General :: Asus Fonepad Battery Drain In Standby Due To Cell Radio
Sep 20, 2013
I recently purchased this Tablet cum Phone Device (Asus Fonepad) in India. I found this device very impressive with decent battery backup along with great standby time. Everything was allright. In morning I found heavy battery draining during standby.
Next day I uninstalled that Black market application and Uninstalled Exdialer with all downloaded themes. I got full signals and everything was working fine. But the Battery Drain in standby remain same. I observed the situation till next two days. I searched to forums and did following things:
1. I made factory reset to my fonepad. which was haviing 4.1.2 Android after updating through OTA. Which remains same after Reset.
2. I didnt install any other applation
3. I turned of all battery comsuming services like GPS/ Location reporting/ Data/ Wifi/ Uninstalled Google Play Service Updates etc
4. Installed Wakelock detector, Better Battery Stats etc All are showing that phone goes in deep sleep no prblem but Wakelock detector show that Cell Radio wakes up so much time when phone is on sleep mode. Default Battery monitor of Android Showing "Mobile Data" as most battery comsumer.
One thing I want to mention here the device is supportive to mini sim only. I was not having mini sim so I went to market and mobile shop keeper cutted my Sim to adjust into that slot and it woked. I was using same sim from Day first. It's Vodafone INDIA.
I have not rooted nor flashed anything from my fonepad. I am reached to the conclusion that There is some problem with Exdialer installation and applying new/old theme combination to it which made me device with no signal. And now The Cell Radio has been changed which is attempting to achive something in standby mode. Which is causing heavy battery Drain. Standby time is reduced to almost 15-16 Hrous

I've ported a Hero ROM to a HTC Magic. Here's my problem:
Problem: There's a great battery drain when you're connected to the network (no data but just mobile network for calls/SMS)
Ported ROM: Sandwich Deluxe 4.0 .
Original ROM: Hero ROM
Kernel: carz-2.6.34.4 (fast and stable)
The mobile network drains battery.I'm not in a low signal-area. Everybody who uses the ROM has a drain.I'm using a 2.x.x instead of a 3.0 kernel for an ICS ROM, can it be that this mismatch creates the drain? The phone displays a singal strength of 0dBm 97 asu. (Not normal?)
What doesn't cause the problem? In airplane mode there is no drain at all. So it is unlikely that some apps causes the drain.Wifi, GPS, sync, ... are all disabled.
What do you expect from xdamembers?
- Confirmation if the kernel is the issue of the drain. If not, I would like to know which files (in ROM) are responsible for network signal.

I have recently acquired an Asus Fonepad. Here in South Africa I have two options for on-line music purchases and downloads - iTunes and Nokia Music. I use both on my PC, but I'm getting tired of being tied to the PC and of having to move stuff from the PC to the tablet. iTunes obviously isn't going to be an option on an Android tablet, but I hope to use Nokia.
URL....
So on the tablet I have two browsers: Chrome, and what I presume to be the default android browser (which I shall just refer to as "Browser" from here on). With Chrome I can't even log into music.nokia.com. It fails every time. I can log in using Browser.
So, having logged in I can see my previous purchases and my download history. On my PC I can go into my history and download a previously purchased track by clicking on an icon that has a downwards pointing arrow. When I click on the icon it changes colour and then a download starts - into the browser's download directory.
In Browser on the tablet I see the icon, I can click on it, it changes colour and then.... nothing, as far as I can tell. I get the little circular-ish animation that, I presume, means Browser is doing something. But I don't get a notification of a download in the pull down notification panel, and if I look in memory I can't find any downloaded music files. It seems to not download anything at all.

I am a long time reader of this forum because i can find almost all of the answers to my gadget questions. And then decided to take on and register just because I am now frustrated and can't do anything about my ASUS K004 ME371MG Fonepad not detecting a generic USB controller/gamepad (although the analog indicator lights up when switched on).
The controller is a PS2-like controller with USB port-end, and I am using it through an OTG cable. Flashdrives, Mice and Keyboards are working smoothly on my device. Also, I let my friend try this contoller/gamepad on his device (Samsung Galaxy Note) and it is working.

i have some problems with battery life. The reason is the facebook for android app. I have already turned off the automatic sync, so the app shouldn't start itself but here is the partial wakeup spareparts shows me after a day of very light use (i have sometimes closed the Facebook process when i saw that my battery made jumps of 10% without touching it for an hour.

I charge my evo while I'm sleeping. Last night I went to sleep with it at 100% and woke up 10 hours later to find that I had lost 50%. Battery indicator told me that it was 48% cell standby and 48% phone idle and only 2% Android system. Is this usual? I didn't know just leaving my phone on the table would kill so much.

Im trying to figure out the consumption issues with my battery and cell standby. it is currently responsible for 39% which is at the top of the list just above phone idle. what really concerns me though is my time without a signal is 49%!! but everytime i look at my phone it has 3bars! how can this be? and im assuming this is whats killing my battery? it should be noted that i dont think i have the "bug" others seemed to have.

I was just wondering if anyone had the same issue as I do, with about 44% of my battery use coming from the notorious call standby.
I heard some speculation that this is akin to the issue with the Eris 2.1, so it would be solved by the Airplane Mode trick, but I have not found any results favoring that remedy.

At home i've noticed that even though I have wifi on, it'll drain 15-20% of my battery over night (8 hours). When I turn the display on it'll show that there's no wifi connection available, but wifi is still enabled. After i turn the display on, it'll quickly connect to my wifi. Is this normal? How do i make it stay connected to my home wifi when the display is off/phone is in standby?

