Sprint HTC Hero :: Installed Last.fm - Slow Performance / Won't Boot
Oct 26, 2010
I'm rooted running CM6, have been for awhile. I was just recently installing last.fm and I guess I pressed something that caused my phone to slow way down, pretty much froze up, so I rebooted it. It booted all the way up and then rebooted itself again and now it won't go passed the white htc screen.

Just curious about Android OS Auto-Rotation system, and how it matches up to competitors. Before anything I am NOT complaining, just a thought.
So everyone has seen how the Auto-Rotation is on iPhone, Palm Pre' and Android handsets, and I was curious... shouldnt Android phones be able to do this task just as smooth as iPhone and Palm Pre'? Bringing this to my thought was the app "Floating Image". The Auto-Rotation on the app is amazing, and that just shows me, and makes me wonder, why cant all the other apps have the AR as smooth as this? (Even the keyboard). The slow delaying fade away is kind of a drawback (to an extent) know that Im 100% Android is capable of doing over and beyond that.

I've read a few "pre-reviews" of 2.1 and have yet to see any comments on better performance as it relates to syncing w/ Exchange Servers.Can anyone who has 2.1 loaded, that also uses an Exchange Server, comment on performance? I know that with 1.5, even though the settings are dictating the phone to sync upon arrival, there are times where it hasn't synced for more than a day.Just curious to see if this has been improved.

So apparently there is a new software update out that fixes the lag and boosts performance overall. I'm willing to bet that just like the last .6 update, this will probably break root.

I have seen some threads and articles on a few sites talking about the advantages of a better than stock mSD card for the Hero having a drastic effect on its performance. I have see others stating that a Class 4 or even Class 6 card on the Euro HTC Hero has improved performance by 400%. Now while I know "400%" is a little out there and even sounds exaggerated, I am curious what this group of people has seen or heard. Does a better MicroSD card improve overall performance?

I'm hoping to get a little insight here from the members of the community that have devices that are not rooted, or from members that have experience prior to their rooting. Before I go into my questioning, I do want to preface this by stating that I have considered rooting my phone in the past, and have even tried (but failed) using the PreKitchen. Since then, I have made a definite decision that I will not be rooting my device. I have done TONS of research and reading on the topic, have asked and have had answered a lot of questions, and I've just decided that I do not want to do it. Yes, I understand the pros of doing it, I just choose not to. That being said, I would respectfully ask that those who take the time to respond to this post, please don't suggest rooting.
Ok, so I've owned the Hero since October, and for the most part, it has performed only marginally. The quirks, odditys and under performance issues I have experienced are nothing different from what has been talked about on this board, or others. Some issues, however, have been persistently bad, even after the "typical" troubleshooting methods have been used. Additionally, some of the things I've seen my device do haven't been talked about, or at least not in great detail, by many people. Some of the issues that I am experiencing, I am hoping that 2.1 will cure, however, I've come to a breaking point where I don't want to wait it out for the upgrade to finally release, only to find out that it didn't help. I've talked to Sprint Advanced Tech Support a few times and they seem to believe that it's a faulty device. Whether or not that is their response because they are stumped, or if the device actually IS faulty is what I'm hoping to figure out. They have agreed to send a replacement device to me, so I'm trying to get a feel for what to expect. Below are some of the issues I'm experiencing:
1. Wifi will not stay connected 85% of the time, despite a strong signal.
2. Apps take quite a bit of time to respond. The phone, however, does not seem to lag all that much. Screens respond pretty quickly and swiping is pretty smooth. Apps just take quite a bit of time to open/respond, even if still in "running" mode in the background.
3. Browser and other data requesting apps take quite a bit of time to get data, despite a strong EVDO signal or strong Wifi signal.
4. The phone's antenna seems to be weak. I can barely get a signal in my office (a one story building, sitting close to a window) and I'm in a heavily populated city. I've never had a hard time getting any less than 3 bars on any other Sprint phone in this location. Additionally, in areas where reception should be strong, I've found my phone switching between 1x and EVDO for data, and Roaming for voice.
There are other miscellaneous issues as well. I also want to stress that all of the typical troubleshooting methods have been done. I hard reset the phone last week and cleaned house, and am still seeing these issues. Prior to hard resetting, I had around 25-30 MB of free space on the phone. After the hard reset, I'm around 75 MB of free space, so that doesn't seem to be an issue. Text messages are cleared off the phone as they come in and program caches are cleared out daily. As for the signal issues, that's something I can't figure out, and neither can Sprint Tech Support, which is why I'm getting the replacement. My questions to the community are these:
1. I know that some of the issues I have listed are common among Hero users, however, does troubleshooting (clearing caches, texts, etc) solve the issues, or do they persist?
2. Has anyone had signal/data speed issues?
3. For people who have had replacement devices for issues similar to these, did the new device work better, or is this just a function of the device? One of the main reasons I ask these questions is because if this is going to continue to be an issue from device to device, there is no need to waste time continually swapping phones. I think at that point, I'll just have to wait for 2.1, hope it resolves the issues, and if not, cross that bridge at that time. I've expressed concern to the Sprint reps about receiving a refurb device. They had stated that it isn't up to them what gets shipped, however, they did advise that if a refurb was shipped, to send it back and go to a repair center to return it (in hopes that they have new phones on hand). I'm truly hoping that this is an issue with my device and not the Hero itself.

