Motorola Droid :: Advantage Of Pushing Apps To System / Apps?
Apr 20, 2010Is there any real benefit for pushing apps to the system/apps in terms of speed/stability?

View 4 RepliesI just rooted my stock 2.1 Droid and am playing with all things I now have access to. I realize I can now delete just about anything in the /system folder. I have already removed a few stock apps (like the Visual Voicemail). I suppose I could also remove unused wallpapers, sounds, etc., but would freeing up this space offer any benefit?
View 2 Replies View RelatedAre there any apps that take advantage of the new immerse mode? I just flashed the factory images on my nexus 4 but none of my apps have support for it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhich apps that are considered bloatware are required to have system app permissions? I removed a few and I want to set their permissions correctly but I dont want to screw up and possibly brick.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI run the risk of getting flamed for this... but I deem it a worthy thread, as things are constantly changing. I haven't found an up-to-date thread that has satisfied me yet.
I recently joined the Android community with my purchase of the Moto Droid. After a few days, I became interested in the rooting process and gave it a go... upgrading to Froyo. There have been several ROMs I've tried out, but I'm very hesitant to try more due to backups.
Will somebody provide me (in words or a link) the best way to backup all of my applications and data when testing out a new ROM? I tried Titanium Backup (and even donated), yet I never have successfully restored from a backup. Some applications and system data restore, but a ton of apps don't install, and I have to re-enter my email accounts (and appropriate sync settings) every time. This and the number of apps it doesn't restore (especially Swype) makes it not worth messing around with.
I read something about Nandroid backup, but that just looked like it was a backup in case something went terribly wrong with a ROM or something of the sort. Also, it looked like in the Simply Stunning (ChevyNo1) 4.2, there was a built in backup script... but I'd like to be able to venture between ROMs.
I want to be able to backup all of my apps and system data (gmail accounts, sms, etc), install a new ROM, and reload all of my apps and data.
My current mobile phone is an LG/Sprint Optimus S, whose camera has 3.2 mpx resolution. My previous (and first) smart phone was an HTC Pure which runs Windows Mobile 6.5 and is perhaps better known as the Topaz, Pure being its AT&T edition. The camera on that phone does 5.0 mpx, so it's obviously much better. Even on just the small device screens, you can see the quality difference at a glance.
For a particular objective, I need to be able to take good pictures on the go, but have the Internet connection provided by my current Android device. In other words, I want to take pictures with the HTC, beam them to my Optimus, and then use that to send out the pictures. I was having a bit of trouble getting the devices to work well together in their native states, so I flashed a version of Froyo onto the old HTC. Having done that, I found that the Bluetooth connection between the devices worked quite well. But when I try to use one of the Android camera apps to take pictures on the HTC, it's not taking full advantage of the lens' capability. The photos show up on the screen about the size of a large postage stamp; in fact not much bigger than a thumbnail picture.
Do Android camera apps not work at any better resolution than 3.2?
I have recently purchased an unlocked HTC Desire. As you may or may not know, here in Australia the only carrier of the Desire is Telstra. However I use 3 mobile so that's the reason I purchased an unlocked device.
My problem is that my phone has about a dozen or more apps which are installed by Telstra and uninstallable. Most of them are 100% useless because I'm not even on their network and I'd like them out of my applications list.
I've had a read around and I saw something about being able to remove them by deleting the file and then uninstalling them using a command prompt program.
Would anyone please be able to give me detailed instructions on how to do this because I'm not sure how to find the system/apps folder and I'm also not sure on how to get the command prompt thing to work.
Is it ok? Will there be problems in the future or not?

I do not recall one of my apps (Places) ever being there before and its not in the manage app area so i can delete it. Does anyone else have this app?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI know the "cool kid in school" thing to do is make fun of the iPhone market for having 1,000's of 'Fart apps'
But let's be honest at the end of the day it's really not true, and now coming from being a previous iPhone owner and now a Droid owner i can honestly say, the iPhone app market wins by a TON.
This is just a general QUALITY of apps comparison as well.
NO i'm not switching back... but man do i miss the iPhone apps...
Especially facebook.. and others..
You can REALLY tell the difference between the quality of iPhone apps vs Android,
So why am i starting this thread?.. Well i'm hoping maybe a developer could chime in and enlighten us on why this is...
Things i'm curious about-
Is programming in android worse then in the iPhone OS? is that why apps are WAY less in quality?
And you can't give the excuse that it's because things are new, when the iPhone market came out the apps were quality at day 1, many of them were.
So what's the difference? i guess software...
Well i'm sticking with android even though this exists.. in hopes that maybe future Android OS updates and SDK's will improve this very obvious difference.. right now i'm not impressed at all... the apps are all Slow, and they look horrible.
And for twitter? holy crap... iPhone owners back me up here, but the iPhone twitter apps are lightyears ahead of android twitter apps.
Just take a look at Tweetdeck for iPhone, and compare to to what i guess is the best android twitter app, twidroid?
