HTC Incredible :: Navigation Rerouting To Avoid Traffic?
May 5, 2010
I love the real time traffic on my Inc, my question is this; does the Inc's nav reroute you to avoid traffic? I know some other nav's do and some don't. I'm just wondering if it takes traffic into account and will tell you to avoid a highway or whatever to get you around it quicker.

I know there was an option to avoid toll roads and highways on my Eris, but I can't seem to find that same option on the Incredible. Can anyone else confirm this? It's hard to imagine that on the Eris you can but on the Inredible you can't.It's the only thing I miss about my Eris.Is there anyway to avoid tolls on the Incredible?

I'm looking for an app that will navigate while I'm driving, and take traffic into account. Kind of like the at&t navigator, but without having to pay a subscription fee.

Does the Google Navigation program take traffic conditions into consideration when calculating the route? In other words, if I can get to my destination in 20 mins via Hwy A and 25 mins via Hwy B, but Hwy has an accident, will it route me to Hwy B instead? If so, how accurate/real time are the traffic conditions?I have Garmin on Windows Mobile now and find that it's saved me a few times by giving me a route that it wouldn't otherwise give me if the primary route wasn't backed up.

Is there some way to tell the navigation app to keep the "Avoid Tolls" option? If I enable it and use a route, then the next time I pull it up the "Avoid Tolls" option is unselected. Bug?

The only problem is when it reroutes. It takes about 30 seconds to get to the point where it will talk, then it will reroute itself and just mess up. I know this is pretty dumb, but is there anyways to prevent rerouting manually?

1. Does Google navigator has some settings that I missed to automatically re-route navigation if I missed correct turn or exit?
2. Does GNavigator can do smart traffic avoidance? I understand that you can put "traffic" layer on the map, but is there a possible setting to make navigator smart and automatically reroute to avoid traffic?

Has anyone else noticed how disgustingly accurate/sweet the Google Maps Traffic Layer is?I put it on my dash and when it's green, the highway is at least 50 mph +..I noticed that the second my gps triangle entered the orange/yellow, it slowed down to about 25 mph..Immediately after leaving the yellow, it went back up to 50+..Everyday before I leave work, with a swype and a click, I know whether or not I should be getting on the highway or not. Right now it's red - I'll be taking the lake home today.Holy crud muffin I love this thing.

So i am somewhat sick of bump charging. I know that it is EXTREMELY beneficial, as i get a good 20% boost in my battery life. But the downside is that sometime i do not have time to bump charge, other times i forget to turn on my phone for an hour or two... It is a hassle that i would like to avoid. Is there any software patch of some sort that would just fix the charging issue so that the first 7% do not drop so rapidly? I feel like there should be something out there, if not, then it seems like a possibility. So someone please let me know if there is anything out there that would fix the problem.

While serving time with AT&T, my voicemail could be configured to NOT require a PIN when it was being accessed by my dumb phone.
Does anyone know if there is an equivalent feature when accessing Verizon voicemail from my Incredible? My google-fu is weak, for I could not find such a feature.

Does anyone know/have experience with avoiding int'l roaming charges? I called verizon and the rep said that I would roam anytime my phone is on, and that I would incur charges, which is NOT what I want. I don't need 3G or any other type of phone or data connection associated with the network. All I want to be able to do is use Fring/skype/googlevoice through a WiFi connection. I've been reading and am getting confused with all this 'APN' on/off stuff. Can't I just put the phone in airport mode and connect to WiFi through my DINC?

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on which applications I should avoid/uninstall to try to conserve some battery. For example, does it use up a ton of battery to have location aware apps running or is it pretty nominal?

Ever since Froyo came, Ive been confused. First, whats the difference between all 3 navigation choices now? There used to be 1 and now theres 3.
Also, whats a simple way to shut them off? The control panel widget does not seem to shut them all off when hitting the navigation button. I do not want to have to go into settings everytime to shut them all off/turn them all on and deal with those pop ups everytime.

Since upgrading to 2.2, I've noticed my Navigation takes MUCH longer to search for GPS. It now either never gets directions (the "Getting driving directions." pop-up box just sits there forever until I back out) and I have to turn GPS off and on then back out of Navigation and restart it OR it'll get the directions but say "Searching for GPS." for at least a couple minutes.

However, it does not have the "Navigation" program (with the blue arrow) on the phone! It was on my old one.
What am I missing? Did they forget to load it?
I went to the Market and it's not there either.
Has this happened to anyone else who had to get new phones?
What can I do to get the Navigation program back on my new phone?

Can anyone confirm if Google Navigation can be used to just show your progress/location on a road while driving, without having to have an actual destination input?I know this was shown on a few of Rob's videos as not being possible, but just wanted to confirm if anyone had any further info on it.

Originally I was going to ask about an issue of listening to music (either Pandora or HTC Music App) and using the Nav (google maps.) Before froyo, I could listen to either Pandora or HTC Music App over my car's BT, when a new nav direction would come on, the music would fade in then out. This thread suggests that it's an issue with either/both apps. Suggests that bmusic app (I've never used this) works for this purpose. Did not seem to offer a fix for Pandora; only that it seems it would need an update from them to fix.
My other issue is hearing the nav directions when my car stereo is set to something other than bluetooth audio. Effectively, it seems that the car is viewed the same as earphones. This way, when they're connected, audio will not play via the phone's speaker. If I'm listening to either the radio, CD, or USB I simply don't hear the instructions -- the phone still outputs to these bluetooth "headphones", but the stereo isn't set to that output. As I gather, my two options are:
turn off BT
under options, turn off BT audio only
both of these options should make it so that I can listen to any other audio I wish, and listen to directions via the phone's speaker. Turning the BT on and off is a pain, but fairly easy as I've got a toggle button on my primary home screen. However, it means that I'd have to forgo handsfree BT phone while listening to other types of audio.......

