HTC Magic :: Can I Turn Off Cell Radio?
Sep 22, 2010
I would like to know if I can turn off the cell radio on my HTC Magic but keep the WiFi on. I live in an area where the cell signal is very poor for all carriers (I'm with Rogers). So when I'm at home I have my phone set to call forward to my landline phone and use WiFi as my connection to the internet for e-mail, MSN, etc. I know you can put the phone into "Airplane Mode" but this disables all radio including WiFi. The reason I want to disable only the cell radio is that my phone is constantly losing and reacquiring the signal from Rogers which eats up battery.

I've read all the threads I could find in here about turning off the cell radio but none have addressed this particular configuration. The reason I want to do this is because I don't use my Incredible for talking, I just use it as a computer. For talking I use a cheap little "dumb phone" so to conserve battery while i'm out n about all day, i would love to be able to have the cell radio off while 3g is on. If anyone knows of any way/app to achieve this.

When I check what has been using my battery, I see that 32% has been used for "Battery used by cell radio". Does anyone know what that means? Does it refer to the FM radio? Because I made sure that was not turned on.

Is there a way I can get access to the following information from the cell. I know that it uses a Qualcomm MSM7201A chip. I know qualcomm unleashes a boat load of information such as: Pilots-Channels PN offset Neighbours Searches PN Codes Power Control-TX and RX Slot DRC Signal Noise Ratio Carrier to Noise Ratio Energy to Noise Ratio
So the question is can I get access to all this information and are there APIs from Android that I can use.
So far the closets I have come is in telephony/PhoneStateListener telephony/NeighboringCellInfo telephony/CellLocation telephony/TelephonyManager

When I am at school I can barely get a signal. I constantly get notifications for going in and out of service and it's MURDERING my battery! So I was wondering if anyone knows how to completely disable my cellphone usage WITHOUT disabling wifi?

Anyone know if there is a way to have the Nexus automatically go to Edge when WiFi is enabled? Seems like that would be a smart way to try to maximise battery life...
Maybe it's already doing this, I don't know, since the WiFi symbol blocks the 'E' or '3G' symbol...
But if it doesn't - I propose it as a feature for a future update...
Is there a page that allows Nexus users to propose features? iPhone had this way back...

I recently purchased this Tablet cum Phone Device (Asus Fonepad) in India. I found this device very impressive with decent battery backup along with great standby time. Everything was allright. In morning I found heavy battery draining during standby.
Next day I uninstalled that Black market application and Uninstalled Exdialer with all downloaded themes. I got full signals and everything was working fine. But the Battery Drain in standby remain same. I observed the situation till next two days. I searched to forums and did following things:
1. I made factory reset to my fonepad. which was haviing 4.1.2 Android after updating through OTA. Which remains same after Reset.
2. I didnt install any other applation
3. I turned of all battery comsuming services like GPS/ Location reporting/ Data/ Wifi/ Uninstalled Google Play Service Updates etc
4. Installed Wakelock detector, Better Battery Stats etc All are showing that phone goes in deep sleep no prblem but Wakelock detector show that Cell Radio wakes up so much time when phone is on sleep mode. Default Battery monitor of Android Showing "Mobile Data" as most battery comsumer.
One thing I want to mention here the device is supportive to mini sim only. I was not having mini sim so I went to market and mobile shop keeper cutted my Sim to adjust into that slot and it woked. I was using same sim from Day first. It's Vodafone INDIA.
I have not rooted nor flashed anything from my fonepad. I am reached to the conclusion that There is some problem with Exdialer installation and applying new/old theme combination to it which made me device with no signal. And now The Cell Radio has been changed which is attempting to achive something in standby mode. Which is causing heavy battery Drain. Standby time is reduced to almost 15-16 Hrous

I've ported a Hero ROM to a HTC Magic. Here's my problem:
Problem: There's a great battery drain when you're connected to the network (no data but just mobile network for calls/SMS)
Ported ROM: Sandwich Deluxe 4.0 .
Original ROM: Hero ROM
Kernel: carz-2.6.34.4 (fast and stable)
The mobile network drains battery.I'm not in a low signal-area. Everybody who uses the ROM has a drain.I'm using a 2.x.x instead of a 3.0 kernel for an ICS ROM, can it be that this mismatch creates the drain? The phone displays a singal strength of 0dBm 97 asu. (Not normal?)
What doesn't cause the problem? In airplane mode there is no drain at all. So it is unlikely that some apps causes the drain.Wifi, GPS, sync, ... are all disabled.
What do you expect from xdamembers?
- Confirmation if the kernel is the issue of the drain. If not, I would like to know which files (in ROM) are responsible for network signal.

I've got an HTC Magic on Rogers that I rooted and flashed to CM5 stable about a month ago. Everything runs great, except occasionally (sometimes once a day, sometimes more) the radio seems to go into la-la land. The 3G icon will disappear, but I still show bars.... however there is no connectivity. Once it falls into this state it seems to kill the battery quite quickly. The only way to wake it back up is to reboot the phone or to toggle airplane mode on then back off. When CM6 stable came out a few days ago, I thought I would give that a shot and see if it made any difference... unfortunately it didn't (runs great otherwise though!). I'm currently using radio version 3.22.26.17... is there perhaps another version I can try?
I just got looking thru my Network settings and I had 3 APN's listed (Rogers 1, Rogers 2 and Rogers MMS I think). With Rogers 1 selected, it would register and I would get the 3G icon. With Rogers 2, it wouldn't... so I've deleted the Rogers 2 entry.

