Motorola Droid X :: Iphone 3gs User Moving To Droid X
Jul 15, 2010
I have been an Iphone user since Gen1, and have just come out of contract under AT&T.While I like the Iphone 4, with the unfortunate AT&T service (or lack thereof) that comes with the phone, it's just not an option anymore. In my area edge is the only available service, and even that has drop outs frequently. Then about 4 months ago, the WIFI quit on my phone, which made the AT&T service problems MUCH worse, or apparently so than they were before.I have had more bad calls, and dropped calls and lack of data availability than I can shake a stick at.I mostly use the phone for browsing and video/Podcast playback, but I use it A LOT.I love Itunes, and have a bunch of podcasts, including video ones that I listen to quite a bit.So I hope I can sync them still.

First time poster here. I'm finally nearing end of my dreaded At&t contract and want to get a Verizon phone asap. My iphone 3G has been great in some ways like ease of use and compatibility with lots of features I like, but it's so slow to use that I find myself wanting to throw it on the floor almost every time I use it. Keyboard lag, crashing apps, apps not working, and poor reception really make this device poor big time. So I'm interested in mainly the Droid 2 Global, but I'll also look at the droid incredible and Palm Pre 2. I know the droid 2 global isn't out yet, but it looks to be similar enough to the D2.
1. With the D2, can you remove the memory card and still use all functionality of the phone.
2. How much of the 8 GB memory can be used to store apps, music, photos, email etc? Is it similar to the iphone storage where there are no limits to the number of apps and app size?
3. Is there a podcast store like iTunes where you can download ESPN podcasts?
4. Can you disable flash content in the browser?
5. Is there a home button to wake the phone up from sleep mode besides the power button on the top?
6. Does the phone come installed with junk/useless apps (stuff like nascar...)
7. Does the on screen or slide out keyboard lagg in apps like the iphone keyboard does?
8. Is exchange email supported?
9. How do I get the contacts from my PC onto the D2? (I don't want my gmail or facebook contacts).
10. Is there a facebook app (not a widget) so that facebook updates don't constantly load in the background?
11. Can you make/download your own ringtones and sms tones?
12. Does the D2 feel thick in your pocket?
13. can the D2 be used easily with one hand?

The wife and I have both been on AT&T for 12 years. I've had the 3G and 3GS and she has a P.O.S. Samsung Epix WinMo phone. She actually ordered an iPhone 4 but we were both unhappy with the Apple press conference and said screw it and returned it. The people at AT&T couldn't believe we were returning it. They asked why and my wife pretty much told them it's because Steve Jobs is a douche. She wouldn't even look at the Samsung Captivate on AT&T because she loathes Samsung phones now.So we went to Verizon and both fell in love with the Droid X. We went in to sign up tonight and ran into a little issue. Apparently some putz named Ernesto had used my wife's social security number some years ago to sign up for Verizon and then didn't pay his bill. So we had to go through this drawn out process dealing with Verizon's fraud department and prove that my wife is who she says she is. We're pretty laid back so we weren't stressing. The Verizon store rep was so apologetic and cool. We eventually got it straightened out.We got the phones for $199.99 each with no mail in rebate, no activation fees, free overnight shipping (when they are in stock ), and they paid the $120 ETF for my 3GS (coming to Craigslist soon). Pretty happy so far and looking forward to my Droid X!I just got bored with the iPhone. Not much of a difference to me between the 3GS and the 4. Good phone, just not for me anymore. Can't wait to dive into Android!

Apologies if this has already been discussed and not wanting to start any sort of flame wars.Has anyone else moved to Android from iPhone? If so what where the main reasons.I am patiently waiting for the HTC Desire to land in the UK to upgrade, my main reasons for doing so are:Dislike of Apple's recent activities, the seeming arrogance they have in thinking they are the only company that should be able to provide a touch screen smart phone.Getting away from the walled garden of iTunes and iPhone. I want to be able to use my phone however I like and not how Jobs and co tell me.Being able to change base functionality how I like. Prime example being podcasts.I regularly download 3-4 a week and hate having to either connect to iTunes or manually check every time for all my podcasts. There isn't an app for that, Getting the latest hardware that I want and being able to chose the features that are important to me. Do I want a keyboard, a better camera, a removable battery.

I managed to root my droid yesterday and put version 2.1 on it. I, for the life of me, can't remember the link that I followed from this site, but the files were from late December and updated multiple times..
The problem I'm having is the phone is now so slow and crashing all the time I'm trying to figure out if I could move it to a recommended 2.1 that people are now using, or go back to 2.01.
I would greatly appreciate any help, links or suggestions. I'm very new to the Android world, but as with my Blackberry, always tried the latest and greatest firmware.
I do have the BCDMRS-20100113-1639 backup file that it created on my desktop, but not sure if I just put it back in the Nandroid folder and reboot....does that go back to 2.01 or what.
Here's the link with the software I used....found it.

