My app has a tabhost with four tabs, and now I'm trying to make nice layouts for landscape mode. In order to make use of additional horizontal space I want to put TabWidget at the right side of the screen, and of cource all tabs must be one under another (like in a column).
But when switching to landscape mode all tabs get aligned in a row, it looks quite ugly. How to fix that?
Screenshot is here: http://imgur.com/gPS1R.png
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<TabHost xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="@android:id/tabhost"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent" >
<LinearLayout
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent">
<FrameLayout
android:id="@android:id/tabcontent"
android:layout_width="wrap_content"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_weight="1">
<include layout="@layout/filter_wizard"/>
<include layout="@layout/filter_wizard"/>
<include layout="@layout/filter_wizard"/>
<include layout="@layout/filter_wizard"/>
</FrameLayout>
<TabWidget
android:background="#75ffffff"
android:id="@android:id/tabs"
android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:orientation="vertical"
</LinearLayout>
</TabHost>

Does anyone know how to make a dialog fill the screen width in landscape mode? Setting the layout's width to fill_parent doesn't do it. It always comes up portrait width, or something suspiciously similar.

I got my Droid 2 (or as it is called in Germany Milestone 2) just this week. I got two minor things that are bugging me. (see the other one here Is it possible to reconfigure the keyboard?) Otherwise I'm loving my new phone. I got the auto-adjust option for the Display turned on but for some reason the screen won't switch to the landscape mode as long as I don't pull out the physical keyboard. That is only the case for the homescreens and the main app menu. Otherwise it works fine. For example, if I open the settings I get to look at them in landscape mode with the keyboard in our out.

Any idea how to get landscape mode to work when the top of the phone is pointing to the right instead of only to the left? I see to be having this issue today.

Do you use landscape or portrait mode? And which keyboard do you use to post, virtual or real, since the virtual one hides the screen for some reason? I posted this from my Droid, just to prove to myself that I could real keyboard, big hands no problemo. Few typos, but easily fixed. No worse than I do on a life-size keyboard at home.Droid looks to be about the size of a busines card next to my big thumb. I can still somehow peck the keys fairly quick.

I discovered something unusual today. I've been using a lot of the physical keyboard, especially for long winded texts and e-mails. I have tried and tried to get used to the landscape on-screen keyboard to no avail. I've tried Better Keyboard (and yes, it's better), and the HTC keyboard (that unfortunately doesn't fill the screen). They both have their benefits, but I cannot accurately and consistently type out a message on any of them. My problems: If I type too fast, half of the letters don't register. I've tried pressing harder, using a lighter touch, neither had any affect. I can't get used to the position I need to have my thumb in to actually register clicking certain letters on the keyboard. I always think I've got it, but then I look up at what I just typed (I find myself staring at the keys I'm pressing to make sure they're the right ones) and it is complete gibberish. Where I'm going with this, anyways, is the portrait keyboard. I used it a few times today just out of laziness, I didn't feel like turning the screen or opening up the device to use the physical. I noticed something unusual; I don't make the same mistakes on this tiny little keyboard, and I can actually type relatively quickly. My sentences weren't coming out meaningless, and I wasn't seeing unregistered presses. So my question to you is this - has anybody else noticed similar problems? I don't really think it's a fault of the phone. I think I'm just not used to on-screen keyboards (never used one before) and thus cannot type well on it. I'm hoping that - at some point - a multi-touch enabled keyboard comes out, because I feel like some of my problems are due to hitting two keys in rapid succession, and having one or both not register. Until then, I will continue to practice with it, but I just can't figure out why I can type on the tiny portrait keyboard and not on the full landscape version.

Why is it that certain apps or websites don't work in landscape mode and your forced to type whatever with one finger in the portrait mode? Point in case the Google quick search will not switch to landscape mode when you turn the phone sideways.

I cant get the browser to automatically change orientation as I change my phone's orientation. The only time it goes into landscape mode is if I pull out the physical keyboard. Note that I don't want to select The option to always force landscape mode.

As we all know the droid's d-pad is located under the screen on the slider. I just wonder has anyone ever come to a situation where an app or a game needs a d-pad, but doesn't support the landscape mode, so you have no choice but to use the phone in portrait with the slider open.
and in that case would the "up" button(in landscape mode) become the "right" button, or does it still recognize it as an UP button? Is it comfortable to hold the phone that way?
I could imagine some games that are designed for the Hero/magic would require you to use the d-pad/trackball.