Bought my HTC Magic yesterday. Though I am struggling with the G3 connections. As soon as I disable the WLAN android is connecting and transferring with G3, which actually costs my quite a lot of money - Eventhough I also disabled every auto-connections in the settings.

I'm writing an android application that collects cell signal strengths.I am having trouble getting the "current" cell signal strength, but I don't have any problem getting the "neighboring" cell signal strengths. To get the current cell signal strength, I created a PhoneStateListener and implemented the onSignalStrengthChanged callback. It works, but not very well.It seems like the signal strength hardly ever changes, and resolution jumps to only a few numbers.I would accept the answer that the resolution of the signal strength hardware is coarse, but when I use the TelephonyManager's getNeighboringCellInfo() method, it works much better. The signal strength readings from neighboring cells change frequently, and they have much better resolution. So, how can I get the current cell signal strength in the same way that I am getting the neighboring cell strengths? It seems odd to me that the functionality of the neighboring cells is better than the current cell.

Is it possible to turn on the 802.11 wireless, while keeping the phone radio turned off?
I was recently on an airplane that had WiFi wireless connectivity (Delta using GoGo). I had my Moment and wanted to try it out. The problem is that the only way I could find to turn off the cell radio, as required by the FAA, is by putting the phone into "Airplane Mode". But, in Airplane mode, I could not get the WiFi to turn on.
So, what I really wanted was not "Airplane mode" but WiFi on and Cell Radio turned off. But I could not figure out any way to do that. Is it possible?

seems like anything using 3g drains my battery. slacker player saps 30% of a 2600mah battery in a single hour. If I were to be conservative, it would be 25% of a 2200mah, accounting for other parts of the phone and possibly a low quality battery. Even then, that's horrible. It didn't used to be this bad. And now I suspect it's a combination of a new radio update that boosts signal by consuming more power, and the fact that 3g coverage is weak where I'm at (though it worked good enough before the update). So if there's any way to downgrade radio without losing froyo or other phone functionality, or directly influence power consumption of the 3g radio, please let me know.

I was looking at the phone info, found by dialing *#*#4636#*#* one button in this is "Turn off radio".I'm interested to know if this could be used to work around the current inability to do airplane mode and enable wifi at the same time on the Eris. Could you use this option to turn off the radio, disable mobile network, and then enable wifi?Has anyone seen if this works, and if turning the radio on and off is as easy as finding this button? I'm a bit afraid to try it myself right now.

I currently have code that creates rows in a table that hold a string in column 1 with a RadioButton in column 2. There can be a variable number of these rows. That all works just great, but I want to add them to a RadioGroup so only one button can be toggled at a time. When I tried to add the dynamic RadioButton to the RadioGroup AFTER I added it to the table row, I got an error saying that the child (the RadioButton) already had a parent. I agree, it does have one, the TableRow.
can you have radio buttons tied to a radio group inside of a row or, should I just code my own toggle mechanism and avoid RadioGroup all together? I mean, I could code the onClick to unclick all other radio buttons, but I would rather not do this if I can use the build in RadioGroup.
<ScrollView
android:id="@+id/ScrollViewModifyGroups"
android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="fill_parent".............

I have multiple radio buttons which I want to layout using a table but also include them in a single radio group. I have the following xml layout:
<RadioGroup android:layout_width="fill_parent"
android:layout_height="wrap_content"
android:orientation="vertical"
android:id="@+id/Group1">
<TableLayout android:id="@+id/RadioButtons"
android:layout_width="wrap_content".........
But unfortunately the radio buttons inside the table seem to ignore the fact that they're inside of the RadioGroup tags and because of this you can select more than one radio button at the time. I noticed that by removing the table and just having the radio buttons it works just fine. How can I overcome this? Would it be as simple as declaring the radio group inside of the table instead of outside?

I turned on my Droid this morning to listen to MSNBC and I heard the last 5 minutes of Keith Obermann (5:55 am est) and then all of my news and talk channels disappeared! Channels like CNN, C-SPAN, MSNBC and NPR are all gone from my favorites and the channel line-up. There is nothing in the "News and Public Radio" category.
Has anyone else noticed this? I'm thinking this must be a temporary glitch but I would hate to lose all of these channels. If you have the Sirius/ XM radio app, would you please check this on your Droid?

Depends on the size and gauge of the wire of your headphones. Also depends on the position of the wires. FM radio is a little picky, but works fine- depending on the points mentioned. Old & wrong: The FM radio on the Inc must be the weakest radio in a phone, evah! Just tried it today and picks up half the channels my Ngage and N900 pick up well. A lot of channels barely come in, or are static filled. I thought Steely Dan said "FM has no static at all"? Makes the CDMA radio seem not that bad, in comparison I know- at LEAST it has a radio. Must be set to suppa powwa savva mode
