Android :: APK Newer Than Installed Version?
Jun 22, 2010I got a few apps on my sd card that may or may not be newer than the ones I already have installed. Actually there are quite a few so I don't feel like going through and checking all the version numbers of whats installed. Is there an easier way to tell if the version on my sd card is newer than what's already installed, or do I need to go through and check all my version numbers?

May 10, 2012I've only had my Android phone for about 2 weeks now but being a bit of a geek love to tweak things to make them "cooler"...Updating - can I manually update from 2.2.1 to a newer version?Widget - There was a widget already installed with 5 icons, WiFi-Bluetooth-?-?-brightness Not sure what the two are but I suspect perhaps GPS (looks like it might be a sat dish) and Account Sync (circle with 2 curved arrows)Sometimes the phone boots in Safe Mode and after a few reboots finally boots into "normal" mode. Through trial and error I can get to a "recovery" prompt but that has "wipe" functions and I don't want to wipe my data. Is there an other option or just keep rebooting until it works? I read that you can hold the volume + button, but that brings up a factory testing menu on this clone phone.
The phone is a HTC clone from China (Hero 300 listed on box). I have a 2GB card I'm using with it. It appears to be "rooted" because there is the superuser icon.

Jun 16, 2013A friend of mine rooted my samsung mobile Galaxy S I9000 with a android 2.2 version. I read information on rooting your device, in which everything is explained very well, but could not find information on how to update once a device was rooted (probably I did not search in the right place). What I did so far is:
1) Taking backup of my pics (by manually drag and drop the folder on my pc), SMS and call logs (with sms backup + app), syncronized my contacts with gmail so that I can recover them later on and backup the music folder. I installed backup Titanium to back up my apps on my SD card.
1) Which most recent version of Android is supported on the device I have?
2) Is there important information that I forgot to back up?
3) Is there a guide with step by step procedure on which files I have to download on my pc and which procedure to follow?

(After watching that guy crush the World Record for Texting using Swype). I long pressed for input method, selected swype, and attempted to use. I got a "Your trial has ended please upgrade your version of swype." I have looked everywhere and am not able to find a different version of the one that I have. Nov 11, 2010I have the black Rogers HTC Magic I purchased off of eBay with a broken case, I bought the Fender edition replacement case for the HTC MyTouch and with some adjusting it fit nicely. Only problem now is I'm addicted to this game Pocket Legends for my iPhone so I never use my HTC. The HTC Magic has Firmware 1.5 on it and 2.1 just came out, I was going to download it from the HTC website and upgrade to use my HTC now as Pocket Legends just got released for Android but only works on Firmware 2.1. Little problem being that the download from the HTC site is a .exe file. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and I don't own a computer in the house that runs windows. What do I do? I just want to have my HTC Magic upgraded from 1.5 to 2.1 and then "root" it as I've heard people say.. To my understanding "rooting" is the same thing as one would do with an iPhone for "Jailbreaking"?

A new build of Android contains system.img and userdata.img (among others). system.img is read-only, so I don't see any problem with simply replacing the user's existing copy. However, simply overwriting userdata.img with a newer version would destroy all of an end-users application data (wouldn't it?).
I'm trying to understand how this process will work for our Android- based device. It seems that the designers of Android must have had a plan for doing this without the user losing all of their data, but I can't find any documentation about this. Googling for this information yields lots of pages containing hacker- level instructions (e.g. adb commands) -- still no idea how this process was envisioned to work for average end-users.

I don't make many phone calls (less than 20-30 min/day) and don't expect to use it a ton. i would like for it to have a great battery life and probably an actual keyboard (but not a necessity). what would be the best model? is there a model coming out soon i should consider? i saw the droid pro, would this be a good choice (like the keyboard, but it has a smaller screen)

HTC Magic :: Adding Contact Icons (Image) - Low Resolution Version
Jan 22, 2010Every time I try to add a contact icon (from a saved image on my phone), my Magic saves a low-resolution version of the crop I make.
When I dial the contact, the picture looks HORRIBLE (it seems like the resolution is about 50x50px or something). I tried making contact icons from photos made with the phone or from high-res images that I transferred from my PC, but the outcome is always the same: the resolution of the icon is too small.
Is there a way to solve this problem? There's no point having a low-res image in a high-resolution image placeholder.

- 1st simple version to download using a OTA server, clients accesss to an URL to download.
- 2nd version more complex to be published on the Market.
The question here is that the process to publish on the Android Market is under bureaucratic internal process and it takes a long time, so the idea do reduce the time to market is to provide an OTA version.
There is any possibility for users that download application via OTA to upgrade the application for version published later on the Market? (Both Application will be signed with the same key).
