Motorola Droid X :: Hidden Permission Access?
Jul 30, 2010
I've been closely watching what i install and what permissions they ask for. I installed "Diet & Food Tracker" by Spark People. On the app market it said that it only needed internet access.
When I looked under manage applications it said the permissions were internet access
read phone state and identity
read and modify sd card data
is it normal to have hidden permission access?

I have lost a few pdfs which I have been reading for weeks (!) on my Nexus 7 (Android 4.3). Via the reading history of my pdf reader (Moon+ reader) I can see that at least one file is still present in the cache under the following folder address: /data/data/com.google.android.apps.docs/cache/filecache2/c042587322c4a438463efbd2cc533cbf/mypdf1.pdf
How can I access this folder? When accessing the device via the Android File Transfer sofware for Mac, I don't see this folder. I have access to Android/data/com.google.android.apps.docs/files, but this folder contains no files but only another folder (called "pinned_doc_files_not_for_edit") which is also empty.
The lost pdf is still there, I can open it in the reader via the reading history, but I would like to access the folder to see whether other lost files (which are not in the reading history) are also still present. To be clear, the file which I can open is also not detected when searching the device for pdfs.

Looking for a navigation app with no "Internet access" permission. Maps will probably be loaded manually...
I've spent some time at the market with no results. I'm looking for an old fashioned solution where you simply load in a map into your device (manually), the GPS reciever takes the required signals from the sky and shows your coordinates on the map. That's it.
No internet connection, no fancy 'in store purchases', simply a man and his interactive map- just like my grandpappy used to do back in 1845.

I'm working on a security project which needs connect to internet in a stealthy manner. It will be perfect if our app can access internet without asking for the permission INTERNET. I found it is OK to open browser with a URL without that permission but the user will notice that. Is there a way to access Internet without the INTERNET permission and hide from user?

The DroidExplorer shell gives "adb: permission denied" cannot access properly into Coby Kyros MID7125 tablet.
I cannot see my root contents and folders with shell. I have rooted my MID7125 and it has ClockWork recovery too. I have made a backup successfully. I can connect to it with my PC using DroidExplorer. I go into shell and get my $ prompt. I enter adb devices and get the following: "adb: permission denied" Is there a password? If so, what is it and how do I enter it to access properly. How can I see the folders?
I used this method to root. [URL]
I originally used the SuperOneClick method and had the same outcome.
I followed this to get my PC ready for DroidExplorer. Howto: Install the Android SDK - CyanogenMod Wiki

I was looking at this free Kingsoft Office and here is what it lists among its required permissions:
"Access email provider data. Allows this application to access your email database, including received messages, sent messages, usernames and passwords."
It seems highly suspicious to me even without the usernames and passwords part. The app is in Google Play.

A question about the internal storage that's private to each application (especially when storing files with Context.MODE_PRIVATE).
How is that storage actually assigned to the application? Just by package name or also somehow bound to the sign key of the app?
Let's say I have installed application 1 and then write another application 2 with the same name and package name (just differently signed with different keys) and install it (app 2 replacing app 1), would that application 2 get access to the /data/data/[app]/files ?
Or would I not even be able to replace app1 with app2 due to different sign keys in the first place?

Anyone have a problem connecting to a network with a hidden SSID? My wife can connect to our router fine with her Droid INc (wireless N router). But i can't unless i enable broadcasting the SSID. I found the hidden SSID enabler app, and going to try that. If that doesn't work does anyone else have any ideas? If i enable SSID broadcast i connect right away. If i disable it, i lose the connection and it is "out of range". Very annoying as i live in a condo unit with 10 other wifi networks in my range. Would like to keep my netwrok as private as possible.

If you select MANUAL Location (and enter your ZIP Code), it unlocks two additional features that the automatic location folks don't have?
1. RADAR Button
2. Hour by Hour Forcast
To access, set your weather setup to manual, set it in the dock, and touch the weather wigit once it appears. Change it to automatic and repeat....buttons gone.
Would be nice if it were available for both!
QUESTION: We all have noticed the intermitant weather wigit over the past few weeks, but has anyone used (2) docks in two different locations (or dockrunner) and had it successfully change your city? I haven't had any success - BUT I am not sure if that is a bug or design...

Here is the scenario:
Motorola Droid - Original
1. Rooted 2.1, then
2. OTA Stock Update to 2.2, then
3. Seem to have lost root, However - I still have the Superuser Permissions Icon.
I use Barnacle for WiFi Tether - I get a "Permission Denied" error when I try to start the application. I also went into the terminal emulator and tried an "su" which also gave a permission denied response. I tried "sudo" and also got permission denied response. Others have told me this is common with this progression of events. However, How do I now ROOT 2.2 in this scenario?

I'm wondering if there is a way to hide some field in Android.
I tried with setting the value in a textedit and then make it invisible, but the result is that the value is invisible, but the control takes space.
In my case, I want to store some extra value in a row of a ListView, instead of using hidden fields, is there another solution?

This is something that has been addressed with other handsets, and other users, sometimes with success, and sometimes without. My friend has solved this problem with his HTC Hero. You're trying to connect to a WiFi network that is hidden. In other words, the name isn't broadcasted. In other words (again), your WiFi won't automatically find this network.
So you manually type it in Menu > Settings > Wireless Ctrl > WiFi Settings > Add WiFi network. You type in all of the details. No connection. As if it's not there. So you find that some others with their Android phones, have found success using HiddenSSIDEnabler from the Market. Removing the 'Remembered' network. Adding it freshly. Using HiddenSSID. Removing it again. Adding it again. In any order. No luck. onnecting to a non-broadcasting wireless network

I'm thinking about using a hidden api to turn the screen off in my app. setScreenState from http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/frameworks/base.git;a=blob;f=core/java/android/os/Power.java does what I want, but its a hidden API. Does that mean I shouldn't use it? I would think its a fairly stable api.
Currently, I'm setting the screen timeout to 1 millisecond, and then resetting the timeout once the screen turns off. However, android ignores the 1 millisecond and instead it takes about 3 seconds to turn off and sometimes it ignores it completely and doesn't turn off.
Any suggestions?

I've been emailing the dev of Toggle Data Widget because I could not get it to work on my droid reading through the comments I was not the only one. He is telling me to look in my settings under wireless & networks and tell him what I have for APN's. Well the thing is I don't even have anything in there! Does some body know where to find what he's talking about? I emailed him telling him I couldn't find it anywhere and he seems baffled as well.