I'd like to be able to turn my Droid clockwise and view landscape mode. I don't see why this isn't standard in the OS. Is there a way to do this? By the way, I'm new and you can consider me a very active member starting now.

Anyone else having this problem?I'm not talking about portrait vs landscape for the home screen.When I'm using the web browser on Droid, it seems stuck in landscape mode and try as I may to move the phone around, I cannot get it to switch to portrait mode when using the web browser.With some other apps, such as email, it seems to switch between landscape and portrait when I rotate the Droid.And with yet some others, like Calendar, it seems to switch sometimes and other times NOT respond.But the browser is the one I'm finding most annoying.why won't it switch from landscape to portrait?Anyone else experiencing this glitch? Any solutions?

I love using my DROID in the OEM Car Dock. I have it setup in landscape mode, but I'm seriously thinking of reconsidering this. More-or-less, because I have to. Every app seems to work great in landscape mode all, except for one, that is. The phone app. What's up with that?Go ahead, try it! Open up the phone app (displaying the dial pad), and turn the DROID on it's side nu thin'! Now open the hardware keyboard. Isn't that a hoot? I would love to know how you're supposed to dial a phone when there isn't any dial pad. In my honest opinion, this is one of the biggest over-sights with the DROID and I have yet to hear anyone mention this issue on this forum, or any other forums. NOTE: Scroll down to post # 16 for an update.

I tried it and it works so far.
Dev = ne0fhyk from XDA.
From the XDA forum: Link to app page = [APP][ROOT/Keyboard] Keyboard Manager - Dual keyboard: Portrait/landscape switch - xda-developers
Verbage:
Keyboard Manager allows you to customize what keyboard (input method) appear on input based on your phone orientation.
It displays the keyboards you have enabled on your android device, and let you select one per orientation (landscape/portrait).
As your phone switch orientation, the app automatically switch the keyboard.
Requirements:
- Rooted android device (app was tested on Samsung captivate 2.1)
- Root Explorer app, or similar app that allows you to edit the permissions of a file.
To install:
1- Download the app (KeyboardManager.apk) on your device sdcard.
2- Using Root Explorer, move the apk file to /system/app
3- Using Root Explorer, edit the file permissions like below:
-- User: 'Read/Write' checked
--Group: 'Read' checked
--Others: 'Read' checked
4- Exit Root Explorer
The app should be visible in your launcher as 'Keyboard Manager'
Update:
- Added option to disable notification icon
-' start on boot' feature is disabled because it's not yet complete and tested... Sorry for the confusion
Bugs:
-On certain applications (i.e: Messaging on Samsung Captivate), the input window occasionally freeze on orientation switch. Exiting the app, and resuming should fix it.
The app is still in development.

I recently installed it and there as few problems I can't seem to solve:
1. There is no option to resize widgets. It is supposed to support it, but there is just no way. Whether in Free mode or not. How to do it?
2. In the app drawer, many apps are displayed twice, some apps don't appear at all, and there are some apps that I don't even have installed...

The widgets on my Cube U9GT 2 tablet running on Android 4.0.3 / Ice Cream Sandwich are huge. Please check out the attached screenshots.
I am using the default ICS launcher. I could not resize them by tapping and holding - there would not be any widget resize handles. I would like to "hack" the config files to shrink these widgets to a more sensible size.

there are those of us, who due to whatever reason (helmet cams, preference for posture, etc) want to record videos in portrait mode.
What happens (on my sgs2) is that the video records just fine in whatever resolution I pick... but it records it 90 degrees rotated to the right.
The solution that is usually offered is that "you can rotate it after!" yes... but then you have to CROP part of the image and lower the resolution. 1920 x 1080 recordings end up having to be cropped so that half of the view is cut out , or even more if you are maintaining a real aspect ratio.
The questions about "why not just hold it sideways", are just as pointless as the statement by steve jobs telling iphone4 users that they were holding their phones wrong.
is this something that can be remedied ? or has google decided that people should only record videos when their phones are in landscape mode?
i understand that we cant see landscape resolution in portrait mode; but can't we just have a viewport into the camera, but record in properly oriented landscape mode? so that playback on a computer will show the full resolution, even though we will only see part of it on the phone..

I just unlocked/rooted/installed Cyanogen on my Motorola Atrix. I'm looking for a theme that will make menus black-on-white instead of the default white-on-black. The closest that I've found is the JAMT White theme, but the settings screen is still all white-on-black, even in the paid version.
