Has anyone yet found a solution to determining data usage on a per-app basis that works with the Captivate? The only two market apps I've found, TrafficInfo and TrafficStats, both require Android 2.2 which of course isn't an option for us (yet).I had been fine but recently have seen my data usage skyrocket from 500-600MB per month to 200-300MB per DAY and yesterday over 500MB. At this rate I am going to blow through my 2GB only 11 days into my monthly billing cycle.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMaybe a rookie question, but here goes.I've seen a lot of posts about where to find an app/widget that allows you to switch between 3G and 2G. My question is: why would I want to do this? Does switching to 2G lessen the amount of data usage (which could be important, considering I'm on AT&T's 200 MB plan)? Or is there some other benefit/reason for doing this?Related: I have the SwitchPro widget, which has a 3G-2G switch available -- does this mean I am able to switch if I want to?
View 5 Replies View RelatedShould I go with the 200MB DataPro or 2GB DataPlus plan? I want to get the 200mb plan but fear going over the limit. I will only browse a few site like sportscenter. Wont be updating status' cause I don't have a facebook. Was wondering if I just do everything that consumes major data at home, which has WiFi I should be good right? On a second note how much data does using GPS every once in awhile?
View 27 Replies View RelatedHow often does the Data usage message update? I sent in a query for one last night and I got 31mb used, today I get a message telling me I am 65% over my limit an have used 160 MB. All I used the internet for was chat and some web-browsing (like 5 pictures and a few webpages), but nowhere near 120MB. During the time frame between when I checked I was on an airplane for 4 hours (so no 3G) and then went to bed and got the warning when I woke up. So how often does the data usage message update? Also, how immediately do you get the Data usage warning message?

View 16 Replies View RelatedI've searched for other threads but although somewhat similar they are not experiencing the same problems. Ok according to att's time logs of the phantom data usage times, it is exactly the moment i leave my wifi home signal and the phone switches to 3g. At that time a download ranging from 44mb to as big as 120 mb is added to my data plan. But i'm not using the phone. I have not downloaded any new apps, using my phone, or didn't anything different out of the ordinary. I have done one thing recently, that are not my usual. I rooted my phone with one click lag fix, the same day all the data was being done was being phantomly downloaded i updated one click lag fix or 3g. Now ever since then my phone uses data when i leave my wifi home service.I'M ALREADY OVER 247MB OVER 2GB'S
View 6 Replies View RelatedPSA: AT&T doesn't charge you for OTA firmware updates -- Engadget Mobile. So it says that they wont charge us for downloading OTA update, but... my log says otherwise. ( the 13k kb ones are the OTA update download btw) How come it ate up my data usage? I previously had approximately 85-89mb of data usage for the month, but after attempting to download the OTA update quite a few times ( I was frustrated since it keeps telling me that update failed ), it showed up on my data usage log. Now AT&T tells me that I've used 159mb/200mb so far, and I even got a text this morning saying I've used 65% of my data usage for the month. ( I'm on the 200mb data plan ) What the heck is going on? what if there's an OTA update in the future that are three digit long. If I go over my limit, I would have to pay extra $15.00 for another 200mb of data.

View 7 Replies View RelatedFirst of all congratulations everybody. I am soooo excited for each and every one of you. Seriously, I have a big smile on my face because I know that excitement, that joy you all are feeling. You won't be putting your phone down for days, I GUARANTEE IT! You guys seriously just purchased the most kick ass Android device, along with the rest of the Galaxy S phones!
The Vibrant and Captivate users are watching closely. Samsung has promised us a GPS optimization, and presumably your Epic and now Fascinate already has it. So you guys are our life line right now.
For those of you who will be testing out your GPS in the next few days, I'd like to make a few comments, so that we can get accurate GPS testing, to determine if the phone is actually using satellites like it should, or depends instead heavily on less accurate cell phone towers to determine your location, which means the GPS is still busted on these phones.
Okay, so here it goes. When testing your GPS, "Use Wireless Locations" should be turned off. Settings>location & security>Use wireless networks...make sure its UNCHECKED.
Read the note right under it, it says "See location in applications(such as Maps) using wireless networks."
If you put a check mark next to this, and turn this ON, then how will you ever know if the phone is functionally using the satellites. This is the big question with the phone, can it use and lock onto satellites or is Samsung hoping we use less accurate cell towers. Samsung hopes you have this on. I ask that you keep this unchecked, this is the only way to truly test the Satellite usage.
Further, by checking this, you are allowing Google to collect location data, even when no applications are running, they say its anonymous, but you never know.
So uncheck "Use Wireless Networks," restart your phone, make sure this is still unchecked, power up Google Maps, and go for a good long drive. Then please share your real world results. Including, how quickly it located you, was the location correct, how wide of a blue circle is there around your location, did the phone ever drop the GPS signal, etc. No 2 min drives, you really need to drive around a lot to dependably test this.
