Sprint HTC Hero :: Auto Power On & Off
Oct 14, 2009
Spent yesterday evening playing around with my new Hero...Pretty cool phone. One thing I do miss from my Blackberry is the automatic power on and off. I had it set to turn off at 11 PM and back on at 6:30 AM.
Maybe the Hero does it and I just havent figured out who to do it...Or maybe theres an app?

Are these the same? I have searched the forum, and can't seem to find the answer. I don't find any "auto brightness" setting in the settings menu on the Hero. I have auto backlight unchecked. What exactly does this do? Is this the screen dimming? Sorry, I am confused. Uh oh! Must be a senior moment!
While I am showing off photos I have on my phone, the screen dims...how do I keep this from happening?
Also, relating to photos..when I go to "Albums", I have 4 folders listed...Camera Shots, All Photos, etc. When I take a pictures with the phone camera, they seems to be in both folders. Why?

Is there a way to send text messages automatically when entering sprint network. Sometimes I send text messages while on the train. I set it to Sprint only to avoid roaming charges. My old phone would automatically send. This one I have to resend. Are there settings to auto send when entering the sprint network?

I dont know what "underclocked" means, but nonetheless the Droid's processing is a bit higher than the Hero's. And also,I know that the Arm Cortex A8 is a better processor than the Qualcomm's in the first place anyways. So, looking at those specs, is the Droid's processing power really that much more superior than the Hero's? Basically, I'm trying to get an idea of how much of the Droid's better performance is due to its processing power as opposed to its higher (and more efficiently coded, im assuming) Eclair OS.

Im using the new fresh 2.1 ROM which is awesome. In 1.5 I used the settings widgets to turn on/off wifi, 3g etc. On 2.1 there is a power manager widget that basically has wifi, BT, GPS, screen brightness and sync all in one widget. I liked the other widgets better as I had the ability to turn off 3g with it. Is there any way to get thos widgets back in 2.1? Another thing I've noticed is that in 1.5 you could turn off the GPS and not affect the location services but in 2.1 I cant find a similar setup....

I am ISO methods to conserve battery power on my Sprint HTC Hero.
I posted this thread in the Applications Forum:
WiFi - On & Off - Toggle App? Which is the best one?
ISO of a WiFi Toggle Switch so that I can turn WiFi On and Off as to avoid wasting precious battery power when I don't need to be searching for a WiFi connection.
Having this always on uses more battery consumption.
Correct?
Also, when Apps check for updates every 30 minutes vs. 4 hours, this consumes more battery power.
Correct?
So, here are some thoughts I have to reduce batter power:
Facebook Widget
I have the Facebook App and downloaded as well as the Facebook Widget.
See this video for info on the Facebook App:
www. youtube. com/watch?v=KcCpmwzL4T4
(remove spaces, I don't want to embed video here)
Questions
The facebook widget is pretty cool. It instantly updates my friends status and there's a quick-add update status text box.
However, I had the settings to check for updates every 30 minutes. Reduced this to 4 hours, but that was pointless since 4 hours is such a long interval I wound up going directly to the main Feed Home page to see the status updates list.
Is adding the Facebook Widget consuming more battery power because it's always on the Scene page, always running, always checking for updates?
Would removing the Facebook Widget save battery power?
I could simply make a shortcut for the Facebook App and open it when I want to waste time on Facebook to see how vain, narcissistic, and attention-starved my friends and colleagues are.
So, my key question here is would removing the Facebook App and only opening the program when I need it save battery power?
Twitter App
There's two options to place on the Scene. One is just a simple text update box, the other actually has a feed.
I'm using the former. Hence, it's not updating feeds and it's only being used when I enter text and hit send update to Twitter.
Also, I think I have my settings set not to check for updates.
I assume that because I'm using the non-Live-Feed option Widget on my Scene, this is not constantly checking for updates, and hence, not consuming a lot of battery power?
Correct?
Instant Messaging Programs
I have the Google Talk App, an Instant Messenger App (which has AIM, Yahoo, and MSN), and I recently downloaded the Meebo App (which has all of this plus others, including Facebook chat).
Meebo IM v21 Application for Android | Communication
I assume that by not running my IM App, or my Meebo IM App, and turning this off, this will save battery power. Correct?
Or, is it only consuming more power when I receive an incoming message. I imagine that the Meebo App, being connected to so many IM services, including Facebook, might be consuming more.
So, not leaving this on 24/7 would probably use less battery power.
Correct?
GMail App and Mail App for IMAP/POP
I have my GMail App setup. I'm getting notified each time I have an email in my Gmail Inbox. I've created a label - Inbox2 - to skip the inbox - for messages I want to read, but don't want to be instantly notified of.
I've decided not to use the Mail App - Connecting my Fastmail IMAP account on my phone because I believe this would involve running a second Mail App constantly checking for inbound mail updates.
See my post on Email and Mobile here:
http://androidforums.com/android-tips-tricks/15153-email-advanced-android-use-gmail-google-apps-fastmail-mail-clients-etc.html
By using only the GMail App and not using the Mail App for IMAP/POP, this is probably consuming less battery power.
Correct?
Question
What other steps, tips and tricks, can be taken to consume less battery power on the Sprint HTC Hero?

