If you do it through the phones own settings whats the difference? Or should you just do it under the Clockwork recovery to be safe? Either way you wont lose root right?

Long time Droid user, brand new to the Fascinate Forum. I just bought my wife a Samsung Fascinate and I have to say the thing is absolutely phenomenal! It makes my Motorola Droid look like a 1990's flip phone!! Except for one problem the darned thing has been automatically spontaneously performing a factory reset / hard reset on itself. And it is happening at completely random times. You're sitting there playing a game, you're reading your e-mail or you just pushed the screen ON / power button to wake the phone up and unlock it and then, all of a sudden The phone reboots to the black and white Samsung startup screen, then recovery pops up and yellow writing appears that says "Formatting FOTA:", "Formatting DATA:", "Formatting CACHE:". Then the phone reboots again and comes up like you just pulled it out of the box; a full factory reset / hard reset. The contents of the SD card are thankfully fine.Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone know if there is anything I can do to turn on some sort of logging so that maybe I can figure out what causes it? This is now the second phone that this is happening to. We took the first phone back to Verizon the very same day we got it and they swapped it out right there for another brand new one. The second phone behaved perfectly for three whole days before it went and wiped itself. We thought for sure that the problem was with the first phone, but now it is happening with the second phone.I am going to start from scratch again, adding one app at a time making sure the thing continues to work. But there weren't any apps on the device in the first place that were really out of the ordinary.- Gmail POP3 Yahoo- Corporate E-Mail to Microsoft Exchange Server (No, it wasn't the Exchange Admin sending a kill package, I'm the Exchange Admin)
- Angry Birds
- Robodefense
- Facebook
- Beautiful Widgets
- Cal Widget
- Google Maps
- Pandora
I have all of those apps and more on my Motorola Droid (also connected to the same Exchange Server) and my device is behaving just fine.I'm trying to think of reasons this might happen and I'm drawing a complete blank.

Does system recovery "Wipe data/factory reset" resets custom kernel to stock?
I'm asking this because im noob, and I want to try JellyBlast for Galaxy GT-S5570I. It has two zip files to flash one is ROM, and one is custom kernel. If I do something wrong I'm afraid that I won't be able to restore nandroid backup.

Here is the situation, I rooted my phone a few weeks ago but didn't do anything beyond that. Installed a few apps like titanium backup and ROM manager.
I finally decided to try out a new ROM. Unfortunately I choose a voodoo rom without really understanding what I was doing. I ended up with some issues of everything force shutting down as soon as the phone started. So I downloaded all of the factory default files and used ODIN to flash everything back to stock. (System, recovery, and kernel tar files.)
While that seems to have worked, my internal phone storage claims to be zero. I have tried cleaning the cache through the settings->applications but while it seems to work, it still says zero.
I added the voodoo disable folder to the voodoo directory on the SD card but that didn't seem to change anything. I then read somewhere that I should be able to delete the entire voodoo directory after I flashed back to stock, so I did. Same issue.
I've tried the privacy->reset all data, but that fails. It's hard to read, but I think it says something about not being able to mount something and "data wipe failed".
I've put over CWMrecovery.rar in Odin and tried to use the wipe data option in it, but anything I choose after the initial update.zip file results in a blank screen. (Pressing the home key backs it out to the menu.)
adb still works, but I've lost root, so there isn't much I can do. I've tried re-rooting, but as soon as the phone reboots, the files I pushed over disappear. Almost as if it is stuck in a factory restore loop or something. I even have to go through the startup wizard everytime the phone reboots and I loose the gmail account that I have setup each time.

Anyone know how to do a factory reset within Clockwork? When you hold the up/down volume rocker + power button you get the following options: Android System recovery (2e) Samsung Recovery Utils -for BML -
reboot system
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partion
If i select 3 - wipe data/factory reset will that only do a "factory reset" If i select apply sdcard:update. zip, in Clockworkmod i get another option to wipe data/factory reset Which is the one i should use? and by doing so is this equivalent to "Factory Reset" within Android (selecting the factory reset check box)?

So I was trying to reboot my phone--I turned it off, then in a attempt to boot it back up, I held down the power button for a bit, perhaps longer than I should have. Maybe I even pressed it a few times, I dunno. The next thing I saw was it asking for my password. I had just set up my Outlook account (I knew other had problems with this) and I was required to add a password for security. After entering the password, the next thing I knew it was hard resetting! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Of course I had just gotten the phone set up how I wanted it.
Am I the only one who made this mistake? Whose brilliant idea was it to program a hard reset to launch by simply holding the power button for a few seconds? Of course there's no way to undo a factory reset. Needless to say, I am VERY unhappy right now.

