Motorola Droid :: Any Advantage To Removing Unused Files In System?
May 11, 2010I just rooted my stock 2.1 Droid and am playing with all things I now have access to. I realize I can now delete just about anything in the /system folder. I have already removed a few stock apps (like the Visual Voicemail). I suppose I could also remove unused wallpapers, sounds, etc., but would freeing up this space offer any benefit?

Apr 28, 2010Just so everyone knows, this headset is awesome. I got the Rogue at VZW store for $75. Also, those who don't know, the VIP program is discontinued - so nice of them to send notification. Paired beautifully - and if you have your Droid and another phone, it can take calls and manage calls on multiple phones.
Anyhow - it paired nicely, easy to operate, very clear on both ends, and it tells you the number that is calling audibly. There are "apps" for the headset and one of them is for voice dialing. I will try it, but the Droid hardware (I think) doesn't support it. We shall see. Anyhow, I always like a heads up when looking for a good product so I hope this helps someone.

Nov 17, 2009I uploaded about 50 pictures from iPhoto (using a Mac) just to see what they looked like and then later formatted the Droid's SD card, so the pictures were no longer there.
Now, if I mount the Droid via USB and view the file structure there is a folder named /albumthumbs which contains 50 files, presumably for the 50 pictures a had on the SD card.
To me, these file, unless linking to actual photos stored on the SD card, take up extra space in the phone's memory (not worried about the SD card). I wonder if I can safely delete them (just the files...not the folder)?

Dec 17, 2009I have a new Motorola Droid w/Verizon. Below 40F, my fingers will no longer operate the screen. Last night at 21F, I got a call that went directly to voice mail and when tried to check voicemail, the phone froze completely. I tried to restart it... it came up with "call in progress" when I tried to check voicemail. After about 15 minutes inside, the phone started working again normally. Is this a problem with all Droids or do I need to get another phone?

Aug 20, 2013I want to add some function to my system music player app. So I decompiled the classes.dex with dex2jar, copied the source code and add the code for my functions. Now my problem is that I do not know how to recompile the app. I can't compile it with Eclipse because it uses some system namespaces (in Eclipse it is an error so I can't compile) How can I recompile the app? I only have the *.java files.
Or can't I use the java files and have to edit the smali files? Of course that's much harder...

Jul 31, 2013I'm basically trying to rename an audio file to kill the camera click, but found an issue that might give me problems later with other things I might want to do.
Each time I try renaming the file, the file renames itself back to its original name after I reboot the phone. For example, if I add .bak or an extra space in the file name, it disappears once I reboot.
I'm using ES File Explorer on my stock, rooted Sprint HTC One. I mounted the /system path as R/W, and the file is /system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg.

Jul 8, 2012I have a DOMO Slate N9 SE tablet running on ICS 4.0.3. Everything is working fine but I cannot sign in to YouTube.When I click on YouTube for the first time, it crashes saying 'Unfortunately Android System has stopped' and the next time it gets stuck on 'Signing in'. If I clear data, again it says 'Unfortunately Android System has stopped' and then keeps on getting stuck at signing in.
But when I use applications like Opera Mini and Flipboard and load a video, the YouTube app opens and runs the video. When I click on 'like' to like that video, I get a pop-up screen asking me to log in using my Google account. When I click on it, I get the same error, 'Unfortunately Android System has stopped'.
I think there are system files missing in the device. The ICS ROM did not even have CalendarSyncAdapter.apk and I had to manually install it. So I think even the YouTube error is due to some missing system files.I have tried several other versions of YouTube app too but I get the same error.

Jul 25, 2010I have an unrooted Evo and I'm really low on internal space and don't want to root...if I could delete the system update files like "com.htc 2.1-update 1" and "Android System 2.1-update1", that would help to free up about 23mb of space...can I uninstall them or would that revert the system to the pre-updated state?

I have taken all the steps every forum on the web describes: installing everything trough the manager, adjusting the path in the System Variables, and finally it getting it to work together with my tablet. However, when I try to flash/copy/install files from my folder (yes these files are in the same folder as adb.exe and fastboot.exe, which is the folder I used in the System Variables) It can't either find these files or it cannot open these files. When i put in the command 'path' however. I does give me the path where the files can be found.

Then I tried to root again my Honor C3 with VROOT and it is OK again. Jan 11, 2010Is it possible to operate the wifi on an eris while having the phone/text service turned off (airplane mode)? My home is the only place that I don't get voice/text signal and if I leave my phone on it drains the battery searching for signal. I typically leave the phone in airplane mode while in the house and occasionally turn the airplane mode off to pick up the wifi and check email. Is there anyway to have the wifi operate continuously to notify me of emails, but have the voice/text service off to conserve battery?

Dec 9, 2009After a hard reset on my first Hero, the factory/system wallpaper files disappeared. Thereafter, I was unable to set the background for the lock screen to anything but the default. When I go to set lock screen background, the device reports "no media found".
Now that I have another Hero, I would like to backup those 22 factory background/wallpaper files.
1) Is that possible? If so, how? Does it require me to root the device so I can actually "copy out" the files?
2) Does there exist a backup software that can do a full system file backup? If so, please recommend one.
3) I have seen several file manager-like applications. Do any of these applications browse system files and allow one to copy them? (Is rooting reqired)?
4) Does anyone have copies of the system/default wallpapers? If so, will you please zip them up and post it here?
5) WHY did the pictures disappear after a hard reset? If they are part of the ROM, why did they not return after a reset?
