Mobile Apps Template With Data Connector?
Nov 3, 2011
My friend and I have an idea for an app we'd like to create but neither of us have ever programmed in Android before. We'd like this app to pull data from a database (perhaps a mysql database hosted on one of our servers).
Any basic mobile app template for Android that pulls data from an external database?

Today I was trying to download and update some apps via wifi but later I discovered that it was on mobile data and I received message from Operator/Carrier that I have crossed my data pack limit and using it further will be chargeable. Is there any way to stop or prevent downloading apps when phone is using Data Pack?

Not for security, just to stop mobile data internet from reaching some apps. I need to set it by multiple configuration too.

Current version of Android (4.2.2).
Want to: run apps that demand to have WiFi on+connected, even when I'm on 3G/4G. (Specifically, I'd be happy if I could get Xfinity TV Player to run on my rooted stock Nexus 4 over HSPA, but again, hoping this thread will attract info about tricking apps in the general case.)
Tried:
A) qaWifiOnlyMode.txt,
B) running WiFi Tether For Root Users and quickly turning wifi on after launching. Neither worked.

My eris has always has pretty alright battery life, what I would expect out of a smartphone, if unplugged at 9AM it usually was running on its last leg around midnight. I've had it for over 5 months now, I've always had it activated on alltel, I installed the 2.1v3 leak before the official OTA was out and just lately it seems like there something very wrong with my battery life...
If I unplug my phone at 9AM within the past week and occasionaly check and respond to a text message, my battery had been down to almost 30% by NOON... what?..
I have noticed that if I disable Mobile Network (3g/1x data), the thing lasts all day and some... If I turn mobile network ON, I can't see that I have any network traffic or any apps running in the background that are syncing data at all... I've had google account sync mess up on me before and have to reset my google account because it gets stuck in a syncing loop, but its not doing that, already checked. Very weird.
Anyone thing it could be something wrong in my ##PROGRAM#/##778# provisioning menu, maybe something got changed?.. Maybe it could be do to Alltel's AT&T merger that's happening right now, maybe some 3G tower's radios are turned off or something...

Can anyone help explain what this does? I did a small search around the internet, and it came up with just about nothing. My first question is: I turned mobile data off, and yet, during the night, I was charged for data, so something leaked.Personally, I thought if this was because of this particular function. But maybe it was something else. So, I turned it off, but around the forums for other androids people seem to think that syncing doesn't work as well with this disabled.Does anybody know what might have happened? And could this function have been the thing that caused the leak. The leak, was actually for only 50 KB or so, but because I'm on Page Plus, it caused me to go under the required balance to refill of $29.95 and caused my plan to lapse. It's important for me for this not to happen again. Can anyone give any tips?

If "always on mobile data" is disabled, will this have any affect on programs that are set to auto sync with back ground data enabled(Face book, twitter etc)? I'm trying to work it out but lots of people say different things?

What is the difference between these two:Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Enable always-on mobile data
- Description: "Uses more power on some mobile networks"
- Message after disabling: "Attention: Disabling always on mobile data may cause connectivity problems in some applications. Please use the manual refresh feature in applications to update online data" Settings > Accounts & sync > Background data
- Seems to be the same as the 4th toggle in the Power Control widget
- Description: "Applications can sync, send, and receive data at any time"
- Message after disabling: "Attention: Disabling background data extends battery life and lowers data use. Some applications may still use the background data connection.".Disabling either one seems to extend battery life. I haven't figured our yet how they differentially affect push email, etc. Would someone kindly explain to me how these settings are different?

In android 4.0 and above there is the option in the data usage settings, to turn mobile data on and off. What difference does it exactly make? As fas as I tested, I still can take a look at my mobile data usage, even though it is tuned off in the data usage settings.
According to this source of Google
[URL]
turning it off means:
Quote:
If it's off, you won't be able to use mobile data at all and many features of your phone and apps won't work correctly.
what they mean by "...use mobile data at all..." (since I still have 3G) and what features there could be?

Recently I logged into GMail with my browser instead of the GMail app, and discovered what I've read before elsewhere... that the GMail mobile web page seems cooler and better, than the app.
So, I've been thinking... which is better? Is either better? Can they both be equally good?
Either way, it occurred to me, it's interesting that all the Android blogs fall all over themselves almost weekly to come out with various "Best X Android Apps" articles, but I don't think I've seen any articles about the best mobile web pages for Android (or any smart phone for that matter).
I understand the money is to be made in apps, and that not much can (yet) be done with the web that you can do with an app (until we have workable Flash?) but surely there must be some great mobile sites out there that are better than, or equal to, apps?
I'm appealing to all of you then to make your suggestions for Best or at least good mobile web pages to use on our Android phones. I'll be looking around myself, and will possibly turn the results into a blog post of my own.
Here are a couple of starters that seem to be better than the app versions:
- Gmail: nicer interface, quick access to GTalk and Buzz as well as Calender, etc.
- Evernote: www.evernote.com/m Evernote has a really good mobile web site in case you don't want to download the app.