Just got my N1 upgraded to unlimited web use through 3. Had to set up the APN. Did that in work and looked forward to `consuming` on the train journey home.
How cheesed off was I when I got diddly squat in the way of speed and function from the network?!
Endomondo - did not work, no maps
Google maps - never registered my position
Web - realllly slow to load anything
GPS tester - only found one or 2 satellites nd never made proper contact
Anyone else got an N1 with Three? Performace pants? Any other networks just as bad?

I just installed the latest version of Eclipse IDE for Java Developers together with the ADT plugin on my Mac (2.8 GHz, 4 GB Ram).
- Opening new files from the package explorer.
For example, opening a layout xml file takes 1-2sec- And the mouse pointer changes.
- Switching between tabs
- Resizing views in the workspace
The performance rapidly decreases when I open more files. Are all of you developing under these circumstances? How can I speed up eclipse?

my app downloads a zip with about 350 files. A mix of JPG and HTML files. The function i wrote to do it works just fine but the unzipping takes for ever. At first i thought the reason might be that writing to the sd-card is slow. but when i unzip the same zip with an other app on my phone it works much faster. is there anything that i could do to optimize it?
here is the code:.................

I am facing the following problem: I have a big list of street names(~2000 entries), which is stored as a variable. I have an AutoCompleteTextView which should complete the names. The process takes really long time(approx. 2 - 3 seconds) to complete the suggestion. Is there any way to speed this up? I am pasting my code, if this is necessary:The getStreetsData() method simply returns the static list of the names.

A while back I mentioned that running the imported p2p codebase I have on the emulator (on a fairly powerful laptop with plenty of mem and a fast processor) was pretty slow. I blamed all that on the codebase and in fact I was able to profile it and make it much lighter. Well still the overall app performance is slow --- and I am finding that most apps I run on the emulator are fairly slow. Is this a common trend? I do expect emulators, who are by no means a real device, to have such processing delays but are they in general this slow? Any metrics or any other feedback from anyone that depict the factor of slowdowns you would expect on an emulator vs the real device? I know a lot of this are machine dependent as well but consider an idle powerful machine. And regarding memory - I am loading Eclipse with close to 1G to be able to run the emulator and its basic services - is that normal?

I've kinda strayed away from the 2.1 update because it was either leaked or it was just rumors. Anyway, I have a Hero:
Firmware ver: 1.5
Build Number: Fresh Rom 1.1
Software version: 1.56
I'm rooted and I don't have any complaints. If I want to upgrade to 2.1, can I do that off my phone and the Sprint Network or do I gotta take it in?
Also, how will this affect my phone? Will I have to re-download all my apps? Do I have to Un-root and get the 2.1 update and Root again?
I'm perfectly fine with my phone now, however if it will substantially make me happier, I'd be willing to do it. Hence the rooting.

I want to make a tile based game for android. At the moment I am drawing each tile as a separate bitmap. I have a big for loop that reads from a string and draws different tiles depending on what character it finds to draw the level. I have allowed the user to scroll the screen using scrolling gestures. However the game is too slow. It takes a long time to update the screen after the user scrolls. I presume this is because it has to draw each tile's bitmap individually. What would be a faster way to draw the level? I was thinking I could merge all the tiles into one bitmap. But I don't know how to do this.
Anyway here is my code so you can see the problem:
package org.example.tutorial2d;
import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.GestureDetector;
import android.view.MotionEvent;
import android.view.GestureDetector.OnGestureListener;
import org.example.tutorial2d.Panel;
public class Tutorial2D extends Activity implements OnGestureListener {
GestureDetector gestureScanner; Panel main;
/** Called when the activity is first created. */
@Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
gestureScanner = new GestureDetector(this);
//requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE);
main = new Panel(this); setContentView(main); }
@Override public boolean onTouchEvent(MotionEvent me) {
return gestureScanner.onTouchEvent(me); }
@Override public boolean onScroll(MotionEvent e1, MotionEvent e2, float distanceX, float distanceY) {
main.handleScroll(distanceX,distanceY); return true; }
@Override public boolean onDown(MotionEvent e) { return true;
} @Override public boolean onFling(MotionEvent e1, MotionEvent e2, float velocityX, float velocityY) { return true;
} @Override public void onLongPress(MotionEvent e){
} @Override public void onShowPress(MotionEvent e) {
} @Override public boolean onSingleTapUp(MotionEvent e) { return true; } }
And the class that does all the work:
package org.example.tutorial2d;
import android.content.Context;
import android.graphics.Bitmap;
import android.graphics.BitmapFactory;
import android.graphics.Canvas;
import android.graphics.Color;
import android.graphics.drawable.Drawable;
import android.util.Log;
import android.view.View;
import org.example.tutorial2d.Point;
public class Panel extends View {
private int scrollX = 0; private int scrollY = 0;
public Panel(Context context) { super(context);
} @Override public void onDraw(Canvas canvas) {
/*Bitmap scratch; //Drawable scratch;
//scratch = getContext().getResources().getDrawable(
// R.drawable.icon); canvas.drawColor(Color.BLACK);
//scratch.draw(canvas); int origin = 0;
scratch = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.horizontal5);
canvas.drawBitmap(scratch, origin, origin, null);
int width = scratch.getWidth(); int height = scratch.getHeight();
scratch = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.room4entrynesw3x3);
canvas.drawBitmap(scratch, origin + width, origin - 32, null);
[Code]

