Motorola Droid :: Tethering - Violation Of TOS?
Mar 24, 2010
So I'm pretty sure that I understood tethering was a violation of contract. Well I just saw a commercial for verizon and the palm preadvertising that it can tether up to 5 devices, so what's up with that??

After getting comfy with the Android 2.0 environment and emulator (for the most part), I took the next step to bind <myapp> against the latest Android 2.0 jars: android.jar and maps.jar. The existing code (working in Android 1.6) did not need any changes to compile, but the app doesn't build due to a weird error message that prevents the build. See snippet below, drawn from the Eclipse Console. I have no aspirations to run up against any core library classes, and I am not aware I do. In other words, I am not implementing SealedObject (or any other core class that I am aware of) that would run up against Dalvik. Not in the javax, java or any other namespace. Anybody got any pointers what's going on here?......

On the Wireless tethering app for root users only, how many MB, would be considered too much and would catch too much attention at risk of being caught.

Just upgraded from DInc to X this week. Rooted - all that fun stuff. Had AP tethering on DInc, I'm still getting adHoc with X even with version 2.0.5-pre 7. Is anyone else getting AP tethering or do we need to wait for the froyo kernal? I had originally thought any phone with the VZW wifi hotspot app had AP tethering capabilities in its kernal already.

After not being able to get "android wifi tether" to work with my iPad, I downloaded Barnacle from the market and it is working flawlessly. Didn't see many threads mentioning this app for root users. It looks pretty robust and pulling about 2gbs and 400kb up. Will update post with any problems or other remarks. Anyone else using this?

I am running the smoked glass 4.5 and its not stable at all anymore plus I have heard good things about the 2.1 update. So I am pondering the idea of checking it out. Now if I do this, will I be able to get WiFi tethering on there at all? For free of course.

1. Can I password protect my droid like i could with a normal router? (WEP or something to that affect?) and
2. will verizon notice extreme usage of bandwith on my data plan from tethering too much? Supposedly our data plans are limited to 5gb a month even though they say its 'unlimited'. I don't think I'll use it all that much because i'll only use it in the event that I really need it and have no wifi access.

I figuered out how to tether with the phone. Pair the phone via Bluetooth and go to "Show Bluetooth Devices" and "connect using" and then "access point. Now you have tethered with Bluetooth.

I have the wifi widget loaded onto my phone but cannot figure it out from there. Is there something I have to do to my laptop. Please run the step as if you were teaching a 3 year old.

I am rooted on the Droid 1 with a stock FRG22D kernel and ROM.I downloaded WiFi Tether from the Market.I tried it out on several different laptops using different Windows OS.It appears to work great as long as Access Control (MAC Filtering) and WEP are turned off.If either is activated, all data transfer ceases. Other posts have also noted this issue which appears to be associated with the stock FRG22D kernel. My question is has anyone flashed a Froyo P3 or other kernal that will allow Access Control or WEP to work as intended with the stock FRG22D ROM. I am happy with the stock kernel and ROM but will consider switching if I can find a compatable kernel or other configuration.Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I've just installed Bugless Beast 0.7.5 yesterday (loving it so far, OC'd to 800mhz), but the wifi tether is running very slow. I'm using the Wireless Tether for Root Users app, and I'm getting terrible speeds.Speeds I'm getting are: 634kbps down, 106kbps up. Is this normal or is something wrong with my setup?

I rooted my phone about a month ago using BB v1.0 and loving it.The major reason I rooted was for the wifi tether. My situation might be a bit different than other people that are using wifi tether, since I'm connecting to my car (www.mp3car.com).Using the app wifi tether, I can easily connect to a network manually, but everytime I turn off my car, it obviously looses connection. When I turn my car back on,I have to MANUALLY reconnect.I am using Windows 7 and have created the profile that's supposed to reconnect automatically, but it never does.I believe that since this isn't a real wifi hotspot and just an adhoc network, that this automatic connection isn't possible with just Windows 7 networking settings.Has anyone had any success getting your wifi tether to automatically connect to their laptop when you turn it on?

My first droid died recently (RIP), and thankfully the insurance did have droid 1's to replace it (refurb). My original had the raised keyboard, this one doesn't. Otherwise seems the same--except: under Settings-->Wifi and Networks is a tab called "Tethering." So I plugged it into my computer, turned on USB Tether, and yet I couldn't seem to get internet from the phone's data service. Is this a weird, non-working foyo feature?

Stock Droid 2.2 tethered to Ubuntu 10.04. I can tether it and get good speeds and can surf around with no problem. When I launch Transmission (a bittorrent client) tethering shuts down after a few minutes. It doesn't disconnect but just stops transferring data...web pages won't even load. I have tried to limit the speeds of upload and download but nothing seems to work. I am using the tether option under settings- wi-fi on the Droid. Is there a limit in the droid for data or something like that?

This new release (1/12/2010) is significant because it brings about a few significant changes:
1) Default over/underclock of 600MHz when under load, and only 125MHz when idle. The lower idle frequency should make up for the higher battery usage at load.
2) Wifi tethering is now enabled by default, as the new overclock kernel has the files needed for it.
3) The new kernel also allocates an additional 65MB of space for a swap file, making the overall speed greatly improved.
For these advantages, there are a couple of things 'broken':
1) Only auto brightness works (you cannot set your own brightness level)
2) No WEP encryption for the wireless tether (this is inherent in the wifi tether program, not the ROM)
I've been using this for a couple of hours now, and so far, so good. Everything is still optimized a la birdman, and the additional swap memory allows for speedier transitions between memory hogging applications (i.e. from gallery to browser to home screen, etc).I won't be able to gauge the battery life, obviously, until I've had some more time with it. Still, overall, it seems speedier than both the original Sholes.info 1.0 RC, and birdman's V4, which before this, IMO, was the best ROM available.Anyways, the ROM can be found both at alldroid and at sholes.info. I won't be providing any links.Other adventurous flashers can use this thread to discuss this ROM. This may be the last great 2.0.1/2.1 ROM, as now that 2.1 is open sourced, I expect developers to flock towards that.
