HTC Incredible :: A Smooth Downgrade, So I Can Upgrade
Aug 31, 2010
I tired installing the 2.2 update, but as many of us have seen problems have been occuring. I updated my sisters radio to the version that changed the start up screen. I didn't root the phone or apply any other update except for that one. Obviously I need to downgrade what I did to the stock. I downloaded SDK and will attempt to follow this:

I would like to know if it is possible to upgrade/downgrade an android phone (samsung mostly) with official firmwares without the need to root? The reason is that some testing is needed on these devices and only with official firmwares it would be valid. And at will it would be nice to be able to switch versions for different test purposes.

Why does everyone seem to hate SenseUI? I find it beautiful and very smooth. I wouldn't want to remove it when I root my phone. I also get very good battery life after my recent battery tweaks.

I saw a similar thread, but didn't see the answer I was looking for. I did the OTA upgrade to 2.2 last week. Having some problems, so I thought I might roll it back to 2.1. Is doing the factory reset the same as downgrading to 2.1? OR is there some other way to downgrade? If so, could somebody provide step by step instructions?

I rooted my Incredible, and now I have it running the Froyo leak. Unfortunately, I didn't install radio 2.x before doing this, so my camcorder doesn't function properly. Is there a way to downgrade from Froyo to 2.1, install radio 2.x, then reinstall Froyo?

There have already been several requests for information on how to downgrade back to the official 2.2. The following process will remove root. Whether you need to return a phone or you just want to clean the slate and go back to stock, here is how to get there:
Note: Your SD card MUST be formatted to FAT32 before proceeding. The file will not be recognized otherwise. If you have yet to format, remember that formatting wipes the card. Be sure to copy/move your SD contents to a safe place (PC desktop) and replace after the formatting process. I will not go into the procedure in this thread as it is easily found with a Google search.
1.) Need to return a phone and currently have S-Off? (aka Unrevoked Forever) If so, please visit public:forever [RootWiki] where you can download the latest S-On tool and the process to load to your phone. If you want to keep S-Off and just return to the official 2.2, skip to step 2.
2.) Download the 2.2 PB31IMG.zip (extracted from the official 2.2 RUU)
Mirror 1 (Credit and thanks to Doug Piston for hosting)
Mirror 2
Note the file size (172 MB) and the MD5 (31BB1611A0FA8197D447C0438426717E) to ensure a successful download and file integrity. If you have questions about how to verify MD5, please see post #2 of this thread.
3.) Attach phone to PC with USB debugging on and in disk drive mode.
4.) Access the SD storage and drag the PB31IMG.zip from the desktop onto the root of the SD card (any open area, do not place into a folder).
5.) Swipe down notification bar on phone and change to charge only.
6.) Unplug phone from PC and turn off phone.
7.) Hold volume down while pressing power button to enter hboot.
8.) PB31IMG.zip should be automatically recognized in hboot. Press volume up to continue with update. Do NOT interrupt.
9.) When finished, reboot to stock 2.2 and verify the following information at Menu > Settings > About Phone:
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.07.28
Software Number: 3.26.605.1
10.) Remove the PB31IMG.zip from the SD card to avoid an inadvertant reload in the future. You are now unrooted and on stock 2.2
Also adding the RUU option for those that are interested. Thanks again to Doug for the upload/host. For those new to RUU, download to a PC and run from there:

I had 2.1 rooted with S-OFF
I wasn't able to update to 2.2 via OTA so I found an update.zip
I attempted to load the update.zip but it failed
Using [VIDEO] HowTo UnRoot Incredible by downgrading I downgraded to stock 2.1 but for some stupid reason I also disabled unrevoked forever and went to S-ON
I then applied the May OTA update Getting your phone ready for the FroYo update.zip!
Following that I applied the 2.2 update.zip
Here are the versions I'm on:
HBOOT-0.92.0000
RADIO-2.15.00.07.28
Now I'm trying to apply unrevoked3 and it fails
I found 2.1 stock to 2.2 rooted (with links to files)
I tried to downgrade to stock again and I now get this error:
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot the device?
From what I understand I'm unable to downgrade to stock due to having an updated HBOOT
I've found instructions on how to downgrade HBOOT How to revert back to an earlier version of HBOOT but it seems I need clockworkmod to do that
So my question is. Is there a way I can proceed from here or am I stuck waiting for an official root for 2.2?

seems like anything using 3g drains my battery. slacker player saps 30% of a 2600mah battery in a single hour. If I were to be conservative, it would be 25% of a 2200mah, accounting for other parts of the phone and possibly a low quality battery. Even then, that's horrible. It didn't used to be this bad. And now I suspect it's a combination of a new radio update that boosts signal by consuming more power, and the fact that 3g coverage is weak where I'm at (though it worked good enough before the update). So if there's any way to downgrade radio without losing froyo or other phone functionality, or directly influence power consumption of the 3g radio, please let me know.