I had my HTC desire for a month, but I'm sorry to say that I will go back to iPhone. Don't get me wrong, the device is amazing, super smooth and fast, good camera, internet loads faster than my old 3GS and open apps in matter of seconds. Most importantly, it offers me endless possiblity of customization.Even having all that great features, there is something that lacks, and it makes me regret of my purchase sometimes. I tried to make it work, I tried to adapt and change my preferences, but I can't do that anymore.Today I was in the market because I just got bored of the only 5 good games for android. So I entered looking for soiemthing new. Seeing apps like "shinobi barrage" and "ghost chaser" being 4 stars and topping the games list, it made me sad. Games like those only get 2 stars in apple market. And I don't like having such a powerfull device just to play a game with 10 years old graphics. Then I encountered with the nazi theme and ringtone apps.

I get my first android phone, Nexus 5, tomorrow.
1) I have iPhone data plan through ATT. Is ATT going to make a big deal about me no longer on an iPhone? The plan allows me to tether so would like to keep it if I can.
2) Is there a tool that would allow me to transfer contacts, calendar, pictures and music to N5?

BGR has a video comparison up. The Droid X has much better contrast both indoor and outdoor. The iphone has horrible bloom in highlights outdoors Which crushes all detail. I would even go as far to say that the iPhone video is really bad. Not surpisingly, he declares iPhone the winner because it is 30fps and not 24fps. Personally I couldn't see the difference between the two speeds.

via iSuppli ... iSuppli Does Droid Teardown, Finds $187.75 Bill of Materials and Manufacturing Cost - iSuppli
Ah, here we go again: another report from iSuppli breaking down the bill of materials (BOM) for one of our favorite smartphones. This time it's the Droid / Milestone under scrutiny, Motorola's beefcake slider that currently sells for $560 month-to-month on Verizon ($199 on contract). According to iSuppli's analysis, Droid brings a $187.75 bill of materials that breaks down into $179.11 worth of components and $8.64 in manufacturing costs. Naturally, the BOM does not include licensing fees, software costs, accessories, or the massive outlay this device has received in advertising support. Nevertheless, it makes for interesting apples-to-apples fodder when comparing costs with the Nexus One ($174.15 in materials only), iPhone 3GS ($178.96 materials and manufacturing), and original Palm Pre ($138 materials and manufacturing). The single most expensive component on the Droid is the 16GB removable microSD card ($35) bundled with the Droid. And after a controversial MOTO report that demonstrated a lackluster capacitive touchscreen on the Droid, it's interesting to compare the Droid's 3.7-inch TFT LCD ($17.75) and capacitive touchscreen overlay ($17.50) with that of the iPhone 3GS ($19.25 spent on a smaller 3.5-inch LCD and cheaper $16 touchscreen overlay) and Nexus One (whopping $23.50 for 3.7-inch AM-OLED display and $17.50 for the touchscreen assembly). Rounding out the top-end costs are the Droid's 5 megapixel autofocus CMOS sensor ($14.25), Qualcomm baseband processor / RF chip ($14.04), and TI application processor ($12.90).

Is this possible?

I'm looking for a little advice from the very knowledgeable people here on Android Forums.I purchased a Samsung Android at the end of July. It developed a fault, and after about 4 months I've finally gotten it back. I have quite a few issues with Samsung, namely the poor after sales service.I also am very disappointed with the battery life. I know that if I wanted, I could methodically remove each app I have installed and test how this impacts battery life, but I didn't get the phone so I could spend half my time trying to get it to work right.I'm very happy with Android, its Samsung's packaging of it that I have a problem with. And that's what brings me here. I'm considering cutting my losses and switching the Galaxy for a Droid. What are peoples thought on that? Am I being unrealistic in my expectations of the Galaxy? Am I over estimating the Droid? Is there another killer Android phone coming out that it might be worth my while waiting for (I saw the Xperia X10 and it looks like a fantastic phone, but I think it not due out till Q1)?I appreciate any thought people might have on this.

I searched on how to completely remove both of these and one method was using Terminal Emulate. When i tried this method and typed in su to start the process it would say "permission denied". Do i have to reroot my phone again in order to get rid of these two apps? I'm doing this in order to take my phone to verizon. Do you guys think its necessary to make it perfectly clean of any "rooted" things? It is now unrooted it just has those two icons!! so frustrating. read somewhere else that if these icons are still there that i am still rooted...is this true? also I do not care if i lose everything... I just want my phone restored to factory settings so i can take it in to verizon..

Got my X today and after playing with it for a while and moving apps over I had worn the fully charged battery down to 30%. I decided to go ahead and make the old droid call quality trick of switching to ERV-B, after which the phone resets. The weird part is that the battery came back to 70% after the reset.

