Motorola Droid X :: Can Dx Output Streaming Video Via HDMI?
Jul 18, 2010
Can the Dx output anything other than pics/videos captured with the phone? My Dx is in the mail and was wondering if I should buy a cable because I want to use it to stream youtube or other video content from the phone to tv. If it can not be done now, is that a hardware issue or a software issue that could be changed later? Also so I can control the phone while it is connected to the tv I wanted to get a 15' cable. This is the only one I see but it does not say if it is type D or not. Does that matter? I subscribed to JetFlix, in the market. (Jetflicks! TV - Android app on AppBrain) It is a $3 app with a $10/month subscription. I watch it on my phone in my car at the lake during my lunch break. I know that probably sounds sad, but it is AWESOME. I'm a manager in the dang corporate world, and I forget that I am at work by the time I'm done with a movie and come on back to the office. It's my dirty little secret. ANYWAY, there are some great shows available on this application, and I was thinking of replacing my Netflix subscription with it if I could just stream it to my TV at home. I haven't bought an HDMI cable yet, because I don't have a use for one just yet. But is anything "streamable" to the tv? I read that only pictures and videos that were shot with the camera stream though the HDMI cable. If that is the case, what is the point? I keep all that stuff on a hard drive anyway. So my question: can I hook up an HDMI cable and stream Jetflicks to my TV? The Jetflicks movies play on the native Internet browser. So I guess a more accurate question would be: Does the native internet browser display on the TV through the HDMI cable? If so, is there audio?

I just received a micro hdmi an wanted to know what is the best settings for just connecting my DroidX to my tv to watch dvds? Do I skip the converting process altogether an just make sure that the video that I burned from a dvd can be played with the Droid X media gallery while connected to hdmi? I have converted some dvds (Super Troopers) for optimal playback on the Droid X but when I watch that video through HDMI it really isn't the best quality. I have used DVD Catalyst.

just wondering if anyone has tried getting video output with a 3.5mm to RCA cable. wonder if it may be less restrictive than the HDMI hookup... but I'm getting ahead of myself: I'm not even sure if it works at all. Anyone wanna give it a shot? TBH it probably won't work, but we may as well give it a shot right?

What resolution will the EVO output? I can't imagine it being anything higher than what it shows on the screen. I mean if I hook it up to my 24" monitor, is it going to output at 1920x1200 or whatever?

Ive been raking my brains trying to figure out how to play 720p movies on my HDTV in 16:9 aspect ratio (or 1.78), whereas it would fill the screen of the HDTV nicely just like Niko does it in this thread Video Demo: HTC Evo playback of HD/720p movies over HDMI out. I have a couple of 720p bluray movie files on my PC that i want to encode but now im not even really sure if they are really 720p. When i upload them into handbrake, it says that the source resolution is 1280x544 and the other one 1280x528 with a 2.35 aspect ratio. Doesnt the second number have to be 720 in order to be considered true 720p HD resolution? Everytime i try and change the 528 to 720 on hanbrake, it doesnt let me. And also handbrake doesnt havent an option where you can change the aspect ratio. When i finish encoding, i get the stupid black bars. i realize the video file might have been shot in a 2.35 aspect ratio or whatever but when i play it in VLC it allows me to change it to 16:9. Basically, I want the video to come out in 1280x720, 16:9, 1.78 resolution and aspect ratio as its default settings. This would be much easier if VLC was playable on Android. At the end of the day, im just trying to find out how to watch 720p video on the HDTV in fullscreen or almost fullscreen (i know theres a couple of inches of black bars in 16:9) just like the guy in the thread above.

This is the final question for me that has yet to be answered. It's the only thing still left up in the air. I want to be able to plug my EVO into the TV and use all the features currently on the phone. Specifically web browsing. If this is not available can we blame it on a hardware limitation or software. Maybe it's something that will work with the Dock when it's released since it comes with an HDMI cable. I can't believe I can't find a straight answer considering Ive seen the question asked on other forums as well. If it works the way I would hope then it's an easy replacement for my jaloppy of a computer.

Is it possible to force Android to output ONLY stereo over a HDMI connection?
My Denon receiver initially receives a stereo signal from my Asus TF700 tablet, but after a few minutes the tablet starts outputting a 7.1 signal (3 front, 4 surround, 1 LFE). I've tried modifying audio_policy.conf but it hasn't seemed to make a difference. Is there anything else I can try, or a tutorial on how to add a limited 'hdmi' entry to the audio_policy.conf?

When I connect my Droid RAZR MAXX or ASUS Transformer to my HD monitor, the video displays fine, but there is no sound. I suspect this is because the monitor does not have any speakers, but I was hoping there would be a way to just let the audio play from the device. That's what my laptop does when connected via VGA (which might not support audio anyway; I don't know a lot about the different inputs/outputs).

I have searched a lot over google etc. about knowing if the smartphones with HDMI output capability actually outputs 720p or 1080p on HDTV or it is just that the screen resolution is upscaled to HD..
I can understand that all HD games are high in graphics but they are not actually 720p resolution certainly..but i am talking about HD movies which are of 1280*720 resolution which plays on my xperia neo v like a true HD video with high density of my screen with bravia engine enabled it looks awesome on my mobile..
But my query is when I connect it to HDTV by HDMI cable provided with xperia neo V...the same HD (1280*720) does not seems to be like HD..So is it that it outputs the mobile screen resolution by upscaling even in the case of HD files ?
Is that just happens with xperia neo v or all the android smartphones with HDMI output capabilities just upscales the resolution?
how to make the HDMI output for HD videos look as good as possible..(specially on my xperia neo v)

I am thinking of buying an Iconia Tab A1-810 which I plan to sometimes use to watch movies on my TV. Since it has an HDMI port I assume it will be pretty straightforward but my question is will it be able to output 1080p or at least 720p movies on my TV. Will there be lag or something?

Does anyone have an issue outputting You Tube full screen over 720p? When watching HD videos over HDMI the video has black bars over all sides. When watching videos over 420p, it fills the screen fine, but the quality isn't the same. I've tried on an Insignia and Samsung.

I have used Handbrake to convert almost all our DVD's to MP4 (web enabled) on a 2 Terabyte network drive.
I'm looking for some "streaming application" that will allow me to watch any of these movies on my phone over the internet.
Is there such a thing? I know I have to have a dedicated computer (gateway) to access the movies, but after searching Google for the past hour, I've given up.
The only thing I can find is Orb, but the reviews aren't the greatest.
Has anyone done this successfully, and willing to share how they did it?

TempMon is reporting 107 F + while streaming. That's battery temp, of course.CPU is significantly hotter than that.I've tried clocks from 700 up to 1100 and can't get it any cooler.at 700 its barely responsive enough to be functional.at 1200 it reboots.

AT&T evidently has a new campaign to get iPhone users to reduce the amount of video streaming and other data intensive activities they engage in, and may start charging them based on data use.
Their network just can't handle current data levels, and AT&T can't get it updated fast enough to handle the data requirements.
Kind of blows up the ads they've had on TV showing how great their network coverage "really is."
Already been giving my iPhone buddy a hard time showing off my Droid to him, now I'm really going to have some fun at his expense.

I have a problem in playing video file in android using VideoView. When I keep the .3gp video file locally in res/raw folder, the video file plays successfully. But when I keep this same file on live web server and stream it, it runs on Android G1, Nexus one and Tatoo which I have for testing. But It fails to stream and play on Motorola milestone. I got the error on device as: 'This video is not valid for streaming'. What problem it should be, I am really seek of finding it. Is it the issue of programming or file format?