I have a Samsung Fascinate and recently I just started up the phone and i see the Samsung logo and hear the sound, but the screen won't switch from the samsung logo. I tried doing a factory reset but nothing will work. I don't know what to do because I really don't want to take it back to Verizon.

After having a few quirky things happen with my phone over the past week since I got it (lost time, notifications are intermittment), Verizon suggested that I Factory Reset my Fascinate. So now, not sure I am going crazy, but my phone seems slower. Just unlocking with the puzzle piece has a lag and moving from screen to screen seems to be slower.Should this be possible? I thought it would be the other way around. From what I recall, it was screaming fast before I did the reset. Should I do it again?

My wife's phone needs to be returned because of continuous dropped calls. I did root her phone, but that's about. Will doing a factory reset be fine or do I have to un-root before returning? Also, does anyone know if doing a factory reset would improve the reception? Seems VZW hasn't been able to resolve the issue.

I have removed ROM manager and tried again. i have cleared download cache and still failed.

I don't like how Samsung gives us a nice 250gb drive but chunks it into two ~100mb partitions with a little left over for the hidden recovery one. I want to keep the recovery partition but have the remainder in one nice big drive. I tried out Easeus Partition Master but that doesn't seem to allow me to do what I want. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could do this?

I basically have no idea what I'm doing so I take no responsibility for how you use the information below, nor any responsibility for any issues it might cause. After following the rooting process and installing Titanium Backup and the 1-Click Lag Fix. I decided to explore and I was actually able to remove some of the bloatware apps without being in recovery mode. After obtaining root ADB Shell (the shell with a # sign instead of a $) I basically did the following commands:

I rooted my phone a couple weeks back. I backed up my apps with titanium pro and downloaded ROM manager. I clicked "reboot into recovery mode" from ROM manager and the phone went into recovery.
I am now stuck. I have four options:
1. reboot system now
2. apply update from SD card
3. wipe data/factory reset
4. wipe cache partition
I tried option one and clicked the button on the right side of the phone (the "enter" button), but nothing happens. In fact, none of the options do anything. seems like the phone isn't recognizing the enter button.
I have not flashed clockwork mod recovery. I think it probably requires some type of reboot but i don't know the steps.

what exactly does a data reset do? Does reformat (a) partition(s)? If so, which? If not, which files/directories are removed; What exactly IS deleted? Second, how would I do a data reset through ADB?
My screen is basically broken. It works for a split second when first starting up (cold boot), and flickers off and doesn't turn on. Everything else works. I'm planning to resell for parts; I think I've invested way too much for this phone (screen broke before, and then got stolen, and now broken screen again). I would like to erase all data on the phone. I would normally do this through Clockwork recovery, but can't on the account of being blind due to broken screen.
I did come across this thread, but it still left me questions. Is reformatting system necessary? How would reflash my ROM via ADB? What about wiping Dalvik cache? Is dalvik stored within the cache partition?
As for the phone itself:
Samsung Galaxy S Epic 4G (Sprint)
RandomROM Thunkderhawk 3.5
USB Debugging enabled.

After I received the OTA to 2.1 I have noticed more lag when scrolling between home screens, using 2D games is painful with the framerate reduction, and many items that are running in the background without me ever starting them. I also cannot seem to keep them closed either. I can also say that I am getting worse battery life now than I was with 2.0.1. I was wondering what would actually happen if I rebooted into Recovery Mode and did a Factory Reset with Data Wipe. Would this possibly help with the update causing these problems that were not there before?

I bought an Inc on Friday and I love it, best phone I've ever owned. Although my Eris, being my first android, will always hold a place in my heart, lol. My question to the brilliant minds here, If I factory reset and wipe data will it unroot my Eris? I'm selling my Eris tomorrow and advertised it as rooted. I just want to make sure it will still be rooted once I reset/wipe to remove all my info, contacts, etc. P.S. Wanted to thank all the wonderful users in here who have helped me understand and love the android OS. Scary Alien, Erisuer1, Frisco, Dooglad, and everyone else who I haven't mentioned. You're all class acts and I wouldn't know half of what I know if it wasn't for ALL of you
