HTC Hero :: Flickr Integration Loses Geocoding
Nov 26, 2009
I have been uploading my photos to Flickr using the built in Flickr integration. However, I notice that the geocoding does not get set in my Flickr account. When I browse the photos on my phone's card, the goecoding is in tact. Is this a limitation of Flickr or my Hero?

I have about 40 photos on my flickr account, many of which were uploaded from my Hero directly. That all works fine.
Unlike the viewing of the same photos through the Albums widget on the phone, which seems to fail to download them for viewing through the mobile data connection, even at H connection speed.....the download just seems to stall?

What's the deal with the Flickr integration?I thought I would transition over from Photobucket because it looked like it might make it easier to access and share photos. So I find out that I need a YahooID to sign up for Flickr. Why not something with Google (Picasa)?

Does anyone know of a SIP application that integrates with a VoIP phone system?
I downloaded SIPdroid, but you have to use VoIP service through PBXes.org.
I have a VoIP phone system (ShoreTel) in which I can set up SIP extensions. Assuming I have an app on my phone (iPhone has this app), I can walk into my office, have the local wireless network connect to my phone via Wi-Fi, and automatically assign my desk extension to my phone. Therefore whoever calls my DID or my desk extension, it will ring directly to my Hero.

I am trying to Reverse GeoCode current Lat/Long data to just Admin Area and Sub Admin Area using the Geocoder class.
I am using the NETWORK_PROVIDER as the Location provider. Here is the code that I use and it works. The problem is sometimes it does not give me any location sometimes it does.
Android Manifest permissions I am using.
CODE:.............
Here is the rest of the code that does give me correct location from time to time but nothing at other times.
CODE:..............
Are there restrictions with the network providers how frequently you can request location data?
How can I make sure that everytime its run this can give me valid location data.
Thanks in advance for any insight into this.
PS: I have run this code on my real device running Froyo 2.2 (Verizon Wireless). Target API Level 8.
This is what I got from my debugging.
Latitude Longitude is always fetched but the getFromLocation often returns null for the latitude longitude data passed to it. So what should be the workaround? May be pass the Lat/Long info to Google Maps API for reverse geocoding. Will be glad to receive any input.

I have been unable to get reverse geocoding wokring under either 2.1 or 2.2 on the emulators. Tested on both mac/eclipse & ubuntu/eclipse.
I am sending manual decimal coordinates via DDMS and have ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION & INTERNET permissions in my manifest file.
On an actual phone (HTC Desire) it functions properly.
CODE:............
The following code throws the exception below
CODE:..........
I have been looking for docs on this and can find very little information on the above to confirm whether it should or should not work.

I recently upgraded my SDK from 7 to 8. One of my applications uses Google GeoCoding, specifically the Geocoder object. After the upgrade, when I call the getFromLocation method, it doesn't return any addresses and I see a message in the logcat to the effect that GLS failed with status 20. My Google Maps API key is working fine because I'm seeing the map tiles, but GeoCoding is broken. It works fine if I run a previous (SDK 7) build of my app.

My app makes several calls to getFromLocationName from the android.location.Geocoder; class, this is currently handled in my activity which also displays some data depedant on the results of that call.
This can be quite slow, for example before the activity can load it first has to complete the various calls, and that is reliant on a network connection.
Once I have the results, I don't really need to refresh that (I mean how often do locations and geo coordinates change?)
My question : How can I best avoid having to query for this data each time my app runs. Should I do something with a service that loads them all on startup? (could be quite slow if it has to query 50+ times). OR should I make the call, store results in SQL, then only query next time if I don't currently hold the results?

My question in a nutshell is: Is there a correlation between the number of decimals used in GPS co-ordinates and the accuracy of the location?
Right now I happen to be working with the Android SDK but I'm sure this question can apply to many other geolocation SDKs. Basically, Android returns GPS coordinates with up to 14 digits. That seems like overkill in most situations. Lets say I needed accuracy down to about an area of 10 feet by 10 feet. How many decimals do I really need to worry about? The use-case that I'm looking for is I want to know if a person is north or south of a particular latitude - how many digits would I need to store in the database and how many digits would I need to compare?

