Sprint HTC Hero : Went Back To Stock - Rooting Still A Possibility?

Nov 10, 2010

I rooted a few months back and was running CM6.1 and I recently went back to stock to see how it was. But now if I try to root using UniversalAndroot, it fails everytime. I tried versions 1.6.1 and 1.6.2

Sprint HTC Hero : Went back to stock - rooting still a possibility?

Sprint HTC Hero : Stock Apps And Rooting

Dec 30, 2009

I know you can remove those bogus stock apps by rooting the hero but I have a slightly different question that I couldn't find in other threads. I am interested in rooting my hero just to remove the bloatware and then unroot the phone back to its original ROM. I am not a huge fan of tinkering with my electronics because it voids warranties, possibly bricks devices, and causes trouble with firmware updates, but it really ticks me off that sprint forces these apps on us and then makes them impossible to uninstall. Imagine getting a new PC and not being able to remove crap like wild tangent and the 20 free trials for programs you don't want or need. I know this isn't news to anyone here, but every time I see that Nascar app I get irritated. Seriously sprint? Nascar? Anyway, my questions are 1.) is root/unroot possible to remove bloat and return to original state 2.) has anyone had success uninstalling pieces of the bloat without rooting? I don't want to uninstall anything integral to the phone like the stock messages app, but Nascar has gots to go!

Sprint HTC Hero :: Losing Data Cennection After Rooting And Removing Stock Apps

Aug 20, 2010

I rooted my phone for the first time yesterday. I have not yet flashed any ROM's, all I have done so far is remove some of the stock apps. I have lost my data connection a couple times today, usually a reboot will solve it, however it hasn't on one or two occasions. It seems to have started happening after changing my boot animation to something closer to the 1.5 boot animation. Is it possible that this new boot animation is causing my data connection problems.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Does Flashing Back To Stock - 2.1 Automatically De-root

Nov 5, 2010

I bought a Hero (CDMA) from a friend. Wasn't sure if I was going to keep it (bought it dirt cheap so was maybe going to resell it) but after playing around with it I decided to keep it. Rooted it, flashed in custom cyanogen ROM...set it up just the way I wanted it, all before activating the phone. LOL

So as I'm sure many of you know, you can't activate with a custom ROM. From what I've read in other forums, rooting doesn't matter when activating, it's all about the ROM. So I'll have to flash back to stock 2.1 to activate this thing. I called Sprint and played dumb but there was no way they could activate it apparently. Well, technically the phone is "activated" but can not be "programmed" for use with a custom ROM.

So will the flashback to stock 2.1 de-root? Or can I just back up my current ROM, flash to stock 2.1, activate and then simply reload my custom ROM?

Sprint HTC Hero : Get Back To Stock 2.1 / Way To Delete All Bloatware On Fresh 2.3

Sep 4, 2010

So I rooted a little while back & have only been having problems. For whatever reason, the only rom I can get to work is Fresh 2.3. I've tried installing CM1, the nightlies, both the blue & vanilla themed version, and darchroid 2.8. I couldn't even get CM1 and darchroid 2.8 to get past the white htc screen. Is there any way I can get back to stock 2.1 and unroot? I'm hoping if I do that and try rooting again then maybe things will work. Also, is there any way to delete all the bloatware on fresh 2.3? I love the performance of the rom but I can't deal with how little memory it leaves me.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Any Way To Change Recovery Back To Stock Without Root? (Nandroid)

Jun 30, 2010

Let me start off by saying I did/still do have a nandroid and also a custom ROM zip on my SD. I used the ROM manager application to wipe data/cache, like I have done about 10 times this past week, and flashed a new ROM. So my phone reboots to recovery, "clockwork mod recovery", you have to use this recovery to use ROM manager, and instead of flashing the ROM, it gives me some error message. Now for anyone who isn't familiar with clockwork recovery, you can't flash a nandroid from it, you have to revert back to the stock recovery to flash a nandroid, or at least I do.