My issue revolves around trying to use apps like the default files app preinstalled on the Droid X, Astro File Manger, or Estrong File Explorer. For some reason when I move files from folder to folder or copy and paste files into different folders the actual files appear to be there but when I go into the actual applications where the files should be they aren't there.
Example: I had put a few self made ringtones and notifications onto my SD Card via the USB cable that came with the droid from my computer to my Droid X. I made a seperate Media folder on the Card and put sub folders in that like I was supposed to. All the correct files appeared where they should once I disconnected and looked on my phone. New ringtones were in the ringtone directory through accessing them through settings, notifications where there, etc. Now when I try moving one of my ringtones into my notifications folder via, Astro file manager or Estrong File Explorer or the files app that came with the Droid X is moves the files into the folder and you can see it moved by actually viewing it in the folder you just moved it to. But when I go into my settings, notifications tones and look for the file I just moved there...it's not there for me to select, but it is when I look at my file manager. I've tried this in the music folder, ringtone folder and notifications folder and they don't appear in the actual applications where I moved them to, but they appear in the file manager as being there. Am I doing something wrong. I don't understand why this is happening.

I have done some searches and cannot come with the answer I need. All the photos I take are moved to the SD card and not available to the gallery. It seem they stay in the gallery for about a day and then they are moved. I cannot figure out how to bring them back to the gallery or to so that I can send them out or edit them with the phones photoshop. The photos taken with the camera are on the SD card in the DCIM file while the downloaded photos are in the download file but I am not finding any menue that allows me to retrieve them back to the gallery.

Ok so i don't know if this is happening to anyone else, can't find anything even in a google search. Basically my beef win the phone is that if i press space and want a symbol that space away from the previous letter the phone will automatically move the punctuation next to the previous letter. All it does is switch the space and the symbol. This is really annoying if i want to oh let's say "quote" something. Had to type the symbol and backspace to fix and then it doesn't auto correct. Any idea how to fix this? It bugs the crap outta me.

Has anyone else noticed their icons moving around [by themselves] on the home screen? A couple of days ago, the "Phone" icon suddenly appears on the left-most home screen rather than on the center one. Today, I discovered that I had 2 Gmail icons on my home screen. I thought that it was my imagination, but this has happened a couple of other times.

I'm not sure if this has been addressed but it's something I figured out on my own and thought I'd share with the rest of the interwebs. For gmail to access all your old contacts its a quick process (once this is done all your contacts will be in your gmail account which automatically updates anytime a new contact is made on the computer or your phone so you only have to do this once)
Go to CONTACTS>make sure all contacts is selected at the top>MENU>MORE>IMPORT/EXPORT>EXPORT CONTACTS TO SD CARD>wait for this to finish>IMPORT CONTACTS FROM SD CARD>>>THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART>>>SELECT YOUR GMAIL ACCOUNT
This import takes a couple of minutes, but once its done, ALL of your contacts on your phone will be synced with gmail and like i said before, from this point on, all newly added contacts are automatically put in the gmail account by your phone.

So I've been less than thrilled with the Moment since purchasing the phone in April. Battery life stinks, camcorder quality is terrible (especially with the 2.1 upgrade), camera is fair but severely lacking in features, the phone has slow touch response times, and it's ridiculously bulky. I have wanted to put some videos up on youtube of me performing some of my music and the quality of the camcorder is so bad that is not an option. I have held off purchasing a separate Flip camcorder because I knew there would be a smart phone by Sprint that had a full-fledged camcorder integrated with the phone. At the time I bought it, it was simply the best smart phone Sprint offered. But the Samsung Epic 4G is going to be the phone I wanted initially. The specs are incredible, and since I won't use a phone without a slider keyboard the phone is perfect for me. Besides being much faster and full-featured than the Moment, the form factor seems a good bit slimmer than the Moment too (I've seen pictures of the phone only, but you can tell it's slimmer in the pictures).

Firts off, I would like to say hi to everyone, since this is my first post. Also, sorry if this topic has been discussed already, but I did a search and was unable to find what I needed. Alright, lets get to the question. I have a Moto Droid and just recently I received a notification about running out of internal memory space. Is there a way to move the apps from my internal memory to my SD card without rooting the phone? If this is not possible is there any way to free up more internal memory space?

I have been a verizon wireless customer for 7-8 years, and most recently I have been using a blackberry curve. (My first smartphone) However I haven't been happy with the phone for these reasons:
-Lack of apps
-Very slow
-Poor browser application
I have been looking into the droid ALOT, I just bought my blackberry 3-4 months ago and have already had to return it once (Couldnt get it to recognize any key presses, customer service told me it was a software issue). I am wondering as the droid has just recently came out, is it worth the $360.00 to upgrade? I know with new smartphones there are a ton of potential problems that could be deal breakers, that's why I'm hoping some experienced users can let me know about the main problems with the droid. After reading tons of reviews the only issues I've seen have dealt with the slide out keyboard...but is there anything else, hardware or software wise?
