Media :: Video File Formats And Codecs Playing
Sep 25, 2010
This is 2010. I refuse to believe that you can only play movies/video files that have .avi, .mp4, .mpg, .mkv file formats by converting. I remember Sony was slow on the uptake when they started the media server streaming which I use on a daily basis at home now.Is there a program that will decode the files as you stream them? Any codecs to install on the Droid X? I have thousands of video files and "converting" is time consuming not to mention creating two video files instead of one to play on devices. Converting is BS and whoever thought "Let's just have the users convert the video files" needs to take a long walk off a short pier.

I am switching from iPhone to Motorola Droid and having issues with converting videos. Can someone tell me what are the most optimal settings for converting videos for playback and a good converter that converts videos in bulk not one at a time?

Is there any support for avi and other media formats except mp4 and 3gpp? If there is no support may I develop a support through correct the program? Will that be too difficult ?I don't know where to put my hands into first, should I correct programs in opencore first or should I just correct programs in directory frameworks/base/include/ media . I want to have a clear mind how I can achieve my goal, I need a roadmap to guide me how to do it.
I am trying to get familiar with the SDK 1.0 now. another question, my chip is from freescale and it supports hardware codecs of mpeg4, h.263 and h.264, I don't know whether I can change the program or the architecture of mediaplayer to utilize my hardware codecs instead of software codecs provided by android opencore. I once implement an mplayer to my platform, there is problems about sync of audio and video due to the quality of my chips(CPU can support software codecs but is not fast enough to make sure sync of audio and video), So I am worried about when the android is implemented, there would also be the same problem, and for this reason, I am thinking whether I can utilize my hardware codecs for mediaplayer.

I need to know if there is a way for watching .WMV videos on the HTC Hero.
I already know that it will play MPEG-4 videos without a problem (you can use the RealPlayer Video Downloader to download HQ/HD videos from places like Youtube and it automatically saves them to MPEG-4 format).
However, I want to transfer some files like music videos onto my HTC Hero and having tried several times, using the RealPlayer Converter, to convert the .mpg files to .wmv, I can't watch them on the Hero.
However, I recently looked at one of the threads (I think on a different forum) and he said that he could watch videos in WMV format using 750kbps on resolution 480x320. But RealPlayer only allows for 768kbps and resolution as 480p HD as the nearest possible (which was the setting I ordinarily chose).
The other strange thing is that when I go onto the Albums part of the phone to see if I can view any videos, it shows a thumbnail image of the music video (a preview image of the video) and when I play it, I can hear the music, but the video itself fails to appear.

i'm big into freestyling. i have over 1500 instrumentals on my phone.i can't figure out how to play them and record myself (either audio or video) at the same time.i figure i'm either gonna have to download a new music player that won't close or a video/audio recorder that won't close the "Music" player that came with my evo.and before anyone goes tryin to be smart, i realize that even if i was able to accomplish such an action the quality would probably be really low due to speaker and mic being so close.my intent is more of a "on the fly lyric composition" rather than a " put myself on youtube to show everyone how awesome i am"

I am new to using Android. I am wondering if there is any video (MP4) player that would continue playing the video even when I use the home button to switch to other apps (e.g. check my email etc.) I have a few documentaries/discussions to watch and sometimes minimize the video player to check other information on my phone and the video stops.
Any Video players that continue playing when minimized. I know that the Meridian Player continues playing when the screen is switched off, but it stops if you press the home button.
(I use a Galaxy Nexus with Jelly Bean.)

I have copied about ten albums of mp3s onto my HTC Desire but only about one in five of the tracks will actually play. Windows Media Player doesn't have a problem with any of them.
I've tried playing with the default music player and Meridian with the same result. Has anyone seen this?
Is it possible to install more codecs on the Android? Is that even the problem?

I plan to have a 3gp video file that will come with the installation package, it will be placed in /files/ subdirectory, and I would like to ask the native Android media player to play it when I want that.
Here is what I have planned to do/code:
Intent intent = new Intent(android.content.Intent.ACTION_VIEW);
Uri data = Uri.parse("BattlestarGalactica.3gp"); intent.setDataAndType(data,"video/3gpp"); startActivity(intent);
However, when I try to launch the lines above, I get the following error:
CODE:.............
And the video can not be played.
What am I doing wrong that is not applicable to Android platform?