So now all I can do is reboot my hero which brings me back to stock 2.1 with no root access. Now I know what your thinking, "just flash your nandroid", but now I can't. To flash my nandroid I would have to reflash the stock recovery image through ROM manager, and now I'm stuck with the clockwork recovery image because ROM manager requires root to swap recoveries, and no ability to nandroid back to where I was before. Basically, unless there is a way to change my recovery back to stock without being rooted currently.

Motorola Droid :: Rooting Possibility With 2.1?

Feb 16, 2010

This thread will probably be best answered by devs who have the full knowledge of how our phones' internal 'stuff' works. But anyone with a decent idea/answer is welcomed to enlighten us.

With all the excitement about the 2.1 update and rooting the Droid and using custom ROMs, overclocking..etc..what exactly is it that allows a person to perform such actions? I've read on this site and a few other places that Motorola will be 'locking' the ability to root our phones with the 2.1 update.

One of Motorola's support pages has a posting from some lady that stated just because the OS is open source, does not mean that the devices have to be open to user configuration beyond what the manufacturer has available for us. She went on to say that when a certain business decision is made to allow for such access, it will be made based on certain factors....

I can't find the link to that page anymore. It was posted on Facebook the other day, so forgive me for lack of a link to show what I'm talking about in above paragraph.

I guess my real question is what do they do to the phones OS that blocks this ability to root?

And of course, if they can lock it up, can't some devs just 'unlock' it again? I have minimal to no knowledge of Linux and the ability to create/modify system files on these phones so I am leary about unrooting my phone to see what the 2.1 update will encompass. Yet I want to, just to see how well it works and what it offers.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Rooting And Custom ROM

Feb 4, 2010

I have been around these forums since the Hero came out. I was lurking then and became a member when I bought a Hero 2 weeks later. I enjoy my Hero although yes it is slow at times. I love watching my SprintTV on my phone and listening to Pandora. I have read that if I but a custom ROM on and SetCPU and a few other goodies, I can speed the phone up a lot and have a better experience. I also hear that I can tether without having to use PDANet.

1. Can I still use Sprint TV?
2. Is the speed boost really worth installing a Custom ROM
3. What is the benefit of just Rooting the phone and keeping the Stock ROM?

4. I see this voids the warranty, but if you put the stock software back on the phone, does sprint ever know that you rooted if you take it in for service?

5. And can some of you that have done this process list out the top 5 favorite features you got out of this. Makes these actual results, not just what you heard about.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Android 2.1 And Rooting

Jun 27, 2010

I just bought an EVO and like the features however its just to bulky of a phone for me . So I am going to go with the HERO.

I was told by sprint that if I upgrade to the 2.1 with the HERO I may have issues, that it was not designed for this upgrade in mind. Should I stick with the previous release?

Another option is, should I root the phone ( which I have no idea what that is) so I can get the 2.2 version when it comes out or maybe stick with the 2.1 version and with the rooted phone it will work properly.

I'm so confused, I consider myself pretty tech savvy but coming from a BB I'm new to all of this. Any help would be appreciated. I am also concerned about battery life. I understand how to turn off all the unneccessary crap like Wi-Fi, GPS, Messenger, etc when not in use, but will rooting the phone or upgrading to 2.1 or 2.2 help with that issue as well.

Sprint HTC Hero :: Applications - Before And After Rooting

Mar 2, 2010

I've been lurking the rooting scene and other places for quite a while, but have only just joined up in these forums. (I'm no forum nooby been on and been active on dozens of forums)
I have to admit, this most likely has been answered before, but I have been extremely busy lately due to school.

The question: I have refrained from rooting my Hero (I am a linux user in case any one wanted to know ) due to time constraints, I have yet to root it. I will probably attempt this weekend.
I bought the hero Oct. 11th, the day it came out iirc, and I have built up quite a hefty sum of applications.
After the rooting process, I plan use the gumbo kernel, and fresh1.1. One of the reasons that have held me from rooting is what happens to those apps? I will flash Fresh1.1, so they will be deleted. Is there a way to extract all the applications from the nandroid backup I will make before flashing Fresh 1.1, and put them on the SD card and install them? I would love very much not to have to go and individually download each application from the market again.
