View 3 RepliesMy phone is on the newest kernal as of today. 2.1-update1 and kernel version 2.6.29 Is it safe to root? What are the benefits? I'm a nerd at heart I do notice I have to kill apps running in the back ground. Anyone tell me what the benefits of rooting are? Also can I do it on my version? If so, is there a guide?
View 36 Replies View RelatedI am going to wait to root for a bit but ultimately it is something I think I want to do. I understand how to do it and the risks involved, but what I am not really clear on are the benefits. I know it lets me run certain applications that require root access. But which ones are really that great? I don't need to overclock it. Its fast enough and battery life is bad enough. I don't need tethering although access point capabilities might be cool to show off. So what kind of programs / capabilities would I really be seeing?

View 3 Replies View RelatedBefore I get started rooting what would you say the main benefits are over stock 2.1? Just want to make sure it is worth it as my phone is working fine atm. A little extra speed is always nice but anything else?
View 10 Replies View RelatedCan someone tell me about the benefits of rooting? Also after rooting, can I see paid apps? I live in a country that doesnt show paid apps. Its like the only reason I would want to root my phone.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just wanted to know if there are any benefits of rooting without installing custom roms? Now i've seen many threads here listing many benefits but its not clear whether u get those extra features from the custom roms or just from being rooted. So i was to root my phone and then leave the stock rom on, what extra would i be able to do?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI haven't really been into the whole rooting thing, I need some advice. I don't know what the benefits of rooting my phone are, I have a HTC Hero from sprint. Any info that is provided will truly help me. I know that there are many ways to root but some of them don't work well and so on ect.
View 15 Replies View RelatedSince many of us have rooted, installed Roms and have just about every app/aspect of the new 2.1 OS, what will actually be better or even is better by running 2.1? I know flash support will be 2.1-based, but haven't really heard of anything else that many of us do not already have, save maybe a truly functional 2.1 launcher. I do know it's not worth losing root over to even try(to me anyway), so I will most likely wait for a cooked 2.1 ROM after the official release. I'm a little leery of running a "leaked" OS.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm using Droidmod and am trying to figure out why I'd want to move to something like Bugless Beast or some of the other 'much talked about' roms. I've got a very stable system. Don't have the 2.1 launcher but heard there's problems with it anyway. I have wireless wifi tethering and wired if I want it. Am using Smoked Glass theme which I really like. I have downloaded some live wallpaper but they eat battery life so don't bother with them. Am OC to 800 stable,1k if I want and when it's plugged in. Have the 'pinch to zoom' browser and gallery. Just what am I missing with these other roms? I cannot see a benefit to jumping to one from this. I'm trying but it just doesn't seem worth the hassle or the risk of getting a unstable platform.
View 11 Replies View RelatedWhat are the benefits to my D1 if I transfer all of my apps to the SD card? I once tried it, and immediately after my phone started to lag REALLY bad , so I put everything back on the internal memory.
I assume I did something wrong , and would like to know the correct way to do it and why I should.
There's a lot of posting going on about removing bloatware, but, other than un-cluttering the apps drawer, what are the benefits over just leaving them in place and not invoking them?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI rooted me Droid X. I want to know if I can move the files:

Ive been rooted for a while. I am going to root my friends phone. Its been a while since I first rooted and was wondering if there was a new way to get ROM Manager on 2.1 OTA. IS there an easier way to get ROM Manager on the phone besides flashing the SBF file which gives you SPR recovery , then flashing a rooted ROM, then installing ROM Magager, then finally installing the ROM that you really wanted in the first place?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI bought (and rec'd on Monday) the Seidio super-honking-big extended battery. All day yesterday and today (until I could get home and swap it out), I was getting false indications of low battery that would get "fixed" upon reboot, yet 2-3 hours later it would again indicate that it's low. Here's a thread on it in the regular Droid forum:
Battery meter won't accurately read the long-life Seidio battery.I'm holding out very faint hope that a ROM junkie might now of a work around. I'm currently intending on putting a rooted 2.1 on my phone, but I'll gladly deviate to something else if it'll fix this problem.
I did a search but did not find anything directly applicable to my situation. My apologies if I missed it.My Droid is currently running Android 2.1 update 1.I had previously rooted under Android 2.0.1, but I inadvertently installed the Verizon automatic system update, which took away root privileges. (Incidentally, is there a way to disable automatic updates? Before my slip-up, I had been canceling the dialog box for over a week.)I tried the method described in this post and it seemed to work, but I can't execute "su" from the terminal emulator console. I have the superuser permissions ninja under apps, but I also had it after the forced Verizon update. I suspect this is a vestige of the previous rooting.
I would be immensely grateful if someone could direct me to instructions on how to EITHER: A) download everything necessary to revert to 2.0.1, use the root exploit, and then upgrade to a rooted version of 2.1, OR B) root my current installation of 2.1.Also, if you could recommend a good ROM with wireless tethering, that's be icing on the cake.
I am interested in rooting my Droid X and I want to know the best way to to it on Mac OSX. Most of the tutorials out there are for the PC, can anyone give me a step in the right direction?

View 7 Replies View RelatedIm sure there's a thread on how to root using osx but im just not seeing it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm rooted, and swap roms, backup everything pretty confidently (thanks again to Joe for helping me get in the pool).
But there are some things I don't understand. I really want to go to a 2.1 ROM. I've tried a few with verying degrees of happyness, and some of the later ones I've tried just send me through enless reboot cycles. I've tried Pete's new one (figuring if anybody put out something dependable it would be him) and though it boots up FAST and runs great, after playing around for a while it sends me through reboot cycles and freezes up.
I always follow all instructions to the "T", so it makes no sense that others are having success when I am not. Is there some other process that I have to go through that are just unspoken "common sense" steps among the more advanced users that aren't outlined in install instructions? Or am I just supposed to let the phone do it's thing for a while after installing? It just makes me nervouse when it is looping through 3-5 reboots in a row.
Does rooting and installing ROMs void my warranty and insurrance I have with my Motorola Droid?
How exactly do I root the Droid?
How do I install ROMs?
Are there any ROMs recommended to try?
What are the feature differences of a vanilla 2.2 ROM and BuglessBeast?
I'm looking into putting a Rom on my OTA 2.2 Droid. After doing a bit of searching it seems like you can only do install SPRecovery and whatnot only via Linux or Windows.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWahoo first post! I've had an account for a while but have been lurking and soaking up information. I'm going to root my phone (hopefully today) but I am running Linux on all my PCs, and do not actually have a windows install. I wanted to ask if anyone knew if the ADB commands can just be run straight from a terminal window from my Linux box, since it seems ADB is just a terminal emulator on windows to be able to talk to the phone. It seems like I'm missing something though, I would think ADB would do more than that but let me know if I'm in the wrong. I'd like to root my phone from my Linux box but if i need to find a windows machine I could probably do it from work. I was trying to find some sort of tutorial for ADB on Linux but could not find anything, even installed the SDK for Linux and have access to ADB but am not sure how to get ADB to see my phone after going through the tutorials. I would not be surprised if I missed something as I can be a little dense at times.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am able to hear everyone just fine but nobody can hear me (mic isn't working). It only works if I use speaker, but then everyone can hear my conversation. I tried rebooting, flashing different roms, removing battery but nothing solved the problem. I have recently got a refurb and I'm getting another one in the mail in 2 days, and don't want to root if it's causing problems with in-call sound. Also had flashed the froyo baseband, i don't know if this did anything cause I don't know if basebands affect the microphone?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there ANYTHING I should know? I've been reading this page here How to: Root Android 2.2 for the Motorola DROID - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog and it looks really REALLY simple..
Once I go through ALL that process on that page above would I be able to use a custom rom on my phone and such?
I'm new to the phone and not particularly computer savvy. I've been doing my homework and research about rooting and I was wondering... a friend mentioned that when Verizon releases an upgrade to Android OS 2.1 (Flan), Android will likely remove the exploit that allows for rooting. If that is the case, you will not be able to root in the future. But if I rooted now I would always be able to. He also mentioned if I rooted I would lose the ability to upgrade to 2.1 over the air and would have to download the upgrade via a computer and USB. Is this true?