I just got my replacement DINC and I can't seem to find the Navigation app to put on my homescreen. I already have google maps but I had the navigation shortcut on my old DINC and that was handy to have so I can just speak my destination after opening it, and now I can't find it. I have the latest update to Google Maps.

While using Google Navigation (beta) i've come across some helpful tips that may enhance your experience with it. Google Navigation (beta) is accessable from the Car Panel or via Google Maps. I'll share some of these tips below.Home Screen Navigation/Destination Shortcuts: One of the first things i noticed was the inability to store places you frequently navigate to within the app itself. In order to have a shortcut to the destination of your choice do the following.
1. Navigate to the Home Screen you wish to put the shortcut icon.
2. Press the + symbol at the bottom right hand side of the screen next to the Phone button.
3. Press Shortcut.
4. Press Directions & Navigation.
5. Type in the address of the destination. You can also use GPS coordinates if you don't know the address.
6. Type in the name of the shortcut you are creating. IE: Home
7. Select an icon, such as the the arrow pointing to home.
8. Press Save.
9. The icon will now show up on your home screen, you can then move it around where ever you wish.
Create GPS Shortcut Folder: If you notice your screen filling up with shortcut icons you can always create a folder using the above instructions but choose "Folder" instead of Shortcut in step 3. Then name the folder GPS or whatever you like and you can store all your destination shortcuts within it.
Receiving a Phone Call: While using Google Navigation if you recieve an incoming phone call, you can take the call and google navigation will continue running in the background. It will even alert you of directions while you are talking so you don't miss your turn. Once the phone call is completed it will go right back to navigating you on your route.Playing Music while Navigating: When you play music with the built in Music app and while using Google Navigation it will automatically cut the audio of the music out while giving you speech alerts during your route. This is done so you do not miss the directions it is giving you. Many aftermarker GPS devices do this as well when playing music from built in apps.
Enable Street View: This is a really cool feature but is not really talked about much within the Google Navigation guide. While you are on your route you can double tap the screen and if a street view is available it will show the street view of where you are heading and where you need to turn. This can be really handy when navigating in town or large cities where streets are in close proximity of one another. You can also zoom in to get street view, but you will need to keep zooming in until it shows the street view which can require many button presses.Adding Layers to the Map: You can also add layers on top of the map which may help you located points of interest along your route. To do this while en route press the menu buttom and choose "Layers". It will then give you a choice of: Traffic View, Satellite, Parking, Gas Stations, ATMs & Banks, Restaurants. Just make your selection(s) and it will update the map to reflect the changes.
Turn off the Screen: While using Navigation you can manually shut off the screen and the voice navigation will continue giving you turn-by-turn voice alerts. This can help save your battery if you left your charger at home on accident. Also Google Navigation by default will keep the screen from falling asleep unless you follow this tip. Credit: Boomstk Exit Navigation: Menu > Exit Navigation Change Route: After your route is displayed, select the menu button, then select route info. on the map itself you will see a route icon. Select that and it will display multiple routes if they are available. Home Screen Navigation/Destination Shortcuts (Alternate): While in the phones regular phonebook. If you edit an entry, then under "Others" click "Add", there's a "Postal Address" option. You can put in their address from there. When you want to navigate to there, you can view the contact and a "View Home address" link will show up (or "View Work address, etc"). Click on it, it starts up Google Maps. Click on the Blue "Up" arrow that appears on the screen and it will navigate to that entries address. Credit: PaulRivers
Misc Tips:
1. When navigating, touch the ETA estimate in the lower left corner. This will make the display pop up to an overhead view of the route, complete with traffic overlays. This is handy if want to avoid bad, red traffic and wish to go another route. It won't give you options, but it will reroute if you deviate off course. Credit: dibs ODDJOB
General Tips:
1. Make sure to keep Google Maps up-to-date. Whenever an update is available its best to update your map as soon as possible to reflect any changes that may have occured.

So yeah , My problem is when I'm listening to music and running navigation the navigation voice stops the music and it doesn't come back on I have to push play. Now coming from a rooted eris I had seen this problem in a rom or two, But now its happening on a stock incredible what can I do? Does anyone know of a fix? I mean I know I can trade it in for another refurb but that's kind of a last resort.

I rooted my phone with Unrevoked3 the Unrevoked Forever. I used my GPS and Navigation to a friends house. It worked great! Then I flashed to the OTA official ROM. Didnt change any setting. My GPS is set on. Under the "LOCATION" setting..everything is checked.
Now I can go to Google Maps and then get my location and then search and stuff. I can even get direction to places. However, when I hit NAVIGATE...all I get is "SEARCHING FOR GPS..." And it would be stuck at the screen for the longest time without going into the Turn-by-turn direction. I turned off my GPS and turned it backed on again...NOTHING! I just adjust the setting...nothing. I even factory reset the phone and getting the same message when I use the navigation feature.
I also notice that the GPS location is not accurate at all...a lot worst than before. This is very annoying since I can use my turn by turn direction. I tried uninstall but the phone wouldnt let me. Since im rooted is there anything I can do?
