited data, but only 500 texts per month. When conversing with someone on facebook on the AIM app, would that be free or is it charging me a text per message? On a side note, I would also like to be able to send texts to a friend in Europe, but texts don't seem to make it there from the US. I just found this article about sending free texts through AIM, but it's two years old and related to iPhone:Send Free SMS Messages Using the AIM iPhone App.Anyone know if this will work on Android and be free on my end?