I have an application that uses the Google Maps API to geocode distances between lat/long pairs as a way of displaying people near to you on your phone (currently Android, working on iPhone). The issue is that even with a test group of 40 users, we are taking upwards of 10 seconds to do our calculations and send the results back to the users. While 10 seconds sounds like a long time, it's not really an issue as far as the client app goes because it's not a real-time update of people's locations (the updates occur every few minutes). Obviously this is a problem though since we'd obviously love to ramp up to tens or even hundreds of thousands of users. I'm curious if anyone else has any experience in this arena in regards to using the Google Maps API for calculating distances between points for large volumes of data?
As an aside, we're using Rails on the server, which is where all of the location calculations are occurring. The phone(s) are merely displaying the maps and updating the server with lat/long coordinates.

After I upgraded to Android SDK 8 I started seeing geocoding failures in the emulator. However, everything was fine on a device. Now my app fails to gecode on 1.5 and 1.6 devices as well as in the emulator. I can't test on a 2.2 device. Perhaps it works OK there.

I bought my phone week ago and problems with GPS started immediately: I installed MOTONAV (iGO for Motorola) and tried to test it and it worked perfectly... for about 10 minutes and than message "GPS signal lost"... without come back. Reset of GPS or phone didn't solved the problem... I tried GPS signal later (after 15-30 minutes) with GPS Test app and there it was - working just like that: catches signal after 10 seconds!
After that I thought application was a problem: uninstalled it, downloaded Navigon - same thing: signal lost after 5-15 minutes of using navapp.
Hard reset of phone, navigon again - same issue.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had their email accounts disappear? This has happened 3 times now. The first time was a few weeks ago after having the same accounts for months. The next time was a couple of weeks ago and then it happened again today. I checked my emails when I got to work, and then while I was sitting in a meeting, I picked up my phone to peek at emails and all 3 accounts were gone along with my corporate calendar account. I re-entered the accounts and it loads everything, but this is kind of annoying.

I have a Timer which executes a TimerTask every 30 seconds. I only want the timer to launch a new TimerTask if the Activity is displayed i.e. if the user receives a phone call or launches a new activity the Timer will stop. I then need the Timer to restart when the Activity is re-launched and comes into focus.
Now this should be easy, I override the "onWindowFocusChanged(boolean hasFocus)" method and either start or stop the timer depending on the value of has Focus. The way I start the timer is to create a new Timer object and TimerTask each time and the way I stop the Timer is to call the cancel() method on the Timer object and set timer to null.
My problem is this doesn't always work, if I launch the activity which has the Timer and switch orientations quickly (to start/stop the Activity) I find the Timer is not always canceled and I end up with multiple Timers launching TimerTasks at an ever increasing rate.

Like the title says, I need to detect when my app loses focus because another app is launched (Phone call comes in, or user hits Home etc.).
Overriding Activity.OnStop does not work because that is called even when switching activities within my app.

I wonder if anybody has ran into the issue where a running emulator would lose network connection all at a sudden for no obvious reason. And I am sure the computer running the JVM is still online.Restarting the emulator seems to fix the issue but it's been a major PITA for me as it interrupts the work flow.I am using 2.1 SDK 7.

I have configured this to push and its working fine in terms of sending and receiving emails. The main problem I have is that it loses sync with the exchange account. If I delete from the device it sometimes does not remove them from my outlook and viceversa. Has anyone else got this phone connected to an exchange 2003 server SP2 ? Also has anyone managed to get any other folders to sync other than the inbox ?

With a few thousand customers, only 2 have complained of this problem. They install the app, then put the phone in standby/sleep mode (i.e. turning it off, but not shutting it down). When they turn it back on, my app's icon is reverted to the generic green and white android icon and the title shows as the class name of the app instead of the title. And, of course, the app no longer works. I am at a loss as to what to do. It seems like an android bug to me. And I think both customers are using a Motorola Droid. Anybody else heard of this? I am not sure what to search for on Google.

I have a problem handling messages in a Thread. My run-method looks like this The problem is that the run-method logs "id from message: null" though "message ID" has a value in the Log-statement. Why does the message "lose" it's data when being send to the thread? Has it something to do with the notify?

When changing screen orientation while running an Activity that has both a normal layout and a layout-land file defined (both of which contain a TextView), then that view loses its focus after being restored and a warning is issued on the log:
"Previously focused view reported id X during save, but can't be found during restore."
Is this a bug? I looked at the mID field of that view, and it's identical for both the portrait and the landscape layout.

I got my desire last week. When I did the initial wizard setup, I put in my Facebook id and my Flickr one as well. I remember on that first day, I was quite pleased with the Flickr app and my photos. Now, it seems to be completely gone. If I look in All Programs, it's not there. If I go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications, I can see Flickr (HTC Corporation) there in the list. If I choose it, I get the usual screen with the Clear Cache and About buttons.