I just got this phone a few days ago, I came from a Treo 755p. I was playing with the phone a couple days ago and came across a setting that let me decide what the power/end call button would do when pushed, IE: go to sleep, go home then go to sleep, nothing. I left it at the default and now I want to change it.

Buy Mugen Power Sprint (CDMA) HTC HERO 200 1800mAh Extended Replacement Battery [HLI-HERO200SL].I ordered the Mugen Power 1800mAh battery for Sprint Hero a couple of weeks ago and it arrived from Hong Kong over the weekend. I'm not that familiar with Mugen Power but supposedly they are reputable and have good quality. The outside of the battery was covered in some sort of thin film/labeling that made it a snug fit, but it otherwise installed okay in the Hero. Got the original cover back on and if its any heavier I can't tell. I left it on the charger for 12 hours initially as instructed, and have fully discharged and recharged it a second time. I will do 2 or 3 more cycles like this to condition the battery. Now for performance, what I can tell so far. It definitely takes longer off a fresh charge to see even a dent in the battery charge indicator, whereas on the stock battery the meter drops below a full green icon pretty quick. I really feel like the 20% extra capacity is really there, as I was trying to come up with ways to suck the juice out of this thing so I could stick it back on the charge last night. Ended up leaving Sprint TV going for an hour and then read some ebooks. Left it sitting all night and it was red-lining but still holding a small charge this morning. On the old battery it would have died some time overnight (if not before due to all the network use for TV).
Just to be clear I never had severe battery drain issues with the Hero before, even before the update with the messaging fix. It lasts me a whole day without issue but I have to put it on the charge every night. I think I'll still have to charge it every night, or at least the next morning, but the added capacity just gives me a little extra boost and more peace of mind if I need to make extra use of my phone's capabilities.

Did a search but did not find anything else that mentions this. I am running stock ROM with no task manager. Over the last week or two each time I power off and then back on I lose random settings and also all my widgets stop working. Today when I power cycled I lost my pattern lock and ring styles, went from vibrate to sound. Last time it was all of my bookmarks...
Anyone else run into this? I am thinking I will restore to factory settings, but figured I would see if anyone else ran into this and got it fixed?

After I updated my phone to 2.1 and I entered my info for my exchange mail account I had to enter a password that pops up every time I wake my phone up. Is there an app out there that can get around this for me? I had one when I had a Treo and I didn't need one on this phone until I updated.

Plain and simple, I'm sick of waiting around for Sprint to release a version of 2.1, I want the full android experience. That being said after reading through the root manuals and faqs I still am not sure if it can be done easily on a mac. I'm hoping someone might have some insight for me, or possibly an autorooter that is mac friendly.