Or do I need a different ROM to update manually with.I've searched here and there everywhere and I haven't gotten a firm answer or I can't find anything at all.

I want to order an Incredible for my girlfriend from Wirefly/Sears Wireless or Amazon. She wants to transfer the upgrade from her dad's line (they're on a family plan) to her number, but whenever we try to do that on the Verizon website it doesn't stick. Is there a way to permanently transfer the upgrade to her number? Otherwise, could I order the Incredible under her dad's number, and then activate it with her number once we get it? I've heard mixed answers as to whether or not Wirefly/Sears Wireless will charge an ETF for this action.

I got fed up with my music player constantly skipping/phone lag on my Eris and got a VZW manager to approve a early upgrade for me. I was thinking should I go with the Droid Incredible? I wanted some current owner's opinions before I drop $200 on it.
Currently I mainly use my phone for:
1. Texting- I send at least 80 texts a day.
2. Web Surfing- I spend a lot of time on-line google, news..etc
3. Picture taking- I love to snap photos of friends and travels.
4. Talking- I maybe use 500 min a month if that. I text a lot due to working in a call center.
5. Mp3 player- i use my phone in the car and at work prob 45 hours a week
Considering these points do you think it would be wise to choose the Incredible or do you think my issues with the Eris could haunt me again on the Sense UI altogether? Any input is welcomed and appreciated guys.

I am on a Verizon family plan. My line is not due for an upgrade for a long time, but another line on the family plan is (just a standard flip phone). my question is: Can I use the other (flip phone) upgrade to get my self a new incredible WHILE leaving the flip phone a standard, non data line? When i go to purchase online using the upgrade, it makes me choose a data plan.

When I reboot in recovery, it looks like my HBOOT version in .77. Someone in one of the threads mentioned that .77 and .79 were floating around as the safe options. How can I upgrade HBOOT versions, and with everything running fine, is there any benefit to upgrading? I'm running unrevoked forever, second wave rom, and newest radio leak if that matters.

My girlfriend just got an HTC hero and I got a chance to play with it.
Even though it's specs are obviously less than those of the Droid it worked so much smoother, and I just don't understand why. Does android 2.0 just need to go through some growing pains?

Originally this was posted in the Velocity ROM thread but I'm sure most Ally ROMs will be able to benefit from these fixes:
The following will enable JIT and tweak your windowsmgr to allow for smoother scrolling. Using ADB pull your build.prop:
abd pull /system/build.prop
add this line to the end of the file:
windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec=60
This will enable smoother scrolling.
Next, find the following line to enable jit:
#dalvik.vm.execution-mode=int:jit
and uncomment it by removing the # before it
Save the file and push back to /system/build.prop
reboot and your phone should be a little more responsive
I was having some permission denied errors when pushing the build.prop back via adb, so here's what i did:
(this part is optional, if your phone pushes the build.prop fine, then don't worry about this)
adb shell
su
mount -t refs -o remount,rw /dev/stl5 /system
cd sdcard
busybox cp -R build.prop /system
mount -t rfs -o remount,ro /dev/stl5 /system
sync
reboot
**to those having trouble w/ the busybox command, make sure the build.prop is in the sd card, the sd card is not mounted in the computer, and you are in the adb shell of the phone
also, make sure you are cd into /sdcard/ and can see build.prop in the root of your sdcard with ls then try to
busybox cp -R build.prop /system
alternatively if that doesnt work maybe try adb push build.prop /system/build.prop
Tested on Velocity 0.1.1 but may work with other ROMs.

I got my "dinc" in early August with 2.1 onboard and recieved the OTA froyo upgrade about two weeks ago. I like 2.2 (I think) but not all the battery-vampire crap-apps that came with it. I desparately want to root so that I can explore the full potential of this phone and hopefully find some options to extend my battery and get rid of the bloatware.
Unrevoked's website says v3.2 has been temporarily pulled and to use v2.2 "in the meantime". I've tried several of the methods that call for 3.2 using 2.2 and it seems to work up to the reboot step towards the end. Each time I get this "failed to flash recovery image" message. I've followed every detail of several videos and posts (including one from this forum) instructing how to root with Unrevoked, but the end result is always the same.
1. Can I use Unrevoked to root my phone with the froyo upgrade in place?
2. If so, how? Because what I've been trying ain't gettin' it done.
3. If not, is there a way to roll-back to 2.1 so that I can use Unrevoked?
4. Could the 2.2 version of Unrevoked be casuing my "failed flash" issue?

I'm having some issues with the Gmail after upgrading my DINC to Froyo using the Leaked RUU. On 2.1, the second I got an email, it showed up in my Gmail inbox (no notification, but that wasn't a big deal, i just manually checked it) anyway, now its not doing that, and I have to manually refresh Gmail, which is annoying. Anyone else having this issue? Anyone know how to get around it?
