Motorola Droid X :: FREE Exchange Access Alternative
Sep 12, 2010
If you haven't allowed 3rd party app sources you will be prompted with this warning. And will be able to enter settings to allow 3rd party. Then Back to click the downloaded file to install. This will allow you to use Exchange with having to purchase Touchdown.I used this on my former windows mobile phone to access my personal exchange server (used their server side software (free )) and my works exchange server.

I just picked up the Motorola Droid, and I'm loving it.I'm trying to find the best free alternative to SMS (because it's ridiculous that after paying $30/mo for 3G access, I have to pay more to move 100-character messages around on the same network...).Ideal would be something like BlackBerry Messenger. So far, I've been using gTalk with my status set to invisible, and that seems to be a pretty good alternative. When I initiate a gTalk conversation with an invisible status, the conversation usually remains short - like an SMS conversation. One downside is that people never initiate conversations on gTalk with me while I'm set to invisible.

With Oracle suing Google over Dalvik's patent infringements, I'm wanting to get off the Java bus I've been on for 10+ years. I really enjoy coding in Java, love the tools (eclipse, profilers, etc...), cross platform, garbage collection, etc. What is the best alternative out there? I'd like to build cool gui's, mobile apps, web apps, back-end integration, pretty much everything and anything. I don't really want to invest in learning 5 different languages for 5 different scenarios if possible. I'd love to be contributing to FOSS. Even if many things aren't there yet, I want to get on the train with a technology that is headed in the right direction. I supported Java out of the box with 1.0 implementations because it got me off of MS choke-hold. Now I want to get off the Java train for the same reason - Oracle! I looked briefly at Parrot VM. I've never felt too comfortable with Dynamic languages, but if they are really the way to go, I'll battle that early learning curve. Tried Ruby on Rails for a while, and it was okay, though I missed my Eclipse debugger, code completion, etc., so didn't last long. Trying out Groovy...but I want to distance myself from any litigation and really want to support freedom. I'd prefer not to program in C or C++, don't want to do memory management. So, in conclusion, what is a good next step for an old Java hand? What languages have seasoned Java professionals moved onto? Do I need to worry about things like Scala that are designed to run on the JVM? What does this lawsuit about Dalvik mean?

I'm a long time user of LauncherPro on the Moment and though Sense is fine, I'd like to go back. The one thing I'm missing is some sort of widget or shortcut to toggle 4G on my Evo. I've searched the market and frankly, I'm not paying a buck for a simple widget. It might be worth a quarter to me, but not a dollar. Ideally, I'd love something like the notification setup from the Epics touch wiz which would be worth some $$$ to me. Anyone know a free or cheap alternative?

I wanted to know if there's a way to tether with the USB cable. I currently have Velocity v0.03 w/ drellisdee's GNM Turbo 4 kernel. The WiFi tether works fine but I want a way to tether with wired so it doesn't eat up my Ally's battery. I seen this: android-wired-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code. But it requires RNDIS kernel (or whatever it is), and apparently the kernel I have loaded doesn't have this. Any other options or is there I can get the RNDIS kernal on my Ally? Yes, I realize it requires an app. I'm asking for a free alternative and NOT a paid one.

I used to use eWallet on Windows Mobile and really liked how it worked. Since switching to Android, I've tried Splash ID and so far I don't like it as well. I have a lot of problems syncing.
Is there another alternative to Splash ID out there?

I hate the fact that when browsing web sites, I'm always directed to the "mobile" (WAP) site if there is one! Just wondeirng if there is a way to keep the Droid X browser from loading mobile (WAP) sites? I don't care to be directed to mobile sites. I know with the HTC Droid Incredible, as well as many other Android smartphones (other than Motorola it seems) there is an option to disable mobile sites and get the actual web site like it would be displayed on a desktop computer.

I'm trying to get my new DX configured to my liking and am thrilled....except that I can't get Contact Quick Tasks to behave. I'm using Launcher Pro and suspect that's the problem. But what I need is to be able to one-touch dial a dozen or so contacts. (What a concept!) Is there a workaround or some other widget or app that can get me quick access to "speed dial"?

