View 49 RepliesI just tried an iPhone and I saw that it has a handy compass mode in Google Maps which rotates the map to the direction you are looking to. If you don't know what I mean here is a video showing it: YouTube - iPhone 3G S; Google Maps + Compass
View 7 Replies View RelatedI discovered an option in street view that is called "Compass View". Not sure what use it is but I thought it was cool. You have to hold the phone in portrait as opposed to landscape for the compass to work...check it out.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to make the google maps work with the compass and spin the map around according to where you are pointing.I notice the iphone4 does this.Have 2.1
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm searching for an app or mod to google maps that allow to view maps (satellite view) offline
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen using navigation is there a way to set the maps to a night mode? The screen is way to bright to use at night even after turning brightness all the way down.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo say you want to use your phone as a personal map, and you don't have service.This still possible. Seems to me that it would call and stream the available map.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIs there any way to get navigation to display in a 2D view like google maps our are we stuck with the 3D view?
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I'm at work, street view can be fun for filler time. Or if I'm looking to go on vacation it's handy to see what's around the area.
But really tho what are you guys using street view for on your phone other than to show you friends who own Iphones how cool it it? Are there functions that I'm missing?
To me it almost seems useless for a handheld device. Even if it moved real time as your walking all it will show you is what you would see right now ... only 6 month to a year ago.
So my question .... is anyone using street view for anything useful .... or am I missing something.
It used to work but now it has gone missing. GM has updated to 4.2.0 (#4210) and i wonder if that removed it?
It's not in the Layer menu. If I hold finger down on a location it doesn't come up in a menu from that either So how to I get it back?
Where is the street view in Google maps ? I do not see it in the layers menu.
View 3 Replies View RelatedProb a noob question or maybe I'm just not seeing it but in google maps, how do I get street view? I can't seem to find it for the life of me. Also, there's apparently a bicycle directions layer option which I can't seem to find.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi just registered here to find out if opening a KML file on my SD card with Google maps in offline mode can work. I am looking for an solution quite a time, but only found this thread on stackover.
Quote:
To load kml into Google Maps on Android without writing an app, you can create a little html file somewhere with a geo-uri link to the kml file and then click on that link in any Android web browser.
For example: suppose your kml file is located in /sdcard/overlay.kml then you write a geo-uri link like this:
Quote:
<html>
<head><title>Example KML link page using a geo-uri</title></head>
<body>
<a href="geo:0,0?q=file:///sdcard/overlay.kml">overlay.kml</a>
</body>
</html>
Clicking on the link will launch Maps and then Maps will attempt to load and your kml.
Be warned however that the Android version of Maps does not appear to handle the same version/range of kml elements as the desktop version (or desktop Google Earth).
a other thread is about editing the manifest file to get maps to open local KML files
Quote:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<manifest xmlns:android="h**p://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
package="com.example.lyold"
[Code]....
Any way to open local KML files with google maps in offline mode ? I want to open kml ONLY in google maps, i know there are several apps out there that support kml files....
I'm currently writing an app displaying a MapView showing a google map. I used the "hello map view" tutorial from http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/views/hello-mapview.html and this works so far: the map is displayed, centered and zoomed correctly, even the OverlayItems I added are displayed correctly. But when I click on one of those overlay items I added, the application crashes with a null pointer exception:
07-23 16:24:48.167: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(2530): java.lang.NullPointerException
07-23 16:24:48.167: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(2530): at com.android.internal.app.AlertController$AlertParams.<init>(AlertController.java:753)

Per the title, there are new versions of Maps and Street View in the market. The Maps update is just to add walking directions I think and the street view was a more polished update. Street view doesn't work after install, at least on my Epic. I open maps, pick a road and long-click on it. A balloon pops up saying "Loading address" for about 30 seconds then give me a pop-up error that says "Data Connection Lost, Retrying" But, data is working just fine on the phone everywhere else. Try rebooting the phone after install, it helped. Still some errors but much better than before. It is awesome when it works. Try compass mode.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm in the maps application, but I don't see how to access street view. Does anyone know what I need to do?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIt would seem that they've just rolled out their new Street View for practically the whole of the UK. So my question is: How long do you think it'll be until they release Google Navigation for the UK??
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running UD8.0 and chevys 1.0ulow kernel first of all...for some reason this will download but the install fails...anyone else having this trouble?
View 18 Replies View RelatedI don't know if this is because I'm running a custom ROM or that we are still on 1.5 but this is the latest app to go AWOL from the market. This is a real pain as it has some great new features and really tests my patience if this is only for 1.6 and above. Does anyone have a link to the .apk?
View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I try and use this the maps often don't appear even when outside, just get left with the grid. Should I do a reset ? (& bearing in mind I still can't get HTC Sync to install on my pc) or is it more likely to be related to the network ? I have both wireless and gps enabled and the latest version of google maps. Sky map seems to work fine (so uses the compass) but not google maps so can't get a map most of the time let alone streetview.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just recieved my HTC Hero today (second hand) and under build number it has MoDaCo Custom ROM 3.1 Core.
So i assume this means it is running a rooted ROM. Problem is there is no google maps on my phone and i cant seem to get it from the market, nor the google maps website. I did a factory reset before i used the phone.
When using google maps for directions is there a setting you can use so the map moves. At the moment I have to keep adjusting it with my finger to show me where I am as I have driven off the screen :-)
View 8 Replies View RelatedI used Google Maps as I had some running around to do. I was not using GPS, I have it turned off and have full HSPA (H) showing on phone. Anyways, I put in my first stop and GMaps gave me the directions right away... so no problem.After I was done at the first place, I put in my second stop. GMaps showed exactly the same directions . I've been home now for about 1/2 and still, the exact same directions no matter what I put in.I have not turned the phone off/on or anything like that, because quite frankly, I shouldn't have to!Anyone get this happening with GMaps?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI would like Google Maps to over-ride the sleep timer on my phone and always stay on. I downloaded the app "Trapster", which is a police notification overlay on top of Google Maps. It has the feature of over-riding the sleep timer and keeps the display always on. Disabling the sleep timer is not an option. I would like Google Maps to have the same functionality a 3rd party overlay app is giving me.
View 6 Replies View RelatedNot sure if this should be posted in the Apps thread but this is with regards to apps that came pre-installed on my HTC Hero. Is there any difference between the Google Maps that came pre-installed on my HTC Hero and the Maps that is available to download from Market?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI noticed an update for Google Maps to 3.2.1. Being on the Hero, GM is pre-loaded and I don't know how to update it to the new version (since it's not listed in my Market downloaded, being that it was pre-loaded on the phone).Does it automatically do it, or do I have to uninstall and grab the new version from the Market? I went into the settings, but there was nothing there to check for updates, just 'Latitude' and the other standard options.
View 18 Replies View RelatedI just installed VillainROM 10.3.0 Final and so far I noticed that Google Maps is not working.
View 6 Replies View Relatedwhen I try using directions in Google Maps, only some of my contacts come up in the address book. Which is strange, because I have a lot more people in my contacts that have their addresses entered in?Does anyone else have this problem?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI went to put in an address this morning in google navigation to use for the first time and it had several addresses cached that I had searched on my laptop when looking up stuff on google maps. How do I clear these cached addresses out of my phone?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI really like the new Google Navigation, and it would be really handy for when I go abroad cycling, apart from the roaming charges. Any apps that can cashe the maps and store them, or must I always be connected?
