Samsung Vibrant : Increase Speed / Performance - Should Get Setcpu?
Oct 31, 2010
I have my Vibrant rooted, deleted bloatware using titanium, and running Ryanza'sOCLF...any other easy ways for a noob like myself to increase speed/performance or make the phone better overall.
Should I get setcpu? If so is there any danger of overclocking/how should i set it up?

Rooted my Vibrant pretty much as soon as I got it, installed SETCPU and while it did make my phone MUCH more responsive it was also causing problems.
I asked for help on XDA but most gave pretty vague answers, so I eventually ended up uninstalling it....
Well, anyhow, I found this really helpful post and now I am going to give SETCPU another shot. So if anyone else out there is having issues read this:

I finally tethered my moment the other day, works great, the speed of the internet leaves much to be desired. Is there an app, piece of hardware or tweak ect. that can increase the speed/bandwidth of this phone.

Can anyone use Google Voice on their Moment? When I get an incoming call, it takes so long for the call to come through that by the time I try to press 1 to accept the call, its going to voicemail.
I've tried it several times and its physically impossible to answer the phone, listen to who's calling, get the number pad to come up (after waiting for the screen to wake up) and press 1 before it sends the caller to voicemail.
I really like this phone, but its lag is wearing on me (and I'm running one of Joeykrim's speedy kernals). I hope it speeds up with the upgrade to 2.1. If not I might have to switch to a Blackberry (blasphemy!! ) until Sprint comes out with a faster Android phone.

Does setcpu speed up the Moment at all or is its only real use for downclocking to save battery?

Can anyone provide one of those developer codes everyone is using for the GPS, instead to change the Max earpiece volume in the phones ear speaker to a higher setting? I was in a loud setting today and I could barely her my conversations. I know this is possible because I did it like five years ago on a Motorola razor...surely this android phone can have volume algorithm changes also.

SetCPU claims to be able to increase your battery life by limiting the speed your processor can run at. This seems like sound reasoning at first, but then I remember roughly what a CPU is and how it works...
So let's say you've set a profile so that when the screen is off it will be limited to half the clock speed; around 500mHz. Lets then say your email wants to get updated, so your processor chugs away that that. If it was set to full capacity it may take say, 1 second to complete the task then go back to it's idol state. With SetCPU limiting it, it would take twice as long and would still use exactly the same number of cycles as before.
In fact, when you think about it, it doesn't actually matter what speed your phones processor is running at all the time, what matters is how much work you're asking it to do. Surely the best and only way to increase battery life is to simply have your processor complete less tasks, therefore using less clock cycles? Sending a text message uses the same amount of clock cycles no matter what your max setting is, so as a result uses the same amount of power.
If anything, having SetCPU running all the time just gives your phone more work to do and therefore decreases battery life?

What is the best way to set up SetCPU for optimal performance and battery preservation. A balance between the two, I suppose. What profiles do I need to enable and how should I modify them?

I rooted my phone about 2 days ago and I did a nandroid backup, titanium backup, used titanium backup to freeze some of the bloatware.. Have not yet installed any ROMs or Kernels. I got SetCPU and made several profiles in an attempt to increase my battery life. I wanted to see if it was working so I set up a widget, and despite the fact that my battery was at 20% (I have a <25% battery profile setting) the max was still 998

I was just hoping for some guidelines when using SetCPU as far as profiles, performance and battery life? I know it varies by kernel and right now I am using Chevy's uLV 1Ghz kernel.

There are a few things you can do that will help your battery life and performance...
Performance
 Do some graphical tweaks...
1. Install Spare parts
2. Set Window animations > Fast
3. Set Transition animations > Fast
4. Set Wifi sleep policy > Never While Plugged
 Adjust the Android memory management...
1. Install Autokiller
2. Menu > Presets
3. Most people have best results with 'Moderate' but you could also try 'Optimum'
4. Menu > Settings > tick 'Apply settings on boot'
Battery
 Wipe your battery stats...
1. Allow the phone to discharge completely
2. Boot into recovery (hold Home and press On) plug the phone in if you don't have enough charge to get into recovery
3. Select Wipe > Wipe battery stats
4. Go back and Reboot
5. Leave the phone to do a complete charge (preferably over night)
 Adjust your radio settings...
1. Go to Settings > About phone > System updates > Update PRL (it's normal that the phone process will force close at this point and the radio will reboot)
2. Go to your dialer
3. Dial *#*#INFO#*#*
4. Click 'Phone information'
5. Scroll down to the first dropdown selection and set according to your preference below...
WCDMA preferred (default) - This will automatically switch you between G/E/3G/H depending on the best signal available by constantly monitoring all signals. This uses the most battery.
WCDMA Only - If you only want to use 3G/H (3G) and do not want to use G/E (2G) select this.
GSM auto (PRL) - This is the preferred option as it will allow you to use G/E/3G/H but uses the PRL list on your phone (provided by your carrier in the PRL update) rather than constantly monitoring all frequencies thus saving your battery. This may not work with all carriers if you have difficulty getting mobile data in some areas you will have to use one of the other options.
GSM only - If you only use G/E (2G) select this (it's the same as selecting '2G only' through the settings menu). This option uses the least battery.
Upon making your selection the radio will reboot and the setting is saved, so just back out back to the dialer and you are done.

What kind of performance are you seeing with 6.1? I'm pretty unhappy with the speed it takes for the app slider, page scrolling and all that. I didn't run a quadrant score, I'm not really bothered about numbers. I switched to LP, that didn't help. Also, snap kernels are not playing nice with 6.1 yet (anyhow, the snap kernel features are reportedly built in), so nothing there. I'm back to myn2.2 with overclocking and it's smooth as silk.

I installed SetCPU and found it very confusing. I went into the market and uninstalled/refunded it. I got a message saying uninstall failed but it is no longer showing in my list of installed apps. My phone is very choppy/leggy now. Is there a way of checking my current CPU speed? I am wondering if when I uninstalled the app my CPU remained at my minimum setting.

I've been tethering my N1 with PDAnet and have been very unimpressed with the speed. I haven't done a speed test yet but it is noticeably slower than when I used to tether my Sprint BB Tour. BTW, it shows 3G and all four bars of reception. Anyone have any tips or tricks to increase the speed?

I have asked this on the bloatware thread, and I've only seen one person mention that they have seen an improvement (BringTheRain403). I know a lot of you have removed most of the bloatware by now.
Do you see a noticeable increase in performance or battery life after removing the bloatware? By removing, I mean freezing the apk's in Titanium Backup. I don't really have a problem with this stuff being on the phone, but if it will noticeably help to remove it, then I definitely will.

I have sky 20 Mbps broadband and as I live close to the exchange, tend to get pretty much that. However doing speed tests on my phone while connected to the Netgear router the highest speeds I seem to be able to get is around 2 Mbps. Is there anything I can do to increase the speed to which my phone can download from the router?

How does higher MicroSD HC speed of class 4 and 6 helps with Xperia X10 performance?
Any changes based on your experience?
Considering Xperia X10 processor Input and Output MB/s VS. Class 2 (2MB/s), Class 4 (4MB/s), Class (6MB/s)