A few weeks back I started using the full version of droid live (has another name now but I forget it at the moment) to stream various music and talk radio stations (both national and international) The program worked great, as I was able to easly connect and stream music/talk with virtually no drops. There is one local sports talk radio that I listen to the most. All of a sudden, in the last week or so, live has had serious problems connecting to that one specific station. Once connected however, the program actually works fine with no drops. it just takes repeated attempts to get it to connect. I know it is not a signal issue, as I get great 3G in my home and business. Sent an email to the developer a few days ago and have not heard anything back yet. So do any of you know of any decent programs that might rival droid live?

I would really love to have access to my work email without needing access to OWA (like Touchdown). I believe the iPhone has this capability, unless their method does in fact rely on OWA. Why can't it be done for Android? My IT department simply refuses to give access to OWA without being in the VPN, so that ruins Touchdown for me.

I noticed that there was an earlier thread on this subject; however, it did not appear to solve my problem. I am trying to access my outlook exchange account on my EVO's standard email app using OWA. I've tried a few different configurations with no success thus far. I was able to access my exchange account using my blackberry. Can anyone give me specifics as to how I can set this up on my EVO?

After upgrading to 2.2, my EVO can't get to the exchange server anymore. Has anyone else experienced this? I am sure it has to do with a certificate (Equifax one).At work when I get it on the wifi it makes me install a certificate and it will be on exchange fine, actually thats how i set it up. But one cell data or anything else it won't sync.On 2.1 it synced fine.

I'll be new to Android starting on June 4th and I'll be retiring my Blackberry Tour. There are a few apps on my Blackberry that I really like and use daily. So I have a few questions for the Android gurus out there.
1. Exchange Email- I work for a Computer Company that blocks access to their Exchange Server and although I've requested access repeatedly, they deny me every time. Is there a work around for Android similar to the Blackberry Desktop Redirector?
2. Sirius/XM- I know it's not available yet for Android but I was wondering if anyone has an update on the future availability of this App for the Evo.
3. Password Keeper- I would not be able to survive without this App on my Blackberry. Is there something as good or better available on the Android Market?
4. Can anyone recommend a good Chess Application for the Evo?

im new to Android. before i used a Windows Phone. So i have setup my normal Exchange Account, like before on Windows Phone. I have found the Contacts, the Calendars, the Mails but not the ToDo or Tasklist. Where do i found the Todos? I hope, i do not need a thirt party app? I can not think that such a simple function is not included in Android.

I know with Android 2.x there is the ability to tap into Microsoft Exchange, for at least email, if not calendar and contacts. I would like to see how this was accomplished. Particularly because Microsoft Exchange exposes SOAP web services, and I understand there is no native Android support for SOAP. Since this is open source, shouldn't I be able to find something in the Android source? If so, can you point me in the right direction of where to find it in the ~4Gig (!) source? I want to develop an application that accesses Exchange contacts and calendars, but don't want to reinvent that piece.

So many apps, particularly free ones, seem to get access to things on the phone they don't need. For instance why would a card game that isn't an online card game need access to phone's location? Should I be worried that less than scrupulous folk are putting apps out in the "market"?

I think lots of people here hold back a little bit on how much data they expose to google. I have a specific question. When apps access address book, what address book are they accessing? The phone address book? What if it's a tablet, which has no address book, is it access your google contacts?
Quote:
YOUR ACCOUNTS
FIND ACCOUNTS ON THE DEVICE
Allows the app to get the list of accounts known by the tablet. This may include any accounts created by applications you have installed. Allows the app to get the list of accounts known by the phone. This may include any accounts created by applications you have installed.
I have an account used specifically for playstore and my tablet and phone. I also access my personal gmail through my tablet or phone, using a different account. Does that mean that Angry Birds knows about both the account used by playstore AND my personal gmail account?

My recurring events (classes at college) were set in January 2010. Droid syncs easily with corporate exchange server. All is well. Now, events occuring after DST here in Eastern zone are ahead by 1 hour. My 9:00 class on Tuesday March 9 is now showing as 10:00 on Tuesday March 23. I called our IT folks and they suggested it is a Droid issue. I called Verizon and they were stumped. Verizon tech called Motorola tech. I was told that this is a Google issue and there is no fix (unlike the old Windows mobile fix) and he was very sorry. Anyone have suggestions? Motorola tech suggestion was that I need to reset the events that occur after DST.