I am having problems with auto sync with gmail contacts. The gmail and google calendar auto sync fine, but whenever I add a contact I always have to do a manual sync on the phone to get the contact from my pc to phone or vice versa. It worked fine for a while but at some point just decided to stop.

Just curious about Android OS Auto-Rotation system, and how it matches up to competitors. Before anything I am NOT complaining, just a thought.
So everyone has seen how the Auto-Rotation is on iPhone, Palm Pre' and Android handsets, and I was curious... shouldnt Android phones be able to do this task just as smooth as iPhone and Palm Pre'? Bringing this to my thought was the app "Floating Image". The Auto-Rotation on the app is amazing, and that just shows me, and makes me wonder, why cant all the other apps have the AR as smooth as this? (Even the keyboard). The slow delaying fade away is kind of a drawback (to an extent) know that Im 100% Android is capable of doing over and beyond that.

I'm new to Android. Just got a HTC Hero yesterday, with the latest update of 2.2.
A couple of questions I can seem to find answered anywhere.
1. I can't figure out how uninstall apps.
2. I can't figure out how to set apps to auto-upgrade or what the function is to update all simultaneously. i've seen screenshots from others phone showing the "update all" function in Market. But it doesn't exist in mine. I'm wondering if that's because it doesn't exist for the Hero?

I regret this so much and I should think next time, but I tried to clean my usb port with automotive brake cleaner because it wasn't charging. This MELTED my home and back buttons so they don't click anymore, started to dissolve the exterior paint, and damaged some of the interior plastic parts near the usb port.I took it apart and the board looks good, just some of the plastic interior parts disfigured a little bit, hence the home and back buttons not "clicking". I rinse off the bottom part of the phone with denatured alcohol to try and get rid of any extra brake cleaner and now I have the components sitting in a plastic baggy full of rice for the night. Does anybody know if the dummy phones in stores have working buttons? I'm thinking of buying a dummy phone b/c all I need is the front housing and working buttons.

I've noticed that when I do a soft reset (power cycle phone off and on) that the start up screen has what looks like dead pixels. When the phone actually boots up to the HTC screen with Android waving the "dead" pixels disappear. They only appear on start-up and go away at the HTC screen with Android. I noticed about 5 "dead" spots. Is this normal?

If you go to menu > settings > accounts & sync, there is a checkbox for Auto-sync. This seems like the only way to have the weather on the flipclock widget auto update.
However, I do NOT want Google contacts to be auto-updated... I dont use Google contacts, all my contacts are Phone contacts, and I want to keep it that way.
Is there a solution?

I passed all the root tests in Fresh Kitchen and am ready to root. It is not clear to me if I need to wipe (I have stock ROM, don't think I need to wipe from what I read but want to be sure).Don't know if I need to have SD card mounted before starting rooting process. This is unclear in everything I read.Don't know when and how the backup process is done, after the Root or before? The backup process is unclear also.Don't know what RA is? I see it referred to but can't figure it out.I watched the videos on Fresh Kitchen 1.0.5.3 and am still unclear on the questions above. Are there written instruction on how to use Fresh Kitchen 1.0.5.3 to Root?

I have recently upgraded from an Samsung Instinct to an HTC Hero. I am currently on my second phone. The first one had a major OS glitch. As the service tech stated it was possessed. I am into my new replacement for about 2 weeks now. Currently, I am having horrible luck with the phone. The keyboard lags, the phone auto dials random numbers while scrolling the phone book and today while talking to my wife it made a conference call to my wife. Also the weather feature on the clock won't update the location unless I manually refresh it. These are just a few of the things I have noticed. I currently am running advanced app killer to save on battery life and the phone is up to date on the software. My brother has an HTC Touch through T-Mobile and it rocks and I have other friends with android phones and they don't experience the same issues.
