Just wondering if anyone has found a good app to keep track of data usage. Curious because I know Verizon only allows 5gigs and want to keep track of my usage to better manage it. I use a lot of data because im tethering my droid to my desktop for internet - saves me $35 a month, no more giving comcast money for internet.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've noticed a few people have complained about high standby data usage.. ie when you leave the phone on a desk, with nothing streaming, you still manage to use up 1-2mb per hour (as I was!). This is a big problem for people moving from something like a blackberry where it was hard to use up a lot of data even if you tried.I tried disabling as much as possible to see what was causing the problem (NetSentry was great for tracking usage but of course can't tell you which programs/services are using it up), and after exhausting all ideas I tried deleting the two non-GMail email accounts I had. On was set up as push Exchange, and the other a 15-minute polling POP account. I have to assume it was the Exchange that was the problem, but I can't be sure. In any case, my usage dropped from about 4MB over 3 hours to about 12kB for the last 3 hours since I disabled the accounts.In conclusion, email can be more of a problem than you think! I'm going to forward my other accounts through my GMail to see if that works better.

The plan I intend on signing up for is the Telus Student 40 and that will come with only 100mb of data. Now I don't see myself being too data using heavy so I feel like I will be able to live with it. However I do have some questions regarding my data consumption.
1. Is it possible to completely stop all data usage by somehow disabling the data connection if I find myself reaching my limit?
2. What are ways to track my data usage to make sure I don't use too much data?
3. What are good ways to conserve data usage? I'm getting the feeling that there are some applications that will constantly be sending data back and forth updating themselves, is it possible to have these applications but stop them from constantly updating and only have them update when I want to access the application?.........

I love Sprint's true unlimited data.Switched from Att and the iphone after they changed the data plans. I was leaning towards the EVO anyway, but the new data plan was the nail in the coffin.I work night shift half the time and abuse tethering on my laptop while working nights.I pay for the hotspot app (i know i could root and do it for free but don't mind the fee considering how much i use).My first month (4 days left in the billing cycle) 21 gigs and change. And to just think, my city is getting 4G later this year and it will only be faster.

View 8 Replies View Relatedwell the last couple days, my phone has been using data almost every second. i dont have the facebook widget, flickr or friendstream, only the weather one. my mail is set for every 5 minutes. i checked spare parts, it didnt show any apps using a large amount of data. i havent installed any new apps this week, so it shouldnt be a new app, though it could be an existing one.

I am a moderately heavy web user (although I don't really have anyone to compare to, but I check the internet a lot during the day out of sheer boredom at work) and he by all means is not.Can somebody explain what exactly eats data and how it works? We are mostly just curious and are guessing it's an app. But *what* is doing it? Like does it draw data from the internet or something? Is that app updating or refreshing? The only thing I know about data is like if you refresh a page on the internet, then data is used. I refreshed a website twice and my usage according to 3d watchdog jumped about 1mb. Is that normal? Is it also normal for there to be data usage while your phone is asleep?

The only two market apps I've found, TrafficInfo and TrafficStats, both require Android 2.2 which of course isn't an option for us (yet).I had been fine but recently have seen my data usage skyrocket from 500-600MB per month to 200-300MB per DAY and yesterday over 500MB. At this rate I am going to blow through my 2GB only 11 days into my monthly billing cycle.

Are there any inbuilt classes ya methods that help to count the number of bytes sent/received. I'm trying to develop a light weight browser and am doing this as an option. As mobile users are charged based on the bytes they browse. I think this is a mandatory requirement but the more I google it The less I find?

I don't get a great signal at work as I'm out in the sticks and when at home I'm connected to wi-fi so there's no big issue there. I'd be surprised if I went over the allowance to be honest. There will be times, however, where I'm away from wi-fi for a while and I'll be using the 3G connection more than usual. In this case are there any ways/apps that can help monitor usage and minimise it? I heard one of the browsers has the ability to compress images on websites but wanted to find out if anyone has anything they do to get the most out of their data allowance.

Is that some catch-all meaning "anything which doesn't fall under something else", or is it something more specific which I could easily control? Most of the usage seems to be software updates, and google play store updates, and a few other apps being updated. Can it not wait to do those updates until wi fi is available to save my data. I'm with Orange btw, and the local wi fi netwrok is with O2.

View 1 Replies View RelatedNot sure if many of you have been following threads out there about very high data usage on standby - my experience.I went from using 5mb - 10mb a day to 100mb/day.Unbelieveable.I tried searching for everything I could to figure it out - all the way from Location Setting swithed on to Facebook having a Calendar sync'ing glitch where it perpetually sync'd - never stopped.Hence racked up Mb's.The problem, I believe, for my phone was the Gmail constantly sync'ing. I guess i have a few emails with large attachments - 3-5mbs. I thought once it sync'd it to my phone, it would not reload them. I had sync on every hour - so every hour - 5mbs were used.Needless to say, i have stopped the auto sync of my Gmail its on manual now, and better yet i will just be using IMAP instead of Push email, and the problem has been solved.
I am now back to normal use of 5mbs per day 10mb on the high side.And that is with Twitter constant, internet, Push to Talk, and World War game to name a few.If you dont follow your data usage, i highly recommend you do. There are horror stories out there of people having to pay $1000 extra. I will be owing prob an extra $50.00 or more due to this issue.(In Canada here on Bell Carrier monthly limit is 500mb) I recommend downloading 3G watchdog - really good at monitoring data.Anyway, just wanted to share this story, as I dont think there has been an HTC Legend thread. And that is the phone I have.
I just get my Xperia X10 and need to know a few questions about the data usage. I am orange Dolphin 15 plan I get 250mb of internet usage per month. If I am at home using wifi does that use 250mb which I am allowed each month? I use face book and the auto update time scape thing. How much MB will that use? Will I only be able to use time scape with 3g or can I use 2g to get updates aswell?