I'm trying to limit my mobile data usage with out jumping through hoops.
I'm looking for a widget, that with one click of a button, it can restrict background data, disable auto-sync and enable mobile data, and when pressed again, enable WiFi, disable background restriction and enable auto-sync.
This function, no matter how trivial, would save time and effort.
Is there anything like this out there? Would something like this require root?

Everytime i drive to my girlfriend's house i have to write a message that i have arrived and she can come out but i have to prepare text it while standing in the traffic jam, at the traffic light or while driving (it's uncomfortable and dangerous!).
So i though - what about a shortcut on my home screen or in my "Car Home" app that:
will send a certain template message to a certain recipient just by one click on the shortcut (well maybe can be two clicks that the second will ask for confirmation "YES/NO").

I'm trying to make a soundboard to put on the android market. I downloaded a soundboard template from [URL]..., and it works great except I don't know how to successfully change the package name from "com.soundboard" to something else without making the project go all "error" crazy.
I click the package name in the the package explorer and click refactor and I change the package name, but then everything becomes an error because the package name is now different. How can I change the package name successfully so I don't get errors everywhere?

I've been trying to do the following:
A user is viewing content/page on my View/Activity, and I have an email button, they select "email" and popup a prefilled in email/ subject asking for the to: address....or some way to launch teh default email client with a pre-composed email awaiting the sender to be filled in.. . .ala, "check out this link/content'....
Possible? I can see how to do a mailto:// link, but trying to leverage the built-in contacts and email app, but to compose and stuff the email contents with contents.

I can't find a way of saving a text template to avoid retyping my address every time I want to send it. You can only send a business card through bluetooth and I tried sending myself a text from my other phone so I could forward it. But that won't work either because I can only send a text from my address book or in reply to a text within a thread. Any ideas?

I'm going to develop a mobile version of my webapp. Most documentation I've read suggests one of the following approaches:create a separate domain (m.example.com)using conditional css style sheets, but serve the same html
I'd like to take a completely different approach. I'm using MVC, and would decide which template to render on the server side. My model and controller will be the same, the domain will be the same, but the html will be served differently for mobile users.Has anyone tried this? Any pitfalls to this approach?

I'm new to the forums, and very interested in the Evo. I was wondering about the HDMI connector type on the Evo. I did some quick searches in google and the forums here and didn't see anything definitive. ImGreen brought up the question in the official Evo thread, but I'm still working on reading through that. At the point I'm at, I didn't see a clear answer. Anyway, I came across this information, and I'm posting in hopes that it's helpful to others (perhaps in search results) and not rehash. Here's a comparison to HDMI Type-D to Micro USB.

I bought a cable, manufactured by HTC, which is supposed to give you the ability to stream video out via the device's usb connector. It has a usb connector on one end and splits out to three rca plugs on the other (the usual red, white, and yellow for audio and video). HTC claims that the cable is compatible with my phone (the HTC Eris). When I connected the cable and it didn't work, I wrote to HTC support, which replied that I need software to enable the phone to do this. I searched the anroid market and the web and could not find any such software. I wrote back to HTC asking for them to suggest software to me and they never responded. Does anyone know of such software? Would HTC manufacture a cable in anticipation of somebody developing the proper software?

There are precious few accessories for the Magic which doesn't bother me too much but I'm surprised that the charging cradles don't have a sound output connector. Is there a technical reason for that? It seems that there are USB cables that can charge and provide a standard audio connector but I'd like to see a cradle do the same so that the phone can stand up nicely at bedside.

So I ordered a Micro USB cable with a regular USB port on the other side so I could connect and sync my Samsung Moment with my computer, but all it does is charge it. I was under the impression that as long as it gets connected to the computer somehow it would be able to sync up but the computer doesn't recognize me inserting the phone. Is there such thing as a USB cable that just charges and a USB cable that charges AND syncs? And if so, what is it called? So I can look it up on amazon.com

Okay, so i quite fancy getting a speaker dock for my HTC Desire. For 2 functions really, the main one is charging, but also so i can use it to listen to music without my headphones. Now, most the decent docks appear to be geared towards the iPhone/iPod ( have been looking at them in electrical stores today) -and thus, where my HTC phone will sit there is obviously the huge wide iPod/iPhone connector which would fit into the base of the iphone - obviously with the hTC being a mini usb input, it wont fit. So my question is is there a small connector available somewhere that has the female ipod connection at one end and then the male mini usb the other so you can simply slip this on the male sticking out ipod connector at the base of these Speaker/CHarger docks and then put the HTC on top? know a lot of them do have AUX inputs which means yeah, i could connect it and listen through the speakers BUT, id like this to be a charging dock as well. Am i th ONLY person in the world who has a HTC that wants a Speaker/Charger Dock?? surely not?