No one has really come out and said it yet, but all of you with phones waiting for the 2.1 update can blame Google. By waiting until Jan 12th to make it available even to developers, they knew that their own Nexus One phone would be the only one running 2.1 at least for a few months, thus giving them an exclusive. Why not make it available to developers ahead of time so they could have a working version ready by Jan 12th? Clearly Google did it on purpose.

I am just wondering if it is possible to put live wall papers without custom rom? I am rooted, I have tried the new fresh and older versions, they slow my phone done, and it freezes all the time. I am on a rooted/stock version on 2.1 and would like to use live wall papers still? Do I have a chance? I don't want to just flash one of the lwp updates from the rom section without asking here.

Ive flashed with Fresh 2.1.1 and installed Systray monitor and off the bat the RAM memory was around 30 megs and otherwise performance was slower than what i was used to. I can tell its same or slightly faster than stock 1.5, but its way slower than Gumbo Kernel optimizations on fresh 1.1
When i reflashed fresh 1.1 and gumbo kernel, the available RAM went up to 86 megs and the phone became faster and usefull again.
Im afraid even when the official updates comes along, I wont be able to use it because I got used to Gumbo's speed. What are your opinions and pointers for Gumbo-like optimization of 2.1 roms?

Ok, probably been talked about but it's very annoying. I have the 2.1 update and the firmware update that came a week ago. I like that they fixed the keyboard vibrate problem(where it would vibrate long once, and then every other vibration would be half the length) but the lag is still unbearable. How come the iPhone perfected the touch screen and when HTC made the Hero(years later), it comes out worse? I can't type as fast as on an iPhone, nor can I make calls fast enough. Why does it always take so long for the phone to go into "call mode"? Even though I have no programs running in the background it is slow as balls. I'll reset the phone and delete all my text messages. The keyboard is unresponsive for fast typers. I'll tap a button and it will lag and act as if I held it and puts a symbol instead. Anyone else suffer from this problem?

I seem to get about 3Mbits down max speed on my hero, versus 17Mbits on my computer, both using wifi. Latency is also a slight issue. 3Mbits is okay, but just wondering if this is abnormal. I used the speedtest.net app, and I connect to my router using WPA1. Does everyone else get similar results? BTW I'm using Fresh 1.1 Rom.

I've had my sprint hero from day 1 and till this day I cannot delete my texts from anyone. If I try, my phone just crashes. my phone is so slow and my gf is such a snoop on my phone and I want to delete my texts from other people. I downloaded Delete Old Messages and I always try and delete stuff. It will try and delete them all, like around 3,000ish and I will leave the phone alone for like 4 hours and only around like 30 will be deleted.

I've been overall satisfied with the phone so far, but have some questions I'm hoping someone can answer/help me with. I've looked through as many threads as I could and tried the advice I found, but still no luck. The phone seems incredibly slow all the time. I came from a Palm pre, which had issues itself, but the Hero seems so much slower. Opening apps takes time, even the phone takes time. I've installed and app killer, no luck. I've reset the phone to factory settings, no luck. I've updated preferences, deleted apps, reset phone. still nothing. I read and was told that the Hero was faster than the Pre, but mine doesn't seem that way. Wifi always drops when connected to my home router. My wife Sprint phone always stays connected, but not mine. I reset the router, disconnected and reconnected the phone, tried all advice that I could find. Nothing. Visual voicemail doesn't work with bluetooth. I was told that this may not be a phone issue, but rather that the application doesn't allow bluetooth. Can anyone confirm?