Compare those and you'll see what i'm talking about.
is it ok to push apk file to system/app by root explorer to a odexed rom?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI currently have a rooted 2.0.1 Droid, and I was wondering if there's any advantage to "upgrading" to 2.1 and then rooting, or would that just get me back to where I started?
View 21 Replies View RelatedWhat are the differences and/or advantages to using Wireless Tether vs. "hacked" 3G Hotspot, which I've been seeing people talk about recently? I was under the impression that Wireless Tether is a free option for wireless hotspot capability - is using the hacked 3G hotspot less detectible or something?
View 4 Replies View Relatedi tried installing a themed news and weather widget to system/app and it's not working properly. it's not showing up on the phone under widgets or in the app launcher. it's not showing up in root explorer in system/app even though it said it was pasted there. it shows up in applications in the settings menu but force closes when clicked on. i also can't install it in data now either. so right now the app is kind of in limbo.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWas reading a thread over at XDA talking about moving certain apps from data/app to system/app to help them run faster, or not get killed by Autokiller (don't even use that)... anyway, I opened up EStrongs File Explorer with root enabled, and it appears all of my apps are in system/app as opposed to data/app. Is that normal? I am currently on xtrROM 4.6 and used Titanium to restore my apps.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I have been messing around a bit and am really enjoying my phone. I want to keep it nearly stock, so am running OMJ's Evo ROM, which I am happy with.
I have been toying with what system apps (read bloatware, etc.) I can delete without comprimising anything.
I've been using Titanium Pro to freeze things before deleting them.
What programs have you removed without tanking your phone?
Here is whatr I have taken off without any promblems:
Peep
Footprints w/widget
Stocks w/widget
Car Panel
FM Radio w/widget
When I freeze the gmail app though my CPU runs higher and drains my battery.
I have a question about some removed apps from a Gingerbread os. I can't seem to find any real Detailed info on these 8 files below. I want to know what each one is what it does and if they rely on others to be installed, and mostly do they need to be/should they be installed:
Dun.apk
FactoryTest.apk
InputEventApp.apk
JobManager.apk[code]....
To those who have rooted their Desire, this may sound a bit odd, but just humour me, rooting my phone, mainly because Im very paranoid about getting it wrong, and also it seems like a hell of a lot of fiddling for little gain. The only benefit I really want from rooting is to remove the dumbass demo apps Telstra installed. Is is possible to remove those apps on an un-rooted Desire? Would I be correct in saying that ADB could do it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed modacco's r9 ROM and chose the brut modifies the maps app. however I don't see how it has added anything. I want to revert to the stock maps application so I can get updates through the market etc... is it possible to do this without having to reinstall the Rom all over again?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI was digging through the apps stored in /system, and noticed "googleapps.apk". Anyone know what exactly that's for, and can it be removed?
also, can "flickr", "navigator", "talk", "voice dialer", "voice recorder", and "voice search" be removed as well? I'm guessing yes, but just want to confirm.
I finaly have app to as working on the custom rom but certain apps were not moved after I flashed does anyone know the root commands to push apps from the system to the sd ?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWe are trying to automate our QA process. We make wallpaper apps for Android. Once an app is installed, is there a way to figure out if the application is running since these have apps don't have a main class which we can check by doing a ps on android shell. I think keyboard/language apps would face a similar issue
For eg. If I install tetris and run it. Its main package will show up in shell ps. xyz.abc.Tetris. But the same is not true system apps in android.
In an effort to keep my battery from draining from dodgy apps, yesterday I installed a CPU and battery monitor called "Mini Info". After getting my DHD and going on an app installing rampage my battery life dropped to about 6 hours, and I think it was the monitor!
So I've un-installed I'm looking for some system tools that won't sap my battery life.
Can anyone suggest to me:
Battery Monitor
CPU monitor (that displays what processes are killing my CPU)
Task killer (using ATK)
A widget I can use to easily turn bluetooth/wireless/GPS etc that includes 3G as well...
Also... someone mentioned before an app that changes your settings based on your location (looks at location with GPS). Can anyone tell me what this is called and if it saves more battery than it uses?
More specifically I want to edit the Settings.apk and add more options. I'm unsure what the best approach to this is. I know how to convert the classes.dex to a .jar, but this doesn't seem like the way to go about accomplishing anything. At any rate, I'm really looking for some insight into this and advanced editing such as this. Someone knows how to, care to share?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am curious about necessity of stock apps..
i.e I want to know ,
Which stock apps can be uninstalled ..
i.e which apps aren't necessary for system to run ..
ex. I hv deleted some apps like Youtube , +G etc..
My current custom ROM includes Youtube v4.0.5. Market shows "installed" and latest avaliabvle is v4.1.23. An update isn't offered. Next I convert it into user app in TiBu. I go to the Youtube entry in market again, re-install and presto I have the shiny new Youtube. I assume the reason an update wasnt offered initially was because the app was a system app. So this makes me wonder if there's any automated solution that scans through systems apps and checks if an updated version is avaliable? I'm aware of the risks involved and I keep backups.
