I rooted my Hero and am pretty happy with the stock 2.1 with wifi and the bulk removed ,are there any themes I can install without putting a custom ROM on it?

I believe I've just rooted my phone, but haven't put a custom ROM on yet. I've got a few questions about it:
1.) What Sprint apps can be removed without affecting other things? (such as weather widget)
2.) Is there a way to eliminate some of the boot screens (especially the Sprint one) without putting a custom ROM on?
3.) Will root alone, and the removal of those worthless apps speed up my phone a bit? (especially the occasional lag in bringing the notification screen down)
4.) Can these changes be undone one by one rather than doing a complete recovery?
Rooted my Hero, installed the fresh 2.0d ROM, I have a theme that I just downloaded. How do I flash it my hero? would this process be similar to flashing ROM w/o actually having to wipe? (saving to SD card, power off Hero, boot in recovery, choose theme, allow installation, reboot?)

Today, I installed universal one-click root app onto my phone from this link : [APP] [ROOT] 1-click root for N1 (Latest ver: 1.6.2 beta 5) - xda-developers and I believe I got my phone rooted. Now, I am hoping to get custom recovery image installed on my phone so that I can nandroid back up my current stock 2.1 based image before installing CM6. I was hoping to try clockworkmod through ROM Manager app. Does this image work in HTC Hero ? If not, is there any other recovery image that I should try for my 2.1 hero ?

Got my HTC Hero on Orange 2 days ago, also updated it to android 2.1
Now the problem is that I was browsing the android store and saw a theme I wanted. I downloaded it and everything but I don't know how to set it as a theme, just need help with that. Thanks to anyone that replies.
How do you exactly install themes on VillainRom 12? I already have the ROM installed but I have no idea how to install a theme. And do I have to wipe my phone again to install it, cause if so, I don't think I wanna go through the process again.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI want to activate my hero again but it's rooted so I can't take it into the store to have it activated.I want to put my phone back to the original factory settings but every time I try to sync it with HTC Sync it just keeps resetting itself. I tried downloading a copy of HTC Sync and I have even installed it from my phones SD card (I backed it up before I rooted). Every time I plug the phone into my computer then hit the HTC Sync under notifications the phone keeps rebooting and HTC Sync doesn't even recognize it (my computer does though) I am using a netbook running Windows XP.

I know most of the devices that are going to run 2.2 have a 1GHZ processor and a lot more internal memory than my Hero does. I am only thinking about doing this because 2.1 on Hero is so glitchy, but I love the 2.1 apps. Any help?

I find that it really sucks that I can't use any of the dxtop themes or openhome themes in the market unless I actually have the app itself (which I cannot purchase).

Every time when i try to enter Hboot I get this error : Searching HEROIMG.zip ,HEROIMG1.zip and it doesn't finds it and returns back. I also cannot do a flashrec. I renamed image into recovery-backup,recovery etc,etc, but it says Flash failed,I changed version from the newest to the oldest tried many image files. Nothing helps. When I try to enter a recovery menu I cannot get a custom recovery menu,I am only being stucked at normal hero recovery menu.

So I thought it would be good for all the information to reside in one thread and if people are still having problems then they should make a new thread. I understand that it is sometimes difficult to find the right instructions as there are conflicting posts / thread everywhere.
There are so many guides out there. Each more confusing than the last. So many unnecessary steps. This way is quick and easy.

i ve a Hero with Build Number "2.73.707.9". It was bought in Singapore from the carrier SingTel. I ve read thru the instruction in the thread "How To Root + Install Custom ROM + Backup + More", but there dun seem to be an appropriate way for my Hero, since the method for South East Asia model is for "2.73.728.5" instead. so will that same method work for my Hero (aka the Gold Card method)?

Is their a way to extract the .apk of the lock screen from the droid, and just install it on the hero, I understand that the resolution on the hero is different, but hate the current lock screen, i have to slide it down 2-3 times for it to recognize. I downloaded lock 2.0 already on the market, its not bad. but it takes 3-4 seconds on my phone to actually give me the slide to unlock screen.