I tried doing the Airplane trick...I am not sure this is the 50% issue others have mentioned because when I go to view my battery statistics, it doesn't show the 2 lines of information like it did before (i.e, 50%), but my phone idle and cell standby are Both hanging around 36%...seems kind of high in my opinion.

Just yesterday my phone was getting more than 14+ hours of battery. Now it's draining really quickly even when I'm not using it (I left it on while I was asleep). It's not facebook because I already downloading the fix and rebooted. My "time without signal" is 0% so I don't think that's the problem. I did download Quickpedia yesterday but a quick search tells me that's not the problem either.
The only other thing I did differently was switch from ADW to LauncherPro yesterday, but if that was draining the battery wouldn't it be under Android System and not standby or idle? Regardless, I switched back to ADW just to see if that works

First off, I read these forums like every day for 2 months (nearly drove my wife insane!) leading up to the release of the X. Stood in line and bought one in the store on the 15th. Had nothing but iPhones until now - loving my DroidX!
BUT
As of right now my battery is down to 60% after having been unplugged (when I unplugged I was at 100%) for 1hr 46m 9s!
It shows display at 93% and cell standby at 7%.
I'm running smart battery mode, auto screen brightness, not that many widgets, and I rooted it and have autokiller running on Aggressive.
Do I just have a bad battery? And if so will Verizon (or Moto) give me a new one?

A cell phone is a transmitter just like a radio tower, and higher power is required to send the signal farther. Every modern cell phone automatically adjusts its transmitter power based on reception. Fewer bars means faster battery drain when you are using your phone. Switching to 2G will not necessarily save battery. If you have a 3G tower nearby, then your battery will last longer. And if you have a spotty 4G connection, you'd best plug in, or don't use it. However, given equal signal strength, a 4G signal is MORE efficient per byte than 3G.

When I check what has been using my battery, I see that 32% has been used for "Battery used by cell radio". Does anyone know what that means? Does it refer to the FM radio? Because I made sure that was not turned on.

I think I figured out why sometimes my Droid stays on for 1.5 days and sometimes after 6 hour of just being idle the battery is drained.
When wifi is turned on an connected to a network, the cellular signal is way low and it just drains the battery.

Does this just mean I am in a bad cell zone? This is my reading at home and it is the top battery usage on the chart, followed by wifi at 24% (on because I am home), and phone idle at 23%.

I know about the 50% without service bug and my phone has it, but I did the airplane trick and I don't have any time without service anymore, but I still have a high amount of time from cell standby. Is there a way to get rid of it? Or is my phone still having a problem? My phone battery will only last about 12 hours, so my battery life has gone up

There has been almost no variation from that. Every now and then Display or Wi-Fi would show up as about 2% each, then disappear after a while. That's all.Last night my battery reached 10%, I turned off the power, charged it overnight for 12 hours, unplugged it, and turned the power back on. I noticed two things:
1. My Battery Use list changed drastically. I assume this is actually a better representation of what the list should look like than what I had been seeing for two weeks, but the other thing I noticed was
2. My battery was draining a lot faster than it ever had during the previous two weeks, even during idle periods. My battery had consistently been draining at around 1% per hour idle until today. Now I'm seeing it drop 5% in LESS than an hour while idle (idle meaning the screen shuts off and I don't use it).
So my question is, what do Cell Standby and Phone Idle mean? Previously they had both been 2% and my idle battery use was excellent. But today they both shot up to the 20-30% range and I'm thinking this may account for the excessive battery drain even while the phone is sleeping. Why would these two things be so high? Nothing changed between yesterday and today except that I turned off the phone and turned it back on. I almost feel like I messed something up by simply turning it off!

I checked to see if I have the cell standby 50% bug and I do. My up time is 11:34:50, my awake time is 3:47:48, but if I look at the cell standby it says time on 14:42:16. How can the cell standby thing be a longer time than my phone has been on? I did the leak 2 days ago, so it's not showing that time or anything.

I've read all the threads I could find in here about turning off the cell radio but none have addressed this particular configuration. The reason I want to do this is because I don't use my Incredible for talking, I just use it as a computer. For talking I use a cheap little "dumb phone" so to conserve battery while i'm out n about all day, i would love to be able to have the cell radio off while 3g is on. If anyone knows of any way/app to achieve this.

For some reason my battery drained extremely fast while it was idle. My phone had about 50% left and an hour later it got all the way down to 14% without any usage. Wifi was on and I didn't get any notifications. I know there are background processes but to have that much battery drained is really strange.

I would like to know if I can turn off the cell radio on my HTC Magic but keep the WiFi on. I live in an area where the cell signal is very poor for all carriers (I'm with Rogers). So when I'm at home I have my phone set to call forward to my landline phone and use WiFi as my connection to the internet for e-mail, MSN, etc. I know you can put the phone into "Airplane Mode" but this disables all radio including WiFi. The reason I want to disable only the cell radio is that my phone is constantly losing and reacquiring the signal from Rogers which eats up battery.

Is there a way I can get access to the following information from the cell. I know that it uses a Qualcomm MSM7201A chip. I know qualcomm unleashes a boat load of information such as: Pilots-Channels PN offset Neighbours Searches PN Codes Power Control-TX and RX Slot DRC Signal Noise Ratio Carrier to Noise Ratio Energy to Noise Ratio
So the question is can I get access to all this information and are there APIs from Android that I can use.
So far the closets I have come is in telephony/PhoneStateListener telephony/NeighboringCellInfo telephony/CellLocation telephony/TelephonyManager