I am having issues with playing videos on my X10. I have used Media Go to convert .avi to .mp4 before and they have worked fine but now I can only get 1 file to work out of 10. I have played the converted files in Mediscape and now they dont want to work.
So......
I have tried several different conversion programs (Smart C, Double Twist and some others I cant remember) and I have also tried a couple of different players as well (Rock Player, YxFlash, Real Player) and nothing works.
YxFlash used to let me play .avi and I believe that Rock Player is supposed to be able to support .avi as well. Now, nothing.
I dont mind converting the files, IF THEY WORK.

I was looking at the Droid X to be my first Android phone and was curious about the supported video codecs. What files are supported and would the files supported on the Droid X be different from the Incredible or is it the same for all Android phones? Are there apps that offer better support?

I downloaded a few episodes of my favorite series (futurama whoop whoop whoop) off of Megaupload.com to watch on the go. Now, the native player won't play .avi files, which is an annoying inconvenience for such an advanced device, but easily averted with a trip to the market. I personally use rockplayer to play these.
But now in an effort to get what little use the hdmi out offers I want to get them to play on the native player to be able to project them on my television.
Is there a way to play .avi or other formats on the evos native player? or a way to convert them?

I'm writing a bitmap editor. Each document consists of about 3 bitmap layers and documents are, at the moment, saved as a custom file with a .bme extension. These files can be converted to standard jpg/png files by rendering each bitmap on top of one bitmap and saving the latter. I need some way for the user to be able to select .bme files they've created already. Is there anything in Android that can make this easier for me? The only option I can see is to write an activity that creates a list view and write a list adapter that looks for .bme files on disk i.e. a copy of the standard "Media Gallery" app that works for my .bme files. The list adapter will either have to generate a thumbnail preview of the image to show to the user or I'll have to package such a preview in the .bme file when they're created. This is the only option I can think of. I thought I'd ask in case there is more Android friendly way of doing this. For example, can you add custom file support to the "Media Gallery" app?

I'm looking to make the plunge to Droid now that the new Droid X is announced but I'm still researching.I was looking on the web and I see some software to convert DVD's to formats so that they can be played on the Droid. Can anyone that does this give me an estimate as to how big the file size is when a DVD is converted? I realize that the quality can be changed which will affect the file size, but I'm trying to figure out about how many dvd's I could fit onto a 16gb card.

I'm new to the Android OS having been a Symbian (2nd phone is a Nokia N97) and Windows Mobile user previously. My question regards a copy of Family Guy (Something, Something, Something, Dark Side) which I purchased yesterday. The standard DVD also comes with a digital copy on the DVD which, when inserted into the drive brings up a choice of transferring the file to my computer to be copied over to my Desire as either a iTunes file or a Windows Media Video (WMV).Ideally I want to avoid the iTunes route as currently I have no use for that program on my system so I would like to be able to use the WMV version. When I copied the file to my Desire, it didn't play and the phone didn't seem to recognise it. Can anyone please give me advice on how to play a WMV on my Desire?

I've been using MediaPlayer for playing some sounds and I've found no way to get hold of a list of supported mime types at runtime. I was hoping for something along the lines of MIDP's javax.microedition.media.Manager.getSupportedContentTypes() but there doesn't seem to be anything that achieves this on Android. The only thing that there seems to be is a web page that lists supported media types (at the moment and on the small amount of devices available).
http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/media-formats.html
Does anyone know of a way of enumerating the mime types?

Just thought I'd share the video formats supported by EVO for those who may not know. You can play these high-definition MP4 video formats in:
H.263 profile 0 @ 30 fps, WVGA (800x480), max 2 Mbps
MPEG-4 simple profile @ 30 fps, 720p (1280x720), max 6 Mbps
H.264 baseline profile @ 30 fps, 720p (1280x720), max 6 Mbps