You can also download "GPS Test" from the Android Market, it will show you how many satellites your phone views, versus how many satellites are locked in. You need 4 LOCKED on satellites to get a true 3D positional lock that includes x,y,z,t. GPS test also shows your accuracy in ft, up in the upper right corner. Good accuracy is anything less than 10 ft. I have phones that get 5ft accuracy, the best accuracy I can get with my Vibrant is 40ft. Please report this number also. If you have time, upload a screen shot of your GPS test, or just take a pic of your phone running the GPS test, upload it and share your results.
You can also use the built in native GPS test. It is virtually the same as the GPS TEST program above, it's just not a pretty visual interface.
Go to your phones dialer, as if you are making a phone call, and dial in *#1472365# or if that doesn't work try *#*#1472365#*#*Then click on "get position test."
This test will show you your longitude and latitude, you can then enter this into Google maps to see how accurately it located you. It gives you accuracy in meters, convert to feet by multiplying the number given in meters by 3.28, you will now have your accuracy in ft.
The native built in test will show you have many satellites it has in view, the satellites that it actually locks onto will have an asterisk next to it. Please report both these numbers. Remember you need 4 locked on satellites for true precise 3D positioning.
I'm really interested to hear from prior smart-phone Android users, because these users will be able to make a direct comparison of the GPS to prior phones.
how to do wifi tethering on the Captivate (preferably free)
View 4 Replies View RelatedRooted my captivate using the release the beast upgrade. Got rid of the bloatware. added some new apps and tethering. My question is the tethering won't work click on it .it shuts down the wifi .and then it says can't connect. Any ideas?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI did search and install wifi tethering but for some reason it doesn't work so this is what I have and my question:
1. I installed wifi tethering. The app seems to work and it indicates my laptop connected. My laptop wifi icon indicated connected but I can't get any internet on explorer. Is there something I miss?
2. I also heard that install USB driver from this forum will do the trick but I can't get it to work? Do I have to install Kies on my laptop?
3. I have a paid version of PDAnet but can't set it up.
I've been reading some posts here and see that AT&T locks down tethering downloading. I tried using my wifi, that didn't work. Tried using AppBrain as a marketto download pdanet or easytether and I get a message saying, "The requested item could not be found"
View 2 Replies View RelatedWell I've been a long time user of WinMo and Iphones. The android world is all new to me. I have a few questions that hopefully are quick to answer:
1)Has anyone used the tethering that came built into the phone? That seems to be the only one that works for me. I tried PDAnet but I can't get it to work. But has anyone noticed that the internet is very slow when tethering?
2)I have rooted the phone and would like to remove some of the AT&T bloatware and what not but before I do, how easy is it to restore the phone back to factory? is it a matter of just using the restore to defaults option? Depending on my experience i may or may not return the phone in the 30 days.
3)Does anyone suggest a nice fast IM program. I'm using Palringo but there seems to be a nice big lag in between switching from buddy lists to chats.
Is there any way to get a shortcut, app or widget on the home screen that takes you to the battery usage list? its a pain to do settings, about, battery use.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have rooted my captivate and downloaded Barnacle, both the legacy and the beta version and both are discoverable from my laptop and ipod touch but none of them can actually connect, I went through all the settings and played around to no avail. I then tried "wireless tether" app which I can't seem to find in appbrain to link but the icon is the WiFi signal strength bar in green if that helps, the only thing this app does is say wi-fi tethering is on but the device doesn't show up at all. My question is are there ANY wifi tethering apps that are currently compatible with a rooted Captivate?
View 40 Replies View RelatedJust curious what brightness setting everyone is using? I'm talking normal, run-of-the-mill settings not what you crank it to when you're outside, and not what you turn it down to for playing games in the dark. I want your normal setting. Anyone have an idea of how much power usage is impacted? (Like, does 100% Brightness use 50% more power than 10%, or does it use 400% more power?)
View 13 Replies View RelatedI am trying to track down a rogue application that seems to be receiving massive amounts of data. On the iPhone, I would use about 200mb/month due to WiFi at work and at home. However, on the Samsung Captivate, I can go from 100MB/month to 2+GB/month! I noticed huge amounts of data being used on my commutes to and from work.
On occasion, my home WiFi/DSL would get so lagged due to my Captivate being on the network that my son would complain and I would then put the phone in air plane mode. I reasoned that if it was happening on my WiFi network, as well as 3G, then perhaps I could using my router to log the activity to see what sites my phone was trying to connect to, then perhaps I could pinpoint the offending application.
My phone was connecting to a website that was part of a posting that was on facebook, which was only showing on the Samsung "Feeds and Updates" widget. I wasn't running the native facebook application at the time. I had the "Feeds and Updates" widget set to never update, unless I manually did it. Why was it trying to connect when it shouldn't have been? Don't know. Am I certain that this widget was the offending application? Not sure. Since removing the widget, I haven't had any bandwidth spikes.
PS. I tried Droid Wall, but it fails to work.
